Join me on a tour of Dundonian delights as I explore the attractions both well and not so well-known! We'll visit ships, museums, statues, football stadiums and a whole lot more. Why not come along and see what Scotland's 4th largest city has to offer.
Local legend Eric Gudmunsen has generously allowed me to use his music for this video - check out his music at ericgudmunsen.com - he has a new album releasing soon too and I'll be buying it for sure!
End Credits song: 'The Dundee Fowk Sang'.
Other music courtesy of epidemicsound.com

I've never been to Dundee, and now I must go. When I was a boy growing up in London I used to love going to look at 'Discovery' when she was moored on the Embankment by Waterloo Bridge. It's good to see her so well looked after.

The dragon statue is about the legend of the 9 maidens.. A farmer sent his daughter to get water from the well and she never returned so he sent his next daughter and she also never returned after they had all been sent and never came back he went to the well to look for them. He found them all dead with a dragon next to the well. He ran for help and the town people chased the dragon. A guy called Martin caught up and killed the dragon. There is a stone outside Dundee in a field that is said is where the dragon fell..

ALSO, the dragon became the symbol for the Dundee Corporation when the town had the old green buses. I grew up in Dundee in the 1960s and the dragon was on the side of all the buses before they changed to the modern blue city branding.

I've been to Dundee a few times, but never actually discovered the Discovery. I've been missing out on something, so thanks for the fine video. I agree with your comments about the V&A. I visited the V&A last year when they hosted a dance club special exhibition, and although interesting enough, I felt they could have gone one step further. I felt the open spaces in the exhibition areas were used to 'pad-out' the displays, when in actual fact much more could have been included.
@steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve enjoyed your Dundee videos, including the one when you had the bad luck of the fire alarm! On my visit there wasn’t even an extra exhibition on like in your one, so it was even MORE empty!

Oh this was marvelous Steve thank you! I've only ever driven through Dundee about 15 year ago, so to see your video now in February 2024 will encourage me to go back. And get a proper Dundee cake! That charity shop was a Wow! As for the donuts? If there is one smell that reminds me of the seaside it's freshly made donuts! Walton on the Naze comes to mind. 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪🙋

Dundee - home of flax, Beano, William McGonagall's dreadful poetry and Marmalade. Thanks for a really interesting look around, Steve; it's a "must visit" city. And I agree with your comment on the V&A, so many museums & galleries around the world devote far too much to restaurants and cafe's than to their core business; exhibits.

Yes, the first time I went was for the V&A, yes I did leave disappointed... Days out is a good tip. Thanks 👍 The Apex is good, the Malmaison not so much... Hi Steve. Thanks for the brilliant video giving an insight into Dundee. You mentioned Inverness, me and my wife like that place and I have always wanted to visit Stirling and Perth. I'll add Dundee to it as well. Take care.

I’m glad to see that you have been to the Faroe Islands. My knowledge of these islands is from you tube and they look spectacular. So remote yet accessible by air or ferry. Another place I did visit in England when I lived outside of harrogate in the early 60’ s was different sections of the hadrians wall. Have you ever hiked it? On good weather days which weren’t that often, we would hike a few miles, have a picnic, hike some more then get picked up and go home. It was great. I re-live these times from your great videos and truly appreciate your efforts. Can’t wait for your next surprise! Be safe.

Just home from a week in Scotland. Decided to spend 2 days in Dundee after watching your video as had never been before and never even thought about visiting. Had a great time. Discovery, Unicorn , walked to Dundee Law , McManus, V&A. And perfect weather. Thanks for the info!

Well, I guess that's another lovely Scottish city I need to come & visit - I've been through & back on a train (and enjoyed the view from the bridge over the Tay), and once went to a sports hall - but I've never stopped to see the sights. Discovery looks amazing, Unicorn might be one for a flexible spine day, and the V&A looks like it's worth seeing if I'm coming up anyway!

Aye, at least the V&A is free for a wee peek, but the ships are truly wonderful!

Thanks for showing Dundee as great place to visit, I worked on Discovery for 15 years, mostly working on the rigging so I've been up those masts many times, good to see she's looking so well mentained. I lived in Newport across the Tay then, I cycled to work across the road bridge, I thought it the best commute going, the sunrise and sunsets from the bridge can be amazing. I live abroad now since I retired 15 years ago, so thanks for the memories.

Steve, you have done it again! Dundee, a fabulous destination. Truly a 5 star city. The trouble is, now I'll have to plan yet another week in the case my travels take me to wonderful Scotland. So many interesting and clean destinations. Enjoyed the Unicorn ship (viewable from google maps) and the Discovery. What a part of history. Pretty decent ship in terms of length and size. How it was presented nearly put me right there on board. Glad there is support that keeps those ships alive. I'd visit the V and A, just to chill out, get out of the hustle and bustle. Always impressed with your video's and I learned something. Don't get in Steve's way when he is putting down a Dundee Cake!
@steve-marsh
@steve-marsh 2 жыл бұрын
Haha that Dundee cake would make a great door stop :) I think if I had more time I'd happily use the V&A for a lunch with a view, but as a gallery/museum, it was lacking in my eyes. Totally agree it's a 5 star city, especially on a wonderful day like day 1!

Another interesting video Steve. I fully agree with you about the V&A museum, very impressive outside and a real disappointment inside. I did spot one thing inside though that gave me a possible topic for a future video from you, The Falkirk Wheel and a wee wander along the canal to the Kelpie's maybe.Two incredible structures that are pretty close together and are incredible structures. Stay safe mate.

So glad you went back to Dundee, it was definitely worth anther visit.i 100% agree with you about the McManus, an excellent museum, beautifully refurbished with some of the best taxidermy I have ever seen. I must say my heart always sinks when I find put people have been to Dundee and not gone to the McManus, a real treat missed. I will definitely go to the Unicorn next time I'm there, I've only seen it from the outside but the inside deserves a look. Thanks again for showcasing Dundee. I'm off to Perth next month, another lovely and underrated Scottish city in my opinion, I'll pop in to Tim Hortons and get a few timbits while I'm there.

Glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm glad to say there are plans to redevelop and especially preserve the Unicorn and North Carr lightships (red lottery labelled one) Plans are apparently to build a visitor exhibition space for the Unicorn, similar slightly to the Discovery. I used to be a volunteer at that charity shop and at different points it was a bank, a sweet shop and a couple of different things before the charity took it over.

Smashing that Steve. My wife and I stayed in Dundee about 15-16 years ago and there wasn't much to see then to be honest, although it was fab to use as a base to tour Angus and Tayside. The city looks transformed now though. It's amazing how a bit of art and culture can lift a place. It is almost unrecognisable now and we'll have to have an overnighter there again someday. Thanks for the vid 👍
