"All those secrets you've been concealing, Say you're happy now Once More with Feeling" When he sung his goodbye song the demon told them to sing one more song which is why we get the closing song. Also, just as Spike leaves you hear everyone sing "The curtains close on a kiss, God knows we can tell the end is near." Foreshadowing the end of the episode ending with a kiss and then curtains closing across the screen.

Best episode of the entire series, imo. Unlike most musical episodes, it isn’t a standalone; it moves the plot forward on every storyline front. And it features a completely original score, not pop song adaptations or parodies. Incredible achievement. Your reaction to the reveal of the minions was hilarious! Thanks for a super fun one!

@@Christian_Ada1 This is way better than Hush, though Hush is in top 5 Buffy episodes. This is the best episode of TV I have ever seen on a show that has 20ish episodes per season. And I cannot raise any episode of any show higher than this, though there are couple episodes which I think are as perfect as this on 10 episode per season shows. The story is perfect here, amazing songs, direction is superb. I hate musicals for the most part, and when I saw this episode I almost stopped watching it, but then it won me over pretty quickly and in the end I cried like a baby. The second best episode is The Body. Not that I would like to watch it as it's too painful, but holy hell that episode is perfect on what it wants to accomplish. But Once More With Feeling is like Lord of the Rings trilogy in that it seems to just get better and better with time, and it's always fresh.

This was one of the first musical episodes, and it's still by far the best! -The songs are all original, written specifically for the characters and the actors' voices. -The songs have a real reason to be sung, as well as a purpose in the story. So creative to use music rather than just a demon who forces people to reveal their secrets. -It's not a standalone. It fits perfectly with the previous and following episodes, and the flow of the season as a whole.

The fact that you got to this point without being spoiled for this episode is amazing. A lot of shows that do musical episodes never get it right, and it offers very little to the plot. This however is the exception. Not only is this an innovative episode in term of plot and foreshadowing, it's a damn good 'musical'. The songs are really good and well structured, and just work so well in the episode. There is also great comedy in the episode with the lyrics. Of course the massive reveal for the group is Buffy telling them she was dragged out of Heaven, Spike already knew this of course, and then Dawn repeats to Buffy 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' the exact words Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift S5 Finale. Spike getting fed up with singing is very funny towards the end, but what an ending when Buffy follows him. It was brilliantly done, and now with Buffy and Spike kissing, the whole direction of the show takes a strange turn with some brilliant, but disturbing episodes to follow. Love the reaction again man. This really was a brilliant episode of the show, as you say Elie, Lorne from Angel would have loved this.
@RLucas3000

I have to disagree with one thing, I don’t think Lorne would like this at all. I see him as feeling song has to come from inside, given like a gift, not forced out of you, or taken from you. I think he would look at this week’s demon as evil (which he is). I also think Lorne would be immune to his power. I wonder if Adam or Glory would be?

Interesting that when Buffy was dancing and started to catch fire that Spike saved her. The one guy that wanted to kill her for years, saved her. It seemed like Buffy didn't care if she burned, or maybe the demon had control of her, not sure. But Dawn's line to Buffy: "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." Xena did the first musical episode on a mainstream series, predating OMWF by several years and did it quite well. Xena set the standard. Buffy IMHO _EXCEEDED_ the standard and prefected the concept. Almost all musical episodes that have followed are pale imitations of these.

@@juzujuzu4555 And so does Xena actually - The Bitter Suite episode is a culmination of an arc that really drives the two main characters over the edge in an even more dramatic sense than the Buffy episode in my opinion. Xena definitely deserves the same amount of praise and kudos that Buffy seems to get online and needs to be re-discovered a lot more by modern audiences. It did actually create many tropes that Buffy often seems to get sole credit for and I wish it would get more acknowledgement than it does.

@@tjtenser7828 I don't remember much about Xena even though I watched almost every episode of it. I do remember it being pretty good. Perhaps would appreciate it much more now. Xena might be great, though OMWF certainly deserves it's praise. I do agree that Buffy gets a lot of credit that belongs to elsewhere, and while I do like Buffy as strong female character I dislike feminism and especially men who claim to be behind that, as that is inherently toxic ideology. It is ultimately poisonous to true feminine and true masculine. I think Buffy and Angel are perfect characters in a sense that Buffy constains the sacred feminine and Angel the sacred masculine, with tiny part of the opposite force in them like yin and yang.

For those of you keeping score at home, this was Buffy's second suicide attempt of the season with Buffy dancing her way on fire and Spike stopping her . You could also count her death in The Gift as a suicide. Sure it was necessary, but she didn't seem too unhappy about it.

Funny when you think about the episode where spike told her that every slayer has a death wish. At that point it didn't fit her. But her you can see how foreshadowing that sentence was. I believe only Anthony and James were the only ones with music background; Michelle was afraid to sing but did ballet, so they wrote in her dance with the dummies and the demon--the amazing Hinton Battle! Joss wrote all the music and lyrics. It's impressive all the nods to so many different genres and musicals. Interestingly, Willow doesn't sing a whole lot throughout this episode. She sings a little bit in the 'why is everyone singing' song (I've got a theory) and a little bit in the 'lets help buffy' song (Walk through the fire) and after the initial shock, a bit in the ending song (Where do we go from here). With all these secrets being revealed and people singing their feelings and things that have been weighing on them, it's clear she doesn't feel guilty at all about her manipulation of Tara and overuse of magic. She 100% feels she has done nothing wrong. (At least until Buffy's heaven reveal)

Some thoughts on the complexity of Once More With Feeling. Nearly every character has a secret at this point in the series and every secret is either revealed or addressed in this episode. Joss Whedon had to write the music for this episode months in advance and have it integrated into a story that had not been completely written yet. This episode was a truly insane amount of work. Who writes something that complicated? Nearly every character is carrying a secret. Every secret is addressed in the middle of a musical episode. The Buffyverse is one of the strangest, most ambitious pieces of television. I doubt we'll ever see anything like this again: a fantasy series where every season is completely different and nearly every character and every relationship changes every season. Just look at the transformations in the relationship between Buffy and Spike. Their relationship is completely different every single season.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Жыл бұрын
Buffy’s secret: She was in Heaven. Her friends pulled her out. The audience know it, all other characters apart from Spike don’t. Willow’s secret: She put a spell on Tara. No one knows about it except the audience and her. She’s the only character who never confesses her secret but it is exposed. Tara‘s secret: She’s a victim of mental and physical abuse. Only Willow knows as she’s the instigator of it but doesn’t see it that way. Not even Tara knows this until Dawn unintentionally and unconsciously exposes it… thus what Tara confesses while being “under her spell” isn’t so much a secret but a declaration which addresses the secret. Xander’s secret: He is afraid of marrying and settling down with Anya. And the reason as to why isn’t explained yet so I can’t go any further than writing this. No one knows, including himself… he is unconscious of his own fears and that’s why he “never tells”. Anya’s secret: She’s afraid of growing old and not being appealing anymore to Xander. She knows. Xander also knows but doesn’t really sit with Anya to talk about it with her because “they never tell”. Giles’ secret: He is planning to fly the coop. He has to leave so that Buffy can learn to live all on her own and develop independence in making difficult choices. Only he knows he is going to do this. Dawn’s secret: She’s a kleptomaniac. She steals because she can’t stand being unnoticed. No one knows this and even she doesn’t truly understand her own problem with this… thus when she begins to involuntarily confess, she is abruptly stopped by demons. A metaphor for being oblivious to your own behaviour even though you feel something is off. Spike’s secret: He doesn’t actually have one except the one he himself is always avoiding acknowledging in getting Buffy to love him back. Everybody but him knows it. He is soulless. It’s a self-secret that can’t be revealed so much as it is reasoned. That’s everyone. While not every secret is a secret persay - it is still information hidden or repressed in some capacity and thus is involuntarily confessed or unintentionally exposed because of Sweet’s magic. This may just be me and the way my mind works but I would say what’s confessed or exposed is more so for self-awareness than any other kind of awareness. Self-growth is the point.

I've seen a number of song reactors react to this episode out of context with the show and not really like it. It's so crazy how good it is when you get what's going on. A musical is usually light and happy, yet here Buffy basically is suicidal and if you listen closely to the lyrics she sang while going to the Bronze, was going there to die and just be rid of the life she has. Pretty dark for a simple musical. I just hate to see people ruin it for themselves as it's just so damn good to stumble across it unspoiled in the course of the show.

@@dongilleo9743 true, although it can be especially tough for reactors. Very few have time in their schedule to watch episodes more than once, which hinders their ability to see some of the depths the show has to offer. Add to that the fact that the reaction we see is their first viewing. I will freely admit I wasn't able to seriously view the context of the episode my first time through. I probably rewatched it several times in a row and started to catch on really to just how bad things were by the third viewing. The episode is just such a Pleasant surprise, it's hard to stay grounded the first time through. At least regular Buffy reactors understand a lot of the unsaid things in the episode. Those wing nut ones that just watch it without the context of what came before would just be so lost at sea. I mean, how many shows not only kill their main character, but actually kill them twice? That would just be one minute detail they would be confused over.

I am not a musical person but I do like this episode quite a bit because of all the character/plot insights the songs have. And really appreciate it creatively too. As Joss Whedon said, Buffy was his film school and he tried all sorts of things with it. (this episode is usually Buffy fans' number 1 or in their top 3 - even if it isn't for me)

4:31 Speaking of Diseny, Buffy’s song here melody wise is VERY reminiscent of “can you feel the love tonight” from Lion King. Probably only the part where she sings “I just wanna be”.. But apparently the song was inspired by “Part of Your World”

Great reaction to a great episode. Joss spent 6 months writing the music and lyrics to each song. The opening scene, just like in The Body, was added to get rid of the credits so that when Buffy bursts into song it is just her on screen. Also, if you look closely at the Life's a Show number you can see Amber bump into a post whilst dancing and then continue as if nothing happened. ps, I think this line's mostly filler.

The background for this episode as the story goes, Joss had invited some of the actors over to his, they played music and sang, which made Joss realize that he had some really talented cast members. Alyson Hannigan did not want to sing and Michelle Trachtenberg really wanted to dance and but sing...so she got that dance number instead. This episode inspired all following musical shows as it wasnt a thing before this episode. This was 2002. High school musical was in 2006. 7:46 The mustard man is David Fury, BTVS director/producer 15:04 Marti Noxon, BTVS write /producer 15:32 the painters in the background are the same dancers that play the puppets later 23:18 Holy sh**! I never thought of that! Lorne and Sweet could definitly come from the same demon race...Singing and all, just different colours but heySame dimension atleast..wow..thanks Elie! That one was new. 29:02 "I touch the fire" actually charted on some music charts during this time. I remember watching the video before the episode had even come out in sweden, on a german music channel called Viva at the time. 34:21 "the hardest thing in this world, is to life in it". What Buffy said to Dawn in the Gift. Thank you for the reaction!

I think those dancing painters are inspired by a scene from Roger Rabbit, which was probably inspired by an even older scene from the golden age of Hollywood, but I’m not sure of that. Also, I think Lorne would hate this demon, as he forces out or takes what should be given as a gift, through love. Also, there were musical episodes of shows before Buffy. Xena did two. I Love Lucy also did two, way back in the early 50s. (One is an operetta, my favorite episode, and the other is a spoof of the then popular musical, Brigadoon, when the characters visit Scotland. Two of the characters even play a two-headed dragon!)

@@RLucas3000 The dancing painters - ok cool. About Lorne - well perhaps they could be from the same dimension as waring clans, on the opposing side. About Xena - yes i know that. But it was not a thing and was more seen as cheesy before Buffy. Buffy inspired alot of shows even Glee. Xena also references Buffy in one episode, "I hear Buffus the Bacchae Slayer is playing next door," something, cant remember it right. So what i am saying is that whilst you are right Xena did indeed have musical episodes but for all the people who has reviewed, taken uni courses ect on Buffy will tell you that Buffy inspired the musical genre in television. Unfortunatly, Xena, however cool it was of its time ( i loved it too!), did not do that.

Something I think a lot of people miss when they've only ever listened to the songs in the show, that is clear as day on the OST, is at the end of the ticket song she ends it with, "I'm not wearing underwear". The dialog is already resuming and she's off screen, but they had the little throw away joke in the background much like Whedon's work on Serenity. It's the little touches that were both his brilliance, and what probably drove him to be such a taskmaster. Tara and Giles' duet has to be my favorite song from the episode, but honestly with the exception of some of the background songs that really lose their charm on repeat listens, the OST overall was great.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for 'Once More, With Feeling'. SPOILERS AHEAD:.... SWEET: “Big smiles everyone. You beat the bad guy.” I have been so excited to post my recap for the beloved Buffy musical episode for the longest time. Some may say that ‘Once More, With Feeling’ is the only reason why Season 6 is successful given the show was done and dusted when The WB ended it with Season 5 and it was picked up again by UPN not 5 months later. But what is it about this one-off musical episode that captures people so much? Well, in my personal opinion, it’s the exact same reason why ‘Restless’, ‘Hush’ and ‘The Body’ capture me so much. I mean what do all of these Buffy episodes have in common besides the fact they’re all Joss Whedon directed and written? They’re CHARACTER STUDIES. What do I mean by that? Well, a character study is a piece of written art/entertainment that focuses on the characterization, representation and development of the characters. The main characters in particular. A character study addresses narratives and arcs that the main characters are going through within the season, or sometimes even throughout the whole show. The intention with a character study is to look into who these characters are, what they care about, who they love, why they behave the way they do etc… Sometimes going deeply internal and analyzing their characteristics and personality traits such as what they fear or what they’re insecure about like ‘Restless’. With ‘Once More, With Feeling’ there is an external plot going on that’s made obvious to us as we watch it. A dancing demon named Sweet has been summoned by a magical talisman and all of Sunnydale is effected by way of being forced to spontaneously and randomly burst into song and dance to express their repressed thoughts and feelings. However, what makes it a character study is essentially that the “bad” in this episode isn’t the dancing demon at all. It’s all the secrets that the main characters have been hiding from one another that have finally been involuntarily confessed or unintentionally exposed. So when they defeat Sweet, it doesn’t feel like a ‘win’ because so much damage has been done that cannot be taken back. Most notably the information Buffy has kept from everyone except Spike that she was in Heaven and not in any kind of Hell dimension like the rest of the Scoobies assumed. That was a big reveal which creates devastating implications for everyone going forward in the season. Especially for Buffy. ‘Once More, With Feeling’ is a one-of-a-kind piece of written art/entertainment because it doesn’t just merely acknowledge the seasonal arc but actually drives it along dramatically and meaningfully through internal character struggles. And that’s something you would not expect a one-off musical in a TV show to do as it takes a remarkable amount of artistic skill and talent to pull off and to translate to the audience through the screen so that it feels as serious as it is and not just a cliché with cringey show-tunes. I mean, yeah, the songs are still somewhat cringey but they’re extremely clever at the same time. They work because the writing and acting makes them work and the external plot is delivered in such a way that you’re just like “Okay, yeah. It makes sense”. It could have just been done for laughs, for the fun of it, to show off the main cast’s talent… it could have just been there to be there. It’s not. And I really really fucking appreciate it. As I’ve mentioned before… there’s only one other musical episode in a TV show I can compare it to for its artistic cleverness. That is ‘The Bitter Suite’ in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. Which not coincidentally is my most favourite episode of Xena and the very first episode of the show I ever watched from way back when I was 5 years old. I haven’t been with Buffy anywhere near as long but I can still say that ‘Once More, With Feeling’ matches up to the majesty of ‘The Bitter Suite’. Coming from me, that’s saying a hell of a lot of my love for it. I think it’s absolute genius.

Both ‘The Bitter Suite’ and ‘Once More, With Feeling’ are really unprecedented for their time in TV. Even though Xena’s musical episode came first in 1998, both Buffy and Xena take the credit for musical episodes becoming pop culture in TV. But they also did the unthinkable by cleverly, not only coincide with the plot, but further it along in that they both have the characters spill secrets and make confessions which aid to evolve respective character arcs and tell a story that has them begin again in new and interesting ways. In ‘Once More, With Feeling’ Buffy confesses she was pulled out of heaven by her friends. Forcing the Scooby Gang, Willow in particular, to process this information and grapple with the seriousness of it. In ‘The Bitter Suite’ Xena confesses that she killed Ming Tien. Forcing Xena to beg for forgiveness from Gabrielle so she can pass through the waterfall. Thereby reconciling and reuniting them, making their relationship stronger so they can battle the real enemy. All of this is done in song. Cheesy? Sure. But clever at the same time. The creators knew that talking about these subjects and themes would be heavy on the audience watching and listening, so addressing them in music was a way of making what was heavy subject material much lighter. And at the same time, they also knew that music is meant for honest expression. So really, how else would or could it work? They ultimately made the right decision. As cheesy or silly as it may look on the surface, they achieved what few have… Going deeper without drowning. This is why these two musical episodes remain staples in TV history. It is not just because they’re musicals. It’s because they’re musicals with depth. They could have just been some silly entertainment for the cast to have fun with and show off their talent and nothing more. Instead they were much, much, much more than that. They were artistic genius. They were performance art. And you will find it difficult to truly understand either of these shows without them. As my soul brother Sweet put it: “Now, we’re partying. That’s what it’s all about.”

Love, love your reaction to this episode! I read in different articles some fun details about the making of this episode. How the cast spent weeks doing dance and vocal training on top of their regular shooting schedule. Michelle T (Dawn) had a background in dance, which was why she asked for the ballet number. They, including SMG, considered if they should use a voice double for Buffy. Until SMG read the lyrics and realized what a critical moment it was in Buffy's arc. (I think she did a fabulous job!) Anya (Emma C) was apparently known for breaking out into spontaneous rock songs, which was why Joss included that part. The timing of the fire truck passing by, I think was coincidental. So many interesting facts. But heads up, I would avoid reading any articles yourself right now. Some could contain Season 6 spoilers.

This commentary may contain spoilers. Adding the disclaimer just in case.... Once More, With Feeling’ allows all the characters to confess truthfully with the exception of Willow because Willow doesn’t believe she needs to confess anything. She doesn’t think she is in the wrong for what she does to both Buffy and Tara until Buffy and Tara straight up tell her that she is. Willow is completely oblivious to her own abusive and manipulative behaviour towards her loved ones. To her, the intention is to help them, to make things better between them… So Willow doesn’t get a song of confession or honesty not just because Alyson Hannigan can’t sing and they didn’t wanna dub her, but because she doesn’t think she needs to confess anything. It’s not wrong to her until she’s told that it is. And even then, she still doesn’t really understand why it is. Willow is self-entitled. So it’s hard for her to grasp why her willow-ing situations is a selfish or wrongful act. She also doesn’t get to duet with Tara because Tara’s love song is about how Willow has affected her character. It’s not meant to be a love song between the both of them. Just Tara’s love song. Kinda ironic that this character is called Willow and almost her entire arc is about her “willing” things her way. Or clever. It’s an appropriate name. And her nickname is shortened to 'Will’. Even better. This character’s arc is all about having her “Will” be done. Similiar to Warren or Glory or even Spike to some degree, although he is well aware that he is being selfish and wrong and evil. Willow doesn’t get it. She gets it with other characters but not herself. It’s not the same to her. GILES: “Oh, there are others in this world who can do what you did. You just don’t want to meet them.” WILLOW: “No, probably not, but… well, they’re the bad guys. I’m not a bad guy.” They say there is no BIG BAD of Season 6... but to me... Willow is absolutely the BIG BAD of Season 6. I refuse to believe otherwise. Yes, I love the character. I also love my mother. I’m still not going to excuse her mistreatment of me because I love her. It doesn’t work that way. People have to be called out for what they are and what they do regardless of the relation. People that have no handbrakes on their behaviour are the hardest to convince of being in the wrong for it because to them it’s not wrong to behave that way. And when they’re called out - they immediately go on the defensive and they turn it around to them being the ones violated or victimized. Gaslighters, manipulators, abusers are all like this. All act like this. And in Season 6, Willow is so powerful and so self-entitled that she believes that every time she is attacked by her loved ones for her behaviour it’s either because they’re jealous of her or they don’t understand her. That they’re making her the villain. But the truth is that she is the villain! And she doesn’t recognize that. Of course she doesn’t. Her egomania won’t allow her to recognize it. Only in others. And of course - she doesn’t start out that way. She’s a very good and gentle-natured person. But the seeds are there - and all it takes is one bad day for them to grow into full embodiments of violence and destruction. That is Willow’s arc. That’s why she’s such a profound character in the Buffyverse - or, in my opinion, all of TV history. She’s a flawed character that is allowed to be a flawed character. She's very quietly morally grey and I absolutely love her for that.

The musical part of this episode is epic. Still, this is what I like to call an earthquake episode, very much in line with s3e08 - Lovers Walk. In both episodes, pressure has built up around secrets each of the characters have been holding onto. All that pressure breaks out violently as their secrets get exposed, destroying the status quo and many of the relationships along the way. Also, in both, Spike goes for the girl. Kind of love the parallels.

If that heavy-lidded looking down lustful expression Tara gives Willow is not a request for Willow to go down on her, I don’t know what is. I just wish Willow said no. At least until Tara could remember that she was still angry with Willow because it's not an informed decision if Tara doesn't have full information even if she is the one that asks to be made love to. Here's how I think of it: They had sex while Tara was under Willow's spell. The spell Tara is under extricates information via forgetting it which most definitely would affect her willingness to receive and Willow's right to perform... and thus that forgotten information negates her consent because her autonomy is partially erased through loss of memory. So because she's under the influence of the affects of the Lethe's Bramble,... it's essentially date-rape/sexual assault that Willow is physical with her while those flower effects are fully functioning in her mind or anatomy. I can't get over this to the point that I have to express this every time a reactor reacts to this specific scene/musical number. The great irony of ‘Under Your Spell' is that the song is all about how love has made you free to be yourself when you singing the song is something you wouldn’t do if you were actually being yourself.

I always feel torn between being upset and laughing at the dance where Buffy almost kills herself. It's one of the saddest things she has done, but the dummy lying on the floor keeps moving. Based on their editing she filmed that at least 3 times. He was at one side towards Dawn at first, then when she needed to stand there he moved all the way to the other side and much further back. When she came forward he ended up being right in the middle and still further back. That whole scene has another funny thing that should have been edited out where when Tara is dancing back up she walks into the pole and laughs, and is still visibly laughing when she steps out from behind it later.
