I disagree. I'm fed up of seeing shows go on and on only to eventually become an embarrassment. I'm glad Recess stopped when it did. Sure, it was rather short lived however, the episodes are pure gold.

@@eve9587 Well as you can see, Spinelli harboured some resentment towards Gretchen and took it out on her, not wanting to be friends with her and everything. It never feels good to get compared to someone else especially if it's your parents that are doing it. I know I hated it when my mom would bring up other kids and why I wasn't like them. Being compared to someone could create jealousy which turns into resentment and eventually a blow up especially to ill tempered people like Spinelli.

Yeah, the parents did go a bit far as comparing your kids to someone else's kids. It can really destroy relationships in a matter of seconds, if you don't explain it to them soon. It is like a slap in the face and puts you down. My friends parents would always say in front of my ex-friend "you should be more like him" and "you are the son I never had", even his sister crushed on me which really pissed him off and well...it ended badly.

That's the point of the episode: If there is something bothering you, don't bottle it up, communicate! Children see their parents as authority figures first and foremost, so it's easy for them to forget that parents are humans, too, infallible like anybody else. Wise parents listen to their kids, and learn and grow together as a family. Much better than how parents are depicted these days on TV -- as buffoons with diminished roles in their children's lives and treated with hostility.

Incidentally Recess alludes to it's popularity with Monstickers in that "Economics of Recess" episode. It's a shame we don't get cartoons like Recess these days.

It's actually funny, because Helga Pataki from Hey Arnold loves wrestling too. She and Spinelli get compared a lot because they're short-tempered tough tomboys, but the difference between the tones of the show meant the two girls were taken in very different directions via development. But their interests definitely align. Also, both of them don't try to look good, but when they make the most of their looks, they're the prettiest girl in their shows. Also, irony, as Francesca Marie Smith was in both shows, but I think her Recess characters were actually Swinger Girl and Upside-Down Girl (who actually resembles Helga as they both have blonde pigtails and wear a similar outfit).

This episode wouldn't have been so bad if only it wasn't as blatant as Spinelli's parents going as far as to say: "You should be more like Gretchen." It would have worked much better if only Spinelli assumed and imagined that was what her parents thought.

But it would have changed the episode entirely. Because then it wouldn't have been her parents "in the wrong" it would have been Spanelli herself. By the episode going the way it did, Spanelli's spat with Gretchen is sort of justified rather than just being an unnecessary, cliche overreaction. On your end, it would make the episode's moral about not jumping to conclusions, jealousy and trusting in the fact that your parents love you. Which is perfectly fine and is pretty standard and no one would have had an issue if that were the case. But instead the episode seems to target the parents more than kids with its message and that is to show your children that you love and value them and the effect that words have on a childs psyche (especially whe coming from the likes of parents). Sure it was delivered with a bit of a heavy hand but it works and (I think) it works well.

At 1:03, the girl holding a blue magazine is Claire Maddon. She's a sixth grade student at Third Street Street, who works for King Bob as an enforcer. She is tall, has brown hair and wears pink diamond stud earrings. She also wears a pink sweater, purple skirt, light grey socks and brown sandals. She's my favorite character in Recess. She's so super cute. They never did an episode that focused on her though. 💗

I watch this now, right around the time I start season 4 of Sons Of Anarchy, and I hear Katey Sagal being all cheerful. It just sounds like Gemma Teller being sarcastic.
