There's something that's been bothering me about children's books based on Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. And that something is Clopin. Not the character himself, but the fact that nearly every single HOND book calls him out by name with absolutely no footnote saying "This name is not pronounced phonetically." Seriously, it's really got me. These are AMERICAN KIDS. AMERICAN. They're about five years old at most, and are probably learning or have learned the alphabet. A name like Quasimodo or Frollo? No problem. Write down the name C-L-O-P-I-N, however, and those kids will be utterly confused. Especially if you add his last name, Trouillefou, into that equation. Unless they saw Ratatouille at the age of 5 (and at least THAT movie was smart enough to address and correct the mispronunciation), they will be even more confused. They are not going to know that Clopin is supposed to be pronounced "kloh-PAH~n." They will certainly do what I did for two months and call him "klop-pin"- which, as we all know, is NOT the pronunciation of his name! Long story short, Disney- if you're thinking about including a crazy French name in a story based on one of your works, ESPECIALLY if that name contains a FRENCH NASAL VOWEL, which pretty much no 5-year-old American kid can pronounce, do what you did in Ratatouille and put in a pronunciation guide. It will make everything so much easier.
