To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, they turned their animated feature, Wish, into a centennial celebration. In this movie review, I’ll be looking closely into this movie and see if this Wish is the film that honors Disney’s legacy or marked its 100 years with a miss.

I expect Once Upon a Studio to win best animated short film. It truly is a wonderful tribute to 100 years of the Disney company. Edit: It wasn’t nominated, which is a crime.

I’m stoked that I’m not the only one who appreciates this film for what it is. I watched this movie with my sisters on thanksgiving and I absolutely loved it for many reasons. Firstly, the animation is unlike anything I’ve seen from this studio. All I’ve been seeing is crap for the animation: “it looks like a kids tv show”, “it looks weird”, etc. The animation serves two purposes: to look like a storybook come alive and to celebrate the roots and progress Disney has made. The character’s expressions are a treat to see and compliment the incredible voice acting. The backgrounds are all beautifully painted watercolor, which I hardly ever see in a mainstream animation studio anymore. Each movement is as smooth as silk; the artists took careful consideration with each action, and it shows. Now, the songs are no “Be Prepared” or “Out There”, but each lyric of every song is carefully thought out and cleverly works for each of their featured scenes. I especially want to harp on this point for “this is the thanks I get”, widely regarded as the worst villain song ever made (or at least that’s what it made out to be). I’ve found myself listening to that thing on repeat; Chris pine is a talented singer, and while it isn’t the best villain song ever, it highlights the fragile insecurities of king magnifico and how he is becoming the same people that destroyed his home. It puts his personality on full blast, like a villain song should (I suggest we enjoy what we got, cuz it might not happen again 😂). My personal favorite was “with what I know now.” Banger in my opinion. Finally, the characters were a job well done. Asha has her strong focus on bettering her community, while also displaying weaknesses that the king can exploit. King magnifico is the definition of millennials these days (I’m kidding), dahlia is the anchor that keeps her friend group in line, and Valentino is…well he’s Valentino. Certainly no annoying Olaf, that’s for sure. I’m no film critic. I have no credentials. If you think this movie is a sack of shit, go off king. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and i can’t take that away. What I don’t appreciate, however, is people making others collectively object to something they could have enjoyed, or clowning on the artists who poured their sweat and tears into something designed to say “thank you.” Not every movie can be a spiderverse. Not every movie can be a puss in boots. They shouldn’t be. Animation is a forever changing art form, and as long as artists young and old have any speck of new vision or input, that’s all that matters. Fawn Veerasunthorn, thanks for putting out your first vision. I appreciate the review, animat.

Wow! This is a well crafted review. Of coarse I enjoyed hearing your opinion on the movie. What I found to be the best part of it is that you were showing your straightforward honesty on what you think of the film itself. As a Disney fan myself, I’m still optimistic to check this out. Also, as much as I want to stay supportive for the next Frozen sequels and Zootopia 2, i do want Disney Animation to be careful with those and not overflow their schedule with sequels. Seeing and supporting Wish in theaters would convince Disney Animation alone to not overflow their schedule with sequels. I think we can all agree that this could’ve been worse. I’m really glad you enjoyed this film. I also enjoyed it turn when I saw it earlier. I can agree the story had its flaws for being a typical Disney film with elements going too fast, but I did enjoy some humor, the animation is great, characters were enjoyable, and I liked some of the songs. Although, the movie would’ve been much better if it was hand drawn

Just saw the movie myself and I thought it was alright. I really admired the art direction, most of the songs, the various references, everything involving Star, and its message on wishes, but the story felt lacking in some parts. It's probably just me, but I feel like King Magnifico's dissension to madness could've been a bit more gradual, considering how quickly it happened after using that forbidden spell book. It would've been a good way of showing how his personality affected how he used that forbidden magic, rather than the magic itself seemingly taking control of him. His wife also could've shown some reluctance with keeping Magnifico trapped in that crystal, only doing so after giving it some thought. I also found Asha's 'Seven Dwarves' friends kind of forgettable due to their one-note personalities, aside from maybe the Grumpy and Sleepy counterparts. Despite those gripes though, I'm still glad I saw this movie. I can at least tell that a lot of heart was put into this film, including its themes on wishes. Plus, I really hope they'll continue experimenting with the cel-shaded CGI look in their future films.

I saw this movie last night, and I had a blast. I really enjoyed the songs, the animation was cool to look at, I really like the character of Asha, and I especially enjoyed that we had a pure Disney villain instead of a twist villain. While I did have some problems with some characters and their ways of delivering the humor, as well as how some elements could’ve been fleshed out better, these flaws weren’t enough to ruin my experience watching this film. I’m glad I got to see this in theaters (as well as not let the negative online reviews get to me), and here’s hoping more people come to enjoy this movie too. Good job on this review, Mat!

I honestly think the hate for this movie is also due to bad timing. These days pretty much almost every fandom has become toxic in a negative way, and will do anything to tear something apart no matter what. ESPECIALLY the Disney fandom. It's a shame too, cause I really think the hate for this film is a little unfair. It's a celebration of Disney animation. And that's good enough for me.

Not to mention, of what I interpreted, it was all due to fandom entitlement. I believe it would be a good time to either read or watch Misery. Another note, this unnecessary hatred against Wish became very intense that my response is 'Isn't this like the time in which Hideaki Anno and Gainax made the last three episodes of Evangelion and how it got a similar response? At least, these people didn't go as far as putting spiteful hate graffiti on the studio and even sending death threats to the crew.'

We should all know that disney's 100th year should have at least a quite amount of redeeming qualities. I don't think animation should be hated all the time, it should be loved. (even the original ideas.) It's saving grace is it's animation at least,I I pretty much loved what it was trying to do, I know it's trying to mimic the cel animation replica of the 90s and 2000s, it would work very well if it was 2d animation with bits of cg (same goes for encanto).

(Outside of you of course) When It was coming out I knew that this was going to be very special for Disney and trying to make it a masterpiece like the classics already felt like it was too much pressure for it to reach. Certainly, I know it's not "Oscar-worthy" but I know that considering the references you know for a fact it's all made with love and really does make the picture seem worthwhile. Since you said you didn't want to mention all the references, here are some of my favorites: - Of course the watercolor-like effect is a nod to Sleeping Beauty as you mentioned, but that's not all! Sleeping Beauty also affected the shape of Wish as Wish uses a 2.55:1 aspect ratio, which Disney hasn't used since Sleeping Beauty. - Star's face was inspired by Mickey Mouse's face. - According to Asha, her father used to tell her that “the stars are there to guide us,” which is a reference to Mufasa. - Vials that resemble Yzma’s poison potions can be seen in Magnifico’s lab. The moving books reference Sword & the Stone. The Poison Apple from Snow White can even be spotted in the lab. - When Asha heads out into the forest, she wears a periwinkle blue cloak with a magenta bow. This fittingly references the Fairy Godmother! - The I'm A Star musical number alone is chock full of them! The flowers are a nod to Alice in Wonderland, the sentient trees and raccoon are a nod to Pocahontas, Valentino saying "See, that's where all the balls of gas come from!" references Pumbaa, there's of course Little John and Bambi, the mushrooms saying "We love crazy!" are a nod to Frozen, and there's even a squirrel that references the ones in Sword & the Stone!

I do not think Wish deserves to be criticized for its 2D-3D hybrid animation, when Sofia the First was a Disney Junior series similar to Wish that probably used to not be attacked for doing the same thing. Sure, Wish is not Nimona in terms of unique storytelling or dynamic animation, but does it _need to be_ to not be hated by most of the internet in 2023? Nimona was widely applauded for telling a cool and unusual story for animated kids' film stories and celebrating 20 years of Blue Sky animation, so as long as Wish can tell a decent and fun story with likable characters, why would it not be allowed the same applause for doing what it does to celebrate 100 years of Disney animation? I mean, I understand those people who are upset with Disney for shutting down a floundering animation studio when half of their films were Ice Age and Rio, but I never used that as an excuse to hate everything Disney does, even when their newer films are any good. Maybe Wish only feels like a generic or bad movie in comparison to Nimona, when they are different types of movies that should not be compared that unfairly, and Wish might actually be good when stacked up against other classic movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios that it was made to celebrate. As if it was bad enough that “Strange World” broke Disney Animation's winning streak at the box office ever since “Bolt”, it's quite shocking how “Wish” broke their winning streak with the critics since “Meet the Robinsons”. I thought this was a good mixture of old and new with its storytelling, animation, characters, and music. It shouldn't be looked down upon as a generic rehash of Disney, but more as a celebration of all things the animation division has done over the years.

I thought Wish was pretty good as both a film and a celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary. I really like the animation, the songs are pretty good, and some characters do have charm to them especially King Magnifico being an actual full fledged disney villain. My favorite character would probably be Gabo. But I do wish the story was better handled and less predictable, and that some characters like asha friends had much more of an active role and depth in their personalities. I give it a 7.5/10, not the best but I really enjoy this celebration of Disney. But from the reactions I’ve seen it looks like it’s becoming the next Pocahontas. If you remember the production of that film, it was supposed to put Disney creativity and storytelling to a new level and be a serious competitor for an Oscar for best picture. But instead, while it ended up successful in theaters, it was flop with critics and audiences back then. Sure, it’s now a cult favorite but back then it was considered the weakest of the Disney renaissance. So, I’m thinking the same might happen here too. Also, I’m hoping that Disney animation makes a hand drawn Mickey Mouse feature film in 2028. That would be a cool way to celebrate his 100th anniversary.

I personally loved it. I think a lot of people are set with a woman need to find her prince as the Disney montra. This has a female lead wanting to do the best for her community. It gives the power of the individual back to themselves. They shouldn't rely on one man to grant their wish or run their lives. Asha is trying to make their world a better place by making it more fair and individually responsible for themselves and their outcomes. Everyone had a wish/dream. No one should take that away from you. I'd recommend this film again and again. The diversity in the characters is refreshing and so needed. Not only do they showcase folks that are racially different, they also gave her best friend with a disability. These aspects of the film is so revolutionary. This represents the way the real world looks like. Again, I praise this film and I stand by it. I love it. The message, the acting, the music the colors, and the animation was a total win. . @@gamestation2690 Well, here's the thing. When Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse came out in 2018, it took animation to a whole new level. Frozen 2 (2019) was not as good as the first Frozen (2013), but it still beat the original as the highest-grossing animated film ever (Not counting Lion King Remake) Things were getting worse for Disney by the time COVID came around. Onward (2020) was Pixar's first box office bomb since The Good Dinosaur (2015) Raya (2021) was good to many people, and possibly Ecanto (2021). Meanwhile, Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022) were on Disney+ Strange World and Lightyear were box office bombs in 2022. Meanwhile, Dreamworks' The Bad Guys and Puss N Boots 2 did well at the box office, as their styles look pretty much like Spiderverse. Illumination had the highest-grossing animated film of 2022 with Minions: The Rise of Gru. Illumination may have also topped it again in 2023 with The Super Mario Bros Movie. Elemental flopped at first, but earned more money afterward I think. Meanwhile, Wish was going to be another big Disney hit, but it wasn't really the case. I have seen Wish and let me tell you. This is what I have been waiting for quite some time and it is a triumphant return to Classic Disney. In fact, even with the teaser trailer, I have been preparing to see all of the films of the Disney Animated Canon (even The Black Cauldron and minus Home on the Range and Chicken Little for obvious reasons) and played Epic Mickey (in which I have made similarities prior before seeing the film as they were both celebrating Disney's legacy albeit in different ways) to prepare to see not only Wish but also Once Upon A Studio. Now, as for those naysayers that say that the story of Wish is generic and bland, well here is the twist in the knife fact for all of you, many, if not all, of the films that Disney have made over the century has very generic and bland stories, if you take away the fairy tale aspect of most of their films based on existing fairy tales, yet they were able to be timeless and beloved and that is what Wish is going for. Also for the multiple allusions to other Disney films, I very much enjoyed it, probably because I have never ever watched anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story is classical for a very valid reason, the characters are charming and lovely (I really liked Asha, Sabino is suprisingly my favourite character due to his role in the story and characterisation, Magnifico is the finest and quite the sadistic villain in quite some time and as for Star, it would be as if you combine the personality and energy of the Little Prince and the face shape and eyes of Mickey Mouse and that is enough for me to love him instantly), the theme of community is very strong and admirable, the humour actually gave me very good chuckles, outstanding voice acting, songs that were actually very striking with memorable and inventive lyrics, fantastic score and the animation is lovely and even beautiful. I meant it with utmost sincerity. For anyone who is saying that Wish felt as if it is done by an AI and even dissing the crew because of it in terms of the animation, songs and even the story, clearly you have no respect for the crew who actually made the film. You may call me a naive, even to say ignorant and mushy-brained, fool for all you want, but I gurantee you, you were definetly missing out on something wonderful if you stop being cynical all the time and hopping on board on the Disney Hate Express. With all that out of the way, prepare to hear the full story of Wish, but be wary for some spoilers... Asha's motivation is clear from the start as she cared so much about her community, friends and family, especially her beloved great grandfather Sabino, who is a 100 years old (fitting, I might add) and is celebrating his birthday and is also a blend of the Minstrel from Sleeping Beauty and Georges Hautecourt from The Aristocats and not to mention a brilliant ode and salute to Milt Kahl, one of the Nine Old Men (My father even stated Sabino resembled his own grandfather especially his facial features). Asha is very likeable from that very information alone. As for the Teens who were obvious allusions to the Dwarves, they actually have their own personalites, especially in their vocal performances and character animation, rather than repeats. Simon, who is an allusion to Sleepy, is actually one of the more fascinating member of Asha's friends. See, I would like to imagine that whilst Simon dozes off, which he does, he actually dreams that Rosas is going to be in great peril thanks to Magnifico, and that he is aware of the king's wickedness, but doesn't want to mention it to his friends just yet. When it appeared as if Simon betrayed his friends by revealing the whereabouts of Asha and Star, he did it because he is afraid for anyone of his community to spot both Asha and Star and reporting to Magnifico so he risked his life just to save them. That is an admittedly reckless yet gut-punching and brave move that this young man has ever done. Talking of Magnifico, let us analyse his villainy by using the dragon motif as seen from the forbbiden book. When we first see him, his appearance resembles Elliot from Pete's Dragon. When he is slightly tempted to use the book, he resembles Madam Mim's dragon form from The Sword in the Stone and when he embraced his wickedness, he resembles Maleficent's dragon form from Sleeping Beauty. In other words, Magnifco seemed to be a charming and benevolent dragon but he is actually vicious, narcissistic and dangerous. Also, during the "I'm a Star" sequence, the trees came to life. It made me call back to the Silly Symphony short, Flowers and Trees, where the titular trees and flowers were anthropomorphised. Lastly, the post credit scene after the end credits. Sabino playing Wish Upon a Star on his lute to the night sky. Just think about it, this old fellow about 100 playing a beautiful song on a classical instrument to the night sky. This little scene made my heart move in awe in the best way possible as this is a profound and beautiful way to end the film.

Honestly I’d probably give Wish a 5/10 at most. It’s not a terrible movie, per se, but is just so unoriginal, bland and forgettable that I almost wish it *was* bad so I at least had something to remember it for, like with Chicken Little. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and I don’t fault anyone else who does. But after leaving the theater, I just knew I wouldn’t remember anything about this movie after seeing it. And knowing that Disney is capable of far better than this, I wish (heh) that they would shoot for the stars instead of settling for mediocrity like they currently are.

Elemental was praised by most critics though? It was the (regular) people who are bashing it everywhere in the social media calling it woke and uncreative and other shit. People are telling us to stay away from it, while the critics on the other hand mostly say it is enjoyable and are urging us to watch it. You didn't watch Elemental? The one to blame are not the critics, but the people who are bashing it. And many critics does praise Wish. I mean, the Rotten Tomato Tatometer is 50% indicating that 50% of the critics does praise and recommend us to watch Wish. If you think Tatometer is an indication of quality, then it says that Wish is just middling, smack in the middle in terms of quality. Reading the reviews would tell you that most of the critics consider Wish to be just middling or average, very few outright say that it is bad and there are few that says it is very good. "I was also shocked by the bad reviews. Seriously, what's going on with some critics?" -Come on. Rotten Tomato Audience Rating is 78% telling us that there are 22% percent who give it a bad rating. Are you going to say "Seriously, what's going on with some of the audience?" It is not like Animat isn't giving bad ratings to films that people liked. He practically give seal of garbage for films like Transylvanian and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Films that both critics and audience liked that Animat labels as garbage. They are just giving us their opinions about it and that is it. Like, you expect everyone to have the same opinion as you. If you like it, then everyone should like it and vice versa. If they don't agree with you, then something is seriously wrong going on with them.
