It's kind of hilarious when you talk about Asha's afro-latino, non-cultural thing. Because she purposely has "woke" skin tone, but her character is essentially what the woke criticize as the blended white culture. It sounds like the main human character from the Emoji movie who is engineered to be as generic as possible to "appeal" to everyone and no one at the same time.

Basically they wanted to do a movie with every Disney easter egg and checklist of what to do; but forgot to do an actual movie with original plot and ideas... Sad.

I think what you said about Disney being "too careful" to design their female characters defines current Hollywood. They're so scared to offend ANYONE that all characters are generic, blank slates. There is no drama, nothing to tickle your brains, to make you feel anything. The static character arc is usually very boring, but there are many ways to handle it well; this is definitely not one of those cases.

You don't think the ending a bit odd for kids? The queen helps imprison her husband in a device, shows no remorse about his fate and takes over his position as leader. A very good example for kids - husbands suck and coups are the way forward.

Honestly it think the thing that hurt this movie the most is that they had to hit the villain with the crazy stick otherwise he would be the hero. I haven’t started this video yet so I’m just going to say what I think up front. I liked the idea of Disney finally having a straightforward villain again but they didn’t deliver since in the first half of the movie, he’s not evil just misguided and in the second he’s enslaved by a magic book. I like the message of actively seeking out what you want instead of just wishing but I honestly think that it’s muddled by the ending where Asha becomes the new Fairy Godmother. (I also think that the same message was better done by Aladdin and for that matter by Puss in Boots 2). And I think Encanto had much better songs. I do like the Easter Eggs to older Disney movies and I wouldn’t call this movie bad. I think that it’s average more than anything else.

Sorry, my Disney boycott still stands. Will perhaps reconsider if they do a full remival of the entire current C suite, including Marvel and Lucasfilm. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! ❤

I just can't get over how bad the writing is to see this. Magnifico likes control, so he wants to hire an apprentice and then shows the candidates how the wishes work? That makes zero sense. How the hell can't people figure out mathematically not all wishes would be granted (since he only does one a month) - can't they do a basic fucking calculation and see the odds? When they give up their wishes, do they also forget why they came to Rosas in the first place AND forget that Magnifico can grant wishes? Why should Magnifico be forced to use his powers for others? He went and founded the island, so clearly there are other places in the world. Leave and go work hard yourself to grant wishes if it's a big deal. Or Asha could've just played the long game and learn how to grant wishes and then rebel! And that's just a fraction of the issues. They didn't remotely think this thing through. What a let down for the 100 year anniversary movie. (For the math, let's say there are 5000 people and no one is born, moves in or dies. He grants 12 wishes a year (and people SHOULD recall that happening). That's almost 417 YEARS before he hits everyone. Why would anyone be shocked that their wish won't be granted?)

I also disagree; Asha's "culture" (a fictional island in the Mediterranean sea with New York diversity that's somehow "Latinx") is the culmination of Disney's inoffensive homogeneity that they've been doing since at least the 90s. Jasmine's supposed to be Arabian, but her film had India/South Asian references (cause they all brown, get it?). Mulan was Chinese, but was pan-East Asian. Elsa is pan-Scandinavian/Northern European. Moana had criticism for being ambiguously pan-Polynesian, and Raya was pan-Southeast Asian with a mostly East Asian VA.

Weirdly, I agree with the king. If you give everyone their wish, that totally wouldn't ruin society. Plus, they knowingly move there and give up their wish. WILLINGLY. This movie is actually stupid.

Thanks for the review, Greg! Great balance. At the holiday table yesterday, this movie came up and the parents said it looked cute and they'd catch it with their kids on Disney+. BUT - that's a MAJOR problem for Disney. They don't gain anything EXTRA for that. If they hadn't left streamers like Netflix, they'd be gaining third party revenue in the millions. Now with D+, Disney is just transferring money from the right to left pocket and not gaining revenue. They put all their eggs in one theatrical basket.

i feel like you didn't delve into the other fundamental cog-diss-- that making a teenage girl the permanent....Vajtator (girl version of dictator?) and presumably in total, uncontested control of the realm (including magic?), for life, for no particular reason, is somehow the perfectly reasonable solution to all problems in life.

My deepest wish involves Lucy Liu. Don't think it will be ever granted. Especially now she's got that restraining order....

According to Film Threat they were contacted by both current and former animators, and they said the original concept of the movie was the origins of "When you wish upon a star", which I think would be more fitting for a movie celebrating 100yrs. All that aside, I only plan to see this movie if my 7yr old girl have interest in seeing it. I have no desire to sit through a mediocre movie, especially when there was a time when Disney had the secret source when it came to their movie.

Isn't this movie set in Europe? So unless the main character is from a country based on the Latin American region (which DOES NOT include any European countries, not even Spain), to call her Afro-Latina would be inaccurate. Assuming she's from a Spain-like country, she'd be Hispanic but not Latina, as she is from a Spanish speaking country (which would be Hispanic), but she is not from Latin American countries in South/Central America (which would have been Latina).

I don’t understand the logic behind the premise of this film. Why are people giving their wishes away instead of working toward them? I guess you couldn’t work toward things like flying, invisibility, etc. but, in the real world, we get along just fine and can lead happy lives without those abilities.

Hi! Animation student here! A few peers and I talked about this movie when it came out, we believe they tried to go Spiderverse with the animation but failed to do so. The movie looked more like “3D animation with a pretty storyboard background” which I agree. I loved seeing the concept art they had more than watching the movie and wish (ha) they went more for that than the end product

Afro-latina. Kinda like Miles Morales in spider-verse. (Just saw the second one). What makes him an interesting character is because he has an arch, not his heritage, (Unless your talking about the spider heritage which certainly plays a strong role there).

Despite being an attempt to go back to its renaissance roots, none of these songs felt like they came from that era.

I wonder if they have forgotten Elana of Avalore. They probably cant do much with Sophia the 1st due to being too white but its worth investigating.

In my opinion, the fatal mistake in this film was that Disney recruited inappropriate songwriters and composers for a film celebrating 100 years of Disney. Julia Michaels as the songwriter for this film is indeed talented, but she is new to writing songs for Disney and it seems like she doesn't really understand how to write songs in storytelling musical films like this one properly, so most of the songs aren't that impressive or memorable. For Disney's 100th anniversary film, Disney should have recruited songwriters and composers who had experience working at Disney before, such as Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Glenn Slater, The Lopezs, Lin Manuel Miranda, and at least they collaborated so that the songs would be impressive. They all have more experience writing songs to tell stories in films than Julia Michaels. It's a shame that a film that was supposed to be a celebration of Disney's 100th anniversary ended up like this 😢

I haven't seen Wish yet so i can only comment on what I've seen in the trailer. The biggest things for me are the adorkable MC which i don't mind, unless it's the ONLY MC I'm being given. It was fun with Rapunzel but now i feel like i know these characters already. There's nothing for me to learn about them, or how they'll handle their challenges. And while they're relatable in the sense of 'yes, I also have some weird quirks' that tends to be it. There's nothing as substantial as Mulan's struggle to measure up to her family's expectations, or Meg's independent to a fault nature, or Cinderella's sheer perseverance. And then there's the animation. I don't know... What they were going for. You CAN blend 3D and 2D in a number of ways. Anime does it a lot these days, delivering a product that's 2D in appearance but incorporates 3D for environments or complex creatures, and they turn out some very dynamic stuff. You can also do it in a far more stylized manner, creating almost like a storybook effect. But i don't think they had a specific style they were aiming for. It looks flat, especially the lighting, and there's a couple points in the trailer where the effects looked... Odd. It almost felt like there were missing frames, but only in the effects. I do want to see it, there are things that look fun, but I'm not expecting anything on par with old Disney. I do want them to get back there, though, one day..m

Your review made me think of all the classical Disney princess stories. It looks like most of them have “meh” princess characters but the Villains, my oh my are they interesting. Think Aurora and Maleficent, they made movies and sequel out of the villain. Again w/ snow white and the Evil Queen, a whole abc TV series sprung out of the Evil Queen. Even Cinderella and Lady Tremaine, lady Tremaine is quite interesting and expressive. So, at least Disney did return to its roots in that regard. Asha may well could have been anyone, so the bare minimum they did was give her brown color and cornrows.

I don't know man, magnifico turning evil seemed kind of forced and came out of the blue. It just didn't make sense from what he was described to be. He didn't have enough backstory to warrant that kind of turn.

I liked it and it benefits from how badly I wanted to like it. But I have to say the biggest disappointment for me was the music. I know you guys liked it, but the writers primarily work on contemporary pop music for stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez and while they’re talented, it shows. They didn’t sound at all like Disney bangers to me. I wish they’d had more of the theatrical musical deal-I was SO EXCITED to see we were getting a real villain song and when I saw it was called “At All Costs” I was READYYYYY. I wanted it to be like “Be Prepared” or “Poor Unfortunate Souls” but instead…it was generic pop ballad. I didn’t get it at all. If you read the lyrics, he’s singing to the wishes…but it genuinely reads like a scrapped song for a celebrity that they tweaked for the movie. I really hated that. Ughhhh I wanted this to be excellent so bad but I’m tired of the quirky protagonist and the pop music and the fart jokes. Also the fact that Asha’s hair never left her shoulder made me physically uncomfortable and I kept trying to brush my own hair out of my face and back because it bothered me so much 😂😂

The parallel with Disney parks pricing gets me haha Disney paid expensively for its newer films, which are said to be generally degrading in quality. Meanwhile guests paid expensively for vacation at Disney parks, which are said to be degrading in quality.

I haven't seen the movie yet, so I won't say too much. But from what I have heard is that the antagonist was definitely the best character. The negative I have heard is that the central message was more like a defiant child disrespecting more knowledgeable authority figures. It was challenging the kings wisdom to know what's best for the nation and that just giving everybody what they want with no limits is dangerous. But again, I haven't seen it, so I will wait to chime in seriously.

So... If the country they are in it's a "latino" one, then yes, people can be and are different skin tone (trust me, that can happen even in the same family... Heck, my skin have different shades according the time of day, how much time I spend outside and the type of clothes I use, i know it's weird but true). The setting, being a Colonial type, it's kinda true. Every Latin American country does have at least one zone or mini city with the building from the Colonial time. With the villain, it's also common to see the person in charge be "magnificent" in public and go ballistic when it's position it's threaten. And, if you believe the rumors, they do have tides with a "brujo" (a witch) that help him get in power and stay there. But the "no clear culture" thing, it's almost true. It's almost imposible to not find traces of influence of the races that mixed back in the day, but that mixed was what makes the things you identify as Latino, ours. And because every country in Latin America was mixed a tad bit different, there are subtle differences between ourself too. The protagonist drive to grant every single wish, though, it's factually a bad idea. But leaving it to a person that it's the representation of the government in Latin America, it's kinda worst, if our political climate it's anything to go by, at least

I was hoping someone would explain the weird pseudo-2D-3D artstyle and animation. I feel like they were trying to recreate the old hand-drawn style in 3D, to which I say...why just do it in 2D to begin with? They didn't have to use painted cels and it's a lot easier to draw and animate in 2D than ever! Cuphead used traditional means. It was made by a handful of people and look at how good it turned out!

I've never been disappointed at a Disney animated movie all my life and I grew up with the Disney Renaissance. That being said, Wish is one of my least favorite Disney movies. Just as underwhelming as Frozen II.

This plot feels vague and confusing, where the bad guys plan is kind of bad but he has some points and maybe if he did the same things but a bit better it would be okay. It just feels lame as drama.

Yeah no sorry I trusted Disney after Andor on Ashoka and on MOM after Spider-Man No Way Home only to get burned with both a boring half-lecture and sometimes just a boring story. They destroyed characters I loved such as Ahsoka, Sabine and Hera and just misused characters like Thrawn and Ezra. Then reset characters like Wanda Maxim-off and retconned a story about how your loss can lead you to hurt everyone else around you. So I will not be willing to give anything Disney makes now any of my time or hope. The only thing that makes me feel anything is anime. Like the story of “Frieren: Beyond Journey's End” about appreciating life & the time you do have with those around you. Or Eden’s Zero a story about a journey of adventure and the true meaning of friendship & loyalty. Then Rezero a story about the cost of sacrifice and how you can’t save everyone. No matter how hard you try but that doesn’t mean you give up & just decide to die in a ditch.

guardians 3 was pretty good

Something another KZfaqr pointed out is that ever female main character since Tangled, regardless of ethnicity or whatever, has had the exact same face. Is that intentional? Are they just really lazy at making faces? Are they just reusing animation assets? What's going on there?

Disney's concept of "wishing" has always been suspect. From the old song, "everything your heart desires will come to you" is a popular refrain, but nowhere close to realistic or aspirational. Similarly, the concept of an Entity (loopy King, loopy godmother, whatever) that grants wishes is little more than a dysfunctional and supremely shallow misunderstanding of God. The Disney writers of old would have had a hard time with this. The modern Woke Mafia was never going to be able to produce anything good with this concept.

So...this movie is a representation of how Walt Disney "really" wanted to start off his career with, right? Basically, if white didn't sell when he was growing up and the country was all about diversity and fun and fancy free living?

15 years ago, I would agree that this would fall more along the lines of a traditional Disney film. However, when you explain that its about an old, white male...who holds all the power, is squandering the hopes and dreams of his subjects (most of which are not old or white), and that he can only be defeated by a strong, diverse female character... So, if by "traditional", you mean continuing to be the propaganda division of the woke movement, then yeah, I guess they're still doing that. lol

Its nice for Disney to try and get back to the tride and true formula for them and this was a step in the right direction, but its still is very lacking in the magic that made their older movies so much more enjoyable. Asha is yeah bland that whole advertising her being a latino and african mix was just more Disney baiting to get this very absent crowd of people to see this movie. Its the classic we are gonna make a character diverse and instead they are just an empty box that could have been any other character. The villian's motivation being simple greed is good. Though it seemed like he went from being reasonable to just pure bad without any kind of build up to that either. IDK. The music seems more just straight up pop instead of trying to adapt music from certain cultures which again made their older music more interesting. Seems like a very meh movie, but it seems like something kids would follow.

Disney + has basically killed the Disney box office. Elemental was actually pretty good, nothing special but decent enough. Where did I watch it? Disney + this looks alright too but where will I watch it? Disney +; the reason? I will only have to wait a few weeks to stream in the house for free.

Satanism: The Movie The villain is an analog for God the Father. A king who hears everyone's prayers. But Satanists see God as a tyrant, who would answer some prayers and not others based on who worships him. And the heroine, teams up with a fallen star. Lucifer, the morning star, who was cast down from heaven. Satanists see Lucifer as a heroic figure, who rebelled against a tyrannical god. To them, he is Prometheus, a bringer of light. And the heroine's sidekick is a goat. Symbolizing that Asha is not a sheep, but a goat. Goats also being a common symbol of satan and satanism.

Six kids to movies? Yikes.

So it’s a good mediocre movie which you can play in the background during family gatherings and the holidays where everyone is talking to each other and not watching the movie? Well…neat.
