Disney unveiled it's first look at the live action remake of Snow White which will release in 2025. Production has been delayed and they have revealed they are going with CGI dwarves. Why this is a terrible idea and why Peter Dinklage's comments are not to blame.

I remember the interview with one of the dwarfs and he was 100% real and blamed Peter for their loss of jobs. He was self-aware, realize and stated something along the lines of "I'm a dwarf, I'm never going to be a Tom Cruise action star. But what I can play is a dwarf in snow white"

The interesting thing is that they could have used real little people. They didn’t. They hired a bunch of people to play against Rachel Ziegler so she has someone to interact with considering we don’t even know who has been cast for any of these roles with the exception of Grumpy and the actor for Grumpy has a relationship with Disney on the Pirates movie. Disney knowing they were actually going to CGI them to look more like themselves the entire time bizarrely says nothing. One corner of the internet rage baits because it’s their sole means of getting engagements and clicks anymore. Now we get an official look of what things were always supposed to be and the narrative is “we got them to change it” when it probably should be “why didn’t they just hire actual little people to be seen???”. Especially when a modernized script can be shifted and change the perception people have, but we’re likely getting literal caricatures because the audience will flip shit if they don’t get the same shit they got 86-87 years ago when they weren’t even alive lmao.

I think there were several dwarfs used in "Time Bandits" and that is a really awesome film. Tony Cox has been awesome in many films ("Bad Santa" and "Bad Santa 2" being the two dearest to my heart). I don't know if technically he was a "dwarf" but Michael J. Anderson was super awesome in the TV series "Carnivàle", Twin Peaks, and a small appearance as a motel clerk in X-Files. Point being, there are some GREAT ones out there if film makers want to look/ find them.

I agree with you. Dinklage likely did not mean to have Disney take away those roles for actors with dwarfism. However, he should have been savvy enough to know that interviewers are not friends. He should not have said things that he would have said if he were in a casual setting with friends while having a drink.

Dwarfs are fictional creatures. People with Achondroplasia have a genetic disorder. Those are two very different things. The dwarfs in the books have no shortened limbs, with a normal-sized Torso and head. So the only thing they have in common is the small size. Peter shouldn't want to stop movies with fictional dwarfs, he should fight to educate people. CGI makes it possible to depict the fictional dwarfs in the way they are described in the fairy tale book from the 17. Century. That's a good thing. Peter should fight that talented people with Achondroplasia get normalized in movies. He himself is a great example that you can play a distinguished and serious role with Achondroplasia, and that this condition doesn't have to do anything with the character the actor represents. In Games of Thrones he represented a person with Achondroplasia, but that was just a little part of him. Tyrion Lannister was much more interesting for his cunning wit and brilliant ideas. That is what the community of Little People of America (LPA) and actor guilds should focus on. Not to stop making fairy tale movies.

That is EXACTLY what I wanted to say - just because someone has a genetic condition that is commonly called 'dwarfism' doesn't mean you should equate yourself to fictional characters called dwarves - or try to have those characters removed. Snow White pre-dates Peter, and the term Dwarfism, by just a little (LOT). He's trying to own a discrimination that doesn't exist, and if it does, has more to do with popular terminology rather than fictional characters. Totally up for the word Dwarfism to be removed from the popular lexicon. Will that help representation for people who have this condition - maybe not - but neither does feeling that you have to employ Peter Dinklage to represent and give you a pass card on anything that has dwarves in it. No one person should have that power of veto - or pass.

I feel like the dwarves in the original were based on the fictional race like from D&D, but just because they are shorter than the average person they are connected to real life short people instead of the fiction they were based off of.

Its based on Germanic fairytales. Not a Disney or D&D fiction, nor Tolkien. This is thousands of years ago, not like 86. Even then D&D didn't exist when the original released.

I think your opinion was interesting. My only difference was that the dwarves in Snow White aren’t people with dwarfism, they are a made up race that people with dwarfism are really perfect for the part. It was a take off of fantasy made up race of smaller, really tough, bearded miners. The sad part is the new thoughts (woke) look at stuff and try to find hate instead of trying to find the best of movies or stories. I agree that Peter Dinklage is an incredible actor and sadly he got involved with the culture war without intending to. Keep up the great work on your reviews.

I honestly think you could have still cast little people but you needed to make the 7 dwarves a multi generational family that because of their status as dwarves are forced to live coutside the kingdom. It could have been a more respectful approach and still castes little people.

Peter Dinklage actually was denied the part of one of the seven dwarfs. He petitioned Disney for the part but they wanted unknown actors for the seven dwarfs. That’s when he became vocal and hypocritical in his interviews. Plus the seven dwarfs were “magical creatures” the fairytale. Also the seven dwarfs didn’t live in a cave. They worked in the mines. In fact they have a home, a beautiful cottage Snow White moves into.

It should be very difficult to write-off an actors appearance when doing a remake of any well known classic film or TV .Modern Hollywood has been notorious for race and gender swapping roles and consumers are tired of it. He basically says that is Snow White can be a loud mouthed Latina why do her dwarfs have to be...dwarfs. For the same reason Neil Patrick Harris can't play T'Challa.

Well, it's a pan-European fairy tale, almost certainly of Italian origin, with the only real consistent elements being that she has "skin as white as snow", that her (step-)mother wants her dead, and that she is kept safely hidden by some sort of male figures, which is roughly in the versions in Europe's southwest either an old man or a group of bandits, roughly in the versions in the northwest a group of locally popular helpful little magical creatures (e.g. mining dwarfs in the region in Germany, whose versions the Brothers Grimm took as the main sources for their own versions, plural), roughly in the versions in the southeast either giants or even dragons, and roughly in the northeast a group of either knights or cursed princes. All of which is to say that you can absolutely do a film adaptation of Snow White, the fairy tale, with no dwarfs. But it is inane to do specifically a live-action remake of Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first ever feature-length animated film, with no characters resembling its dwarfs. Therefore the CGI copies of Disney's hand-drawn dwarfs of yore are technically better than the extremely diverse traveling troupe. But that doesn't make them any less of a nightmare fuel, especially the giant faces on the oversized "dwarfs", which is most of them. Nor does it make going for CGI creatures of variable sizes, when there are real - i.e. actually live-action - people who could perfectly plausibly portray realistic takes on the classic dwarfs and who as a group get virtually no opportunities for potential breakout roles (nor practical effects work nowadays), any less... misguided, to put it mildly.

Yep. Actually it all started out with beast baphomet and a really lame ass re-creation of the beauty and the beast ballroom scene from 1991. With CGI, disney had every chance to just enhance the looks of Adam/Beast but instead they made him look like baphomet. Too bad people didn’t see all that then, but disney’s live action version of their very own IPs suck, but it just didn’t start with the little mermaid. Granted, frozen was good, but the live action remakes really have been mediocre to awful.

Never really associated midget/dwarfism with fictional/Tolkien-est dwarfs. Other than height there is no similarity. If they were the basis for the creation, then both dwarfs and hobbits are greatly loved.

Peter has a point, don't you see an issue when characters have "names" which are character traits, not actual names ? They're not even characters, they're physical representations of states of mind. There's been a worm in that story from the beginning, even before Disney made the first movie. It's not about having dwarves, or actual small people playing the parts, it's about not representing them as actual characters. The message is "having special bodies doesn't make us special people, nor do we want to be represented as such". We shouldn't look at how people are, but at who they are. Even if the dwarves from the original tales aren't actual small people, that's still how we see them nowadays. We humans are dumb in the way we can't separate fiction from reality properly and let them bleed into one another. In an age of polarization and fixation on ideology, this can't go well.

One thing is for sure: they came up with these dwarfs just a couple of months ago. We had set pictures back in July of what was clearly a different take on the "seven dwarfs", with 7 hippy diverse people (being one of them an actual dwarf). Their costumes, even though I didn't like the designs, looked 100% movie professional, with intrincate paterns and especifically selected colours. Now they show us this and they announce the movie's release date is pushed back a whole year (from March 2024 to March 2025). Taking into account the principal photography wrapped during Summer 2022, yeah, all these things are indicators of them totally changing their minds about what to do with the dwarfs.

Peter Dinklage has a life project, that never seems to get off the ground: a movie after the novel "The Dwarf" by the Nobel Prize winner Pär Lagerkvist. The grotesque dwarf-jester in that novel is a symbol of the corruption and hate in the court. Such a "prejudiced" caricature is obviously not a problem for Mr Dinklage. The movie is listed as "In development" at IMDb.

Everything these days has to be either "It's Woke!" or "Not-Woke" because both of those things get the clicks, ect! Sometimes it's just one persons opinion, not the "The Woke Media". That being said, I totally see how Dinklage would have a personal issue with this, but it's one that has mostly to do with language and the evolution of language. "Dwarf" was a mythical creature first and yes they mined precious metals underground in mythology. According to Old Norse Expert Jackson Crawford, the word "Dwarf" did not have the connotation of being small at first. That only came later, and then the use of the word for actual small people also only happened in relatively modern times, after the mythology. So, we should probably address the issue with language here as well and come to terms with that

I get what he's saying; Disney is progressive in the "representation" of casting a dark skinned American actress to play Snow white a traditionally European character of German folkloreyetvwhennit come to the seven Dwarfs, they go back to medieval superstitious beliefs that they are magical creatures that live in caves. Representing Dwarfs that are hard working, and caring about other people is a bad thing? Plus they work in a cave, they live in a house. And the personalities just represent attributes everybody posses, not just dwarfs. How often has a normal sized person called another normal sized person “Dopey”? Adding actual actors could add tons of depth to these characters.

What Dinklage and people like him clearly don't understand that the original seven dwarves were never a caricature of real life people with dwarfism. Dwarves are fictional / mythological creatures, they are a race, and yes, they are miners! I'm seriously interested in what Dinklage thinks about the dwarves in The Lord of the Rings movies for example. His comment still doesn't make any sense and I still don't understand what his actual problem is. My personal opinion is that the dwarves should be played by actual little people in Snow White, giving them a chance to shine in a role that is clearly made for them (I'd be dying to see Wee Man from Jackass in this lol)! Disney considers themselves so inclusive and progressive and woke etc. so why do they use CGI? It's still better than the so called "seven magical creatures" they went with earlier, but if they have trouble employing little people, why not just use normal sized actors and make them look small? Like in The Lord of the Rings??? I was typing away - and realised that I was writing an essay. At the end, I think you should always say what you feel (and I agreed with much) - but at the same time, I think you are projecting a little too much. What Peter Dinklage said was a dick thing to say - it doesn't mean there's not prejudice - but trying to victimise yourself against a historical use of Dwarves is disingenuous to me. It's entirely right to say that just because you have something called 'dwarfism' doesn't mean you are a fictional dwarf. That's a crap name. In my essay, I supported your view that words hurt - and if enough people think something where the distorted view becomes normal, then this is anti-social. As we are all different in some way. However, I totally disagree that Disney should have asked Peter Dinklage to not only act in the movie, but to direct the dwarf perspective... how does one person represent all of the people that suffer [edit - suffer is the wrong word - exhibit is perhaps better] (the poorly described) dwarfism condition? Should he be head-"dwarf" that can dictate what genetically different actors can/can't do? Lots of people are genetically divergent, but I think we need to be careful to put single people up as representing an entire community. Always. Anyway - this is becoming another essay. I love your independent voice - but in this case... I gave up 3/4 through because I didn't understand how you can say one person can represent everyone. Sorry I couldn't finish your video (this maybe a first for me). Happy to post my essay - but I don't think you (or the interwebs) need that :-)

He may had that in min, and If he did he must be really pissed now that Disney decided to make CGI version of the animated version. I can't even name three good actors who have dwarfism let alone seven. And that's the problem. They need to be good enough to portray a character that's more than just a caricature (if they want an "updated progressive live-action retelling"). I'd say LOTR portrayed "small people" well with the hobbits, but then the actual dwarves in the Hobbit movies were awful looking.

I guess Disney could pull a Once Upon a Time with their Dwarves, as in that show all of the Dwarves where just regular sized men, even their main Dwarf Grumpy/Leroy. But I have a feeling if they did that they would be Angering and Upsetting a lot of people. And people already Hate the Live Action Disney Films as is, all because Disney Either changed too much or not at all for their Live Action Film Adaptations from their Original Animated Source According to others. It feels you can’t make anyone happy these days especially with a big time company like Disney. Anyways with all of that said yeah I agree we need to I wouldn’t say force but, let the targeted audience know that there are people out there with this sort of Condition (I hope that’s not the wrong thing to say) and if later in life they encounter people with this kind of condition they shouldn’t be scared or shocked or whatever of them and treat them like some kind of Circus Freaks. Trust me they are no different than anyone one of us as I was fortunate to have someone with that condition as a classmate from Grades 7 through 11.

The movies attention to controversy were split between using actual dwarf actors, which honestly many want the work. Vs using a latina actress who clearly hated the original story. Honestly, with Disney live action movies and the direction, maybe pick wiser or which I believe they learned catering to woke doesn't sell. All this "controversy" is for short term gain, and it shows.

I do think there is something to be said here about movie studios in general. The argument was always 'you can't appeal to everyone', but the wrong lessons were taken from that, because what they took from that was 'so, we need to pick a side?' NO, don't pick a side, make something honest! Make something without intending to appeal to anyone, just tell a story. Avoid some blatant missteps obviously, do research, but don't create something false or plastic with the intention of pandering to this lobby or that under represented group. If you're going to cast someone from a minority, do it with the intention of hiring them because they are the best fit for the story you're telling, give them a reason to be there, don't make the actor feel like they won a prize or that they are ticking a box, make them your perfect fit for that role, don't cast them cynically like you felt you had to. But this goes beyond casting or telling stories about minorities, I'm talking about story telling in general, the lesson that needs to be learned is that you have to tell a story that is genuine.

I hope the movie releases with the CGI dwarves as shown so we get to hear how many kids it scared the shit out of. I just wish corporations would stop overreacting to headlines. After a few days, everyone would've moved on.

Man this story seems to change every other day. I've been following this on Facebook and have viewed the conservatives from the first time the photo dropped bitch and complain about Snow White not being white enough. Now Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh and others have decided to make their own version of the story. It's going to be interesting to see how the two compare. The old saying goes and is true to this day. You can't please everybody.

They didn't CGI or change Willow for the shitty show AND they hired a real person to play a fictional mermaid... I'm pretty sure 85% of us OG fans are tapping out. Disney is just trying not to get cancelled at this point. P.S. There's no way they "knew" the dwarves were going to be CGI. The full on outfits and NO CGI MoCap suit? That's quite redundant, when typically they just use sticks with a tennis ball at the end so you know where to focus. The voices easily could've just been an intern giving the lines for the daylies...

I think this is proof that overall actors/actresses are pretty dumb. First off, no one is making these people do interviews. There's plenty of successful actors that you almost never hear speak in public. These individuals understand that they're professional pretenders and are fortunate enough to get paid quite well for this amazing and unique skill. Often times paid more than even the President of our country! Secondly, this interview was no secret that just now is making the rounds. I heard this interview months ago when the first absolutely ridiculous images of Snow White and her um diverse simps leaked out. Who are we, as normal sized humans, to make any commentary on what Peter Dinklage said? All I know is that the community of height challenged actors seem pretty upset with the Dinkster and it's their right to be upset. I was a HUGE fan of Billy Barty growing up and some of my favorite films involve dwarfs (Legend, Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings, etc.) and I can't imagine a world where instead of giving these talented human beings more opportunities we're now replacing them with "diverse" normal sized actors or what's worse, CGI!! I may disagree with you on this one Alachia but I still love hearing your thoughts and opinions!!

It is not a caricature of dwarves. Dwarves are fairytale creatures. They're not little people. Dinklage wasn't offended by The Hobbit. It's full of dwarves showing every single stereoptypical character trope dwarves are known for. If Dinklage identifies himself as a fantasy dwarf, he needs professional help. And it isn't progressive to have Snow White played by a latino actress, it's just odd, although not unprecedented. But these people must decide, if it's outragous if a straight actor plays a gay role, or it's outragous if a little person plays a dwarf. Because those two "rules" are mutually exclusive. I'd say, actors should play whatever (as they've always done), since they're making movies, not documentaries. But that requires the ability to think, which less and less people seem to have.

If people think Peter Dinklage has a say in the casting then they're extremely naive. The casting of this Snow White is some Liberal BS. It reminds me of the casting of the Australian/New Zealand co-production of Journey to the West where they cast zero Chinese Australians or Chinese New Zealanders in the four titular roles. They were robbed of an opportunity to play these timeless characters that belong to their culture. Not casting little people for the roles sounds more anti-little people than anything. I was so insulted they chose two Tongans, an Australian and a guy half-Thai to play Monkey. I work in the film industry in New Zealand and people couldn't understand my disappointment...except for my Chinese New Zealand actor friends. I would love to see Tony Cox as one of the seven dwarfs because he's still a dwarf. Rant over.

At least in my part of the world it isn't normal. I can recall a single instance in my life where someone made a disparaging comment on the "street" and the offender was like 7 years old alerting their mother, who was apologizing profusely. So no, not common at all. And i would seriously question and challenge that behavior if it happened regularly. Something seriously fucked up with a society that tolerates such public behavior. @@kurtrivero368

In an effort to be Devil’s Advocate I can see an argument being made for CGI because it makes it easier to have characters that “look” like the characters on the ride (at least their faces); which Disney spent a lot of money on and their movies are advertising for their parks; without making real little people into caricatures; which in this day and age would not have been a good look. Could it have been handled better? Absolutely, but imho they should just stop with the live remakes.

The interviewer sucked. He didn't dig deeper to get Dinklage to explain what was wrong with the previous representation and how it should be changed. Rather, he pretended to have a sophisticated understanding that he didn't really have. If the interviewer had dug deeper, Dinklage's real opinion (whatever it was) would have been made clear.

I agree. That's why the interview has been taken so far out of context. Peter was just giving an opinion on probably something that contractually has given him a lot of grief personally. I have never seen the 7 dwarves as a negative but I'm sure he has.
