Going back to my days at Holden, the VL Commodore (Nissan Engine) had a set up which cut power to the fuel pump and oxygen sensor heater wire (on the same circuit) if the relay didn't receive spark signal after 10 seconds in case the fuel line got damaged in an accident. Because you got rid of the factory ECU the timer was coming into play.

Some of the old dattos have a fuel cut off switch based on oil pressure. They turn off the fuel when there is no oil pressure. The reason it probably starts for a bit and then shuts off is because they have a timer that will allow it to run with no oil pressure when it first starts up (so the fuel pump will still run when the engine is off and you go to start the car)

Pretty sure most Nissan's of the 80's & 90's era has those fuel control units. Basically just a unit with 2 earths, on direct to earth and the other via a resistor to reduce voltage to the pump at low engine rpm to reduce fuel pump noise. Can't remember what triggers it but when upgrading to an aftermarket pump most people bypass it and ground it directly as most aftermarket pumps don't like running at a reduced voltage.

R32 GTSt had an inline resistor that would be switched over to drop voltage and drop fuel pump speed when full bore wasn't required. Problem is a lot of aftermarket pumps simple won't spin at all at that lower voltage. It's common practice to bypass it. I did mine >15 years ago based on some SAU forums posts and have no idea how but I'm sure you'll work it out if you haven't already.

I’m pretty sure that relay that cuts the ground to the fuel pump is a capacitor and is meant to get a neg signal from the coil so the fuel pump stops after a short time period of no signal from the coil. Basically just like a LPG neutral safety switch
@ifluro
@ifluro 3 жыл бұрын
When the engine stops, the fuel pump stops. Toyota's used the air flow meter signal to control the "circuit open relay". Only other thing I can think of is a high/low pump circuit. Starts on full voltage circuit then cuts to the low voltage circuit for idle and light throttle.

Did Mark say to specify the HR31 sender unit and not to say R31? 🤣. Fuel cut off relay. I remember reading about this when doing an engine swap in my HR31. Fuel pump has a safety relay on a timer (best way I can describe it) so it cuts outs in case of an accident. Seems like that's what happening. When you first turn on the ignition the pump primes and cuts out, by bypassing it the pump will constantly stay on with ignition reds. There may be some info on this on the R31 Skyline Club. I don't think I posted anything about it in my build thread but another member (acsplit on that forum) wired my car 15 years ago and would have a good idea.

@@Bigelboe yes sounds exactly the same as my R32 setup and as mentioned above. I have and forums recommend to bypass when fitting a new / bigger fuel pump to confirm 12v getting to the pump. Nissan did do some weird shit with fuel pump control in the 80s. Generally the pump had either constant or switched 12V supply and the 0V was variably controlled to ground through a resistor bridge. Either through a FPCM (Fuel Pump Control Module) or directly by the ECU (Ausdel R31 Skyline). This ground was typically black sheath and grounded back to the unit or ECU with a white inner sheath from memory. General rule of thumb - upgrade the wiring. New 12V ignition switched supply and the 0V back to a relay that is switched by the ECU. Or better yet, fuel pump PWM speed controller.

Awesome to see this running guys! In my one I had to disconnect the plug to the black box by the blue relay or it will flood (shit injectors?) That seems to be a timer system that runs the pump for about 30 secs. There is a relay at the front right of engine bay that clicks on and off on mine that runs the pump but the ECU turns it off quite quickly unless the motor is running. A turbo would be fantastic on these for keeping up with traffic, been passed by tradie vans on the big hills more than once.

I need to check my old manuals but from memory the old Nissan ECCS systems used to run a 9 (ish) volt feed to the pump via either the ECU or a tachometric relay to keep the noise of the pump down (and heat) at idle and very low RPM. When the RPM rose the engine control system would switch it to battery power (14 odd volts) and the pump would run at full delivery. The last Nissan that i can remember that had a version of that system was the R31 Skyline with the RB30E engine.

It's probably been said but I believe the controller for the relay is looking for signals from the engine, be it oil pressure, tac signal or something else, if the controller doesn't see the signal it automatically switches off the fuel pump after a set amount of time. It could be in case of an accident, or if they don't want the pump to keep running with the key in the ignition.

Hey all, i think that rear relay is a safety device that cuts out the fuel in the event of a rear end impact. Often they are a one off use motion sensor item, so if triggered you need to replace the unit( i.e. hit up the rear or smashed in with frustration with an 8oz attitude adjuster). The unit triggers the relay and the relay cuts off the earth. I understand some states in the US have this as a mandatory RWC item.

Pretty sure that fuel relay setup is for an antiquated system for variable fuel pump speed so the pump only runs at full whack when needed and slows when at idle etc 😃👌

I have an idea that the blue relay could be an anti-theft device. There may be a hidden off-switch. Flick it when you park, and anyone who tries to drive it will have a car that conks out every 30s running time. Perfect for persuading a thief to abandon.

About the relay, its an amp safety control old pumps when fail would ground themselves thus los of amps … similar to what this new fuel pump draws
