Song written in 1964 by Simon and Garfunkel. Song is warning us about how technology is taking over our lives. We don't communicate with each other any more. Everyone is on their phones, laptops, PCs. In this video, they are using music as a metaphor for the song. It shows musicians with the instruments and people with the music. In the end the musicians get in a boat and cross the sea to reach those with the music. Sort of a coming together to communicate via music. BTW-Disturbed is a heavy metal band. Listen to Down With the Sickness to get a sense of their normal sound.
@lorries978

there was no technology back in the 1960s. This was written as a protest song about Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement of 1964, The government and establishment wasn't hearing the protesters and the backlash. Back then the motto was never trust anyone over 30. David Draiman spent about 20 years in the US and Israel training to be a cantor like his father and his grandfather, and his world-famous great-grandfather who was the head cantor of the Gerrer Hasidische bes medresh in Jerusalem. He grew up believing he was going to be a rabbi. But he kept getting kicked out of schools for unruly behavior. He didn't discover rock and metal music until later in life, and at that time his grandfather cut off all contact with him, and before his grandfather died, they did reconnect. Draiman is lapse Jewish, fully losing his faith after his girlfriend's suicide and his grandfather's death. He attended Loyola University, Los Angeles CA, where he triple-majored in Business Administration, Political Science, and Philosophy.

I grew up in the 60s. I participated in war protests. There WAS technology back then. Just not the kind we now have. Back then it was TV mostly. Nicknamed the boob tube. I know of David's background too. I'm a big fan of Disturbed. S&G even said the song was written about our failure to communicate with each other because we were, then, too involved with our neon gods, i.e. tv.

Finally, someone who gets it! I am 70 years old and heard the first one by Simon and Garfunkel. Yes, they were warning us about technology, and at the time, they were worried about Television. There were no computers, cell phones, Synthesizers, etc. Now, David Draimon of Disturbed brings us full circle to see what has finally happened. This is no "satanic" shite....It is truth...Most songs these days don't even use bands or real singers. Everything is synthesized....And the WORDS OF THE PROPHETS are written on the Subway Walls; Tenement Halls.....Tagging, Graffiti, poverty.....Everyone is Texting; not talking; not listening. And the end, when the Arc comes out of the darkness with all of the instruments....as it silently goes to the shore, where all of the people are. So, Since you seem to kind of get it, and I think you are almost there...Listen to Teresa and I, and not only listen to it, but watch and learn.....writing songs that voices never sang, no one dared. This IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE VIDEO AND VOICE OF OUR TIME....AND I MEAN OF ALL TIME!!! Please help more people to WAKE UP....HE IS TRYING TO LET US KNOW....where we've ended up and gone to and are going.... Amazing....

@@lorries978 it was originally written about television, and the concern that we would lose ourselves (and our social interactions) to technology, it had nothing to do with the Vietnam war. The original was written as a warning; this cover was made in anger that we didn't heed the original warning.

This a cover of a 60s Simon and Garfunkel song. The original was in essence saying "please listen to our warning" while this one is more "why the hell didn't you listen to us?!" For a taste of what Disturbed usually sounds like check out Down With the Sickness.

I believe that David’s version of this Simon and Garfunkel cover song makes you focus more on the words and lyrics. Plus add his heavy metal (and classical training) just pushes the emotional element to the forefront of the song. It’s really the grit and distortion that makes goosebumps appear. With all these devises designed to making it easier to communicate with each other, we’re not communicating with each other (your neighbors, people at the grocery story, and even just the people around you in your every day to day activities). It’s all about COMMUNICATION. Because right now we are all SILENT because we have our heads in our iPads and Phones. They got it right back in the 1960’s but it can be equally applied to today’s environment. Especially towards this CANCEL CULTURE. “And no one dares, disturb the sound of silence.”

Great reaction! If you enjoyed the studio version, I would very much like to hear your reaction to their live performance on Conan. Despite being ill that day, David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Paul Simon reached out to the group after the performance to congratulate them as he posted it on his social media, calling it the best cover of any of his songs ever. Conan celebrated the performance last year as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views. Keep up the great work!

I agree about doing the Conan reaction. To me my personal opinion the Original video tells the story of it and Conan is about the instruments a and his vocals. Both are just incredible and gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes every single time I watch it. I also love watching the reactions that have never heard his voice and the power behind it.And him being sick on the Conan and still sounds amazing....WOW! I also love Hold on to Memories from them and would love to see a reaction to that.

My interpretation of this song revised: This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds (awakened Ones) telling those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle way, but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence. They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time, it really pissed them off. "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead remained in the sound of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.......just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent . Loved your reaction and your take on that performance Cane Boyz. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Enough", "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too, which are a bit "heavier".....LOLOL....

This one has a lot to take in on first listening. The lyrics are DEEP. The voice is one of a kind. The video is excellent and the music supports it all. Lyrics were written back in the mid 1960s by Paul Simon of the group Simon and Garfunkel. Disturbed covered this song, like 40 years later, reinterpreting it musically and vocally in banger fashion. Lyrics are basically about the inability of society to communicate and for those in power to listen to we the flock. That sentiment fit the turbulent 60s (anti-war, civil rights, etc) but still apply and probably will always apply as long as people congregate and form societies.

Your's is one of the best reactions I've seen in the past five days since I've been watching 👀 and listening to the many channels on KZfaq. The tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released this classic song of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today, actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing the many channels and each of their reactions and 😢 almost every time. It's funny that more males have gotten teary-eyed than females, just an observation. Diane Davis ❤❤❤

Not sure if anyone said so. But Paul Simon penned this song and sang it 3/4 months after the assasination of JFK. His version when he sings it with Art Garfunkel is essentially the warning of people losing touch with human contact due to new technologies coming out. At this time it was the tv. David Draiman's version is the rage of no one following thru. That so much more new technology has come out and people no longer verbally communicating. Texting has taken over this world. David in a highly trained Hazzan. Born and raised in a traditional Jewish family. He was always in the lead and teaching. Spent time in Israel teaching over there as well. He was actually running a medical building as an administrator making good money when he auditioned for this spot and got it. He writes the songs he sings and Donnegan pens the music. I love his voice! If you have not listened to their regular songs try it. Not your typical heavy metal songs! His songs he writes are more of a ballad than heavy. They tell a story unlike your typical heavy metal songs. I have learned to shut the music out and listen to the words. He is an amazing man

Musicians on one side, the other song writers. Come together at the end. The neon god when it was written was TV.

Paul Simon was the original singer and songwriter back in the 60s he has their cover of this song on his own playlist that is something that doesn't happen a lot on a cover for the original singer Lowe's how the cover was done another song that you would probably Life by Disturbed maybe it was the first one I've ever heard by them it was called Down With The Sickness the long version explains the whole thing what he's talkin about it has a powerful message in it and yes you're correct it's about not communicating you know not emotionally connecting or anyting kind of great How It Was Written in the 60s and we are now living in the time of the message of that song

Google what the meaning of the song from Simon & Garfunkel in 1964 and why the Conan live airing of David Draimond's version is the absolute best interpretation for this day and age
