You’re saying my face doesn’t need to be in a KZfaq video and I’m sitting here thinking… my hands are ugly, too. 😂

Thanks for another great video, Kara! I like the message in this one a lot and it’s something my husband and I (both freelance for 15 years now) embrace by running multiple small businesses. It’s allowed us to weather the unexpected complications that inevitably pop up if you stick with a business long enough. Great and true point about many small incomes adding up to a liveable whole, too; takes the pressure off any given effort. I really appreciate your realistic advice regarding only taking on what you can manage and caregivers may need to scale back for a while. Too often the advice on KZfaq seems to just expect you to do it all.

This year more than ever I discovered how important it is to diversify and add to income streams. I have taken on work in completely unrelated areas to my business. The change of scenery keeps me on my toes and I know that if one income stream drops there's always something else picking up the slack. Business is quite right now, so I have the time to focus on other income streams. Other income streams takes the stress out of being more financially secure and is one less thing to worry about. Excess money goes into a rainy day fund and that also helps to fund quieter times which is also really good for destressing the money situation. Relying on Etsy only is probably one of the most risky things you can do. You have no control over it.

KZfaq is great for just product highlights and showing your process. I’ve done videos where I’m not really in them or only halfway in the video.

I have my own website and it is much harder to get a customer to buy from it as opposed to Etsy. Products are the same, check out is clear and easy. I think it’s a trust issue.

This is something I worry about. How do you clear the hurdle? Do you have items that are only available on your website? Like limited edition items or something?

What is your take on Etsy decreasing the staffing by 11%? Seems crazy to me. More like they need to increase it to help the sellers.
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 7 ай бұрын
The way that Etsy has always judged these things is that if they increase work in one area and it doesn't increase ales, it's not successful. They apparently took a hard look at the things they're doing and decided that having more people work on them isn't increasing sales the way they thought it would, so they're getting rid of projects and staff. I don't think that's a bad thing. If you put money into something and it doesn't pay off, you shouldn't keep doing that thing.

During economic down turns and strictly from a numbers point of view the quickest and easiest way for businesses to improve their bottom line and give an illustration of a "healthier" financial position, is to DECREASE their LABOR EXPENSE, which means firing people. 😢😢

Thank you for saying that if my mental capacity has a hard time balancing plates (Etsy plus website plus ???), then skip the website for now. I do have a mailing list but i dont bug them because they all get the notifications from Etsy when i add product. And i promised that i wouldn't send emails. Im not a blogger.

A friend asked for a referral to a shop to buy a gift. He had already given her something from mine. I gave him the name of a shop I enjoy. He typed in the name in Etsy search, not there. I tried it too. Gave me all sorts of other shops, often having nothing to do with her niche. I can only find her by going to the shops I have favorited. So annoying. -Elizabeth

I've done my etsy through the first 12 years of having kids. I have 3 children ages 12, 10, and 5, who are homeschooled. I don't make a lot of sales. I want to develop patterns. I do get asked for patterns. There's no point advertising until after I have patterns or can produce more ready to ship items. I have a domain that I have no idea how to develop.

It takes time, and if you're homeschooling you'll need to work on it when you can. Don't beat yourself up too much, your kids are more important.

Do you consider Mosaic "getting your own website?"
@KaraBuntin

Yes, it's a separate website, but at the same time it's connected to your Goimagine shop, so you can't sell anything on it.

@KaraBuntin

You might not be able to. If Etsy has closed it and you can’t log in you’ll have to contact them to see if there’s any way to get back in or if you’ve been locked out for good.
