I have noticed an explosion of craft fair events this year compared to last year! You are right on with how this was how we marketed in 1999. I made way more money at in-person shows than I will ever make on Etsy. I am learning new crafting skills and preparing myself for getting back out there next year. Thanks so much for what you do and always leading us in the right direction!

Don't ever stop "rambling" Kara! Everything you talk about is real, honest and leads to me thinking how I can apply some of these things to my shops. It's not always easy, especially opening up ourselves on videos. The thought is intimidating to me, but I'm willing to at least give it a try!

People who comment like that are the ones who probably need to hear what I'm saying, but they won't listen so that's fine. I can't get too concerned about it, it was just interesting because from my stats it's obvious to me why KZfaq showed them the video.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense. Thank you. For years we have had it good by being able to list online and the sales would roll in. Now the place is oversaturated and with many more unscrupulous sellers. The other thing that in person sales helps with is that people know where their items are 'shipping' from (lots of online shops now claim their item is shipping from within the US for example when really it is coming from another country) - they can have it instantly and don't have to worry about door step thefts or having to open cases and get refunds. There are many reasons why buyers are preferring to go back to the mall or markets.

As always, spot on! Good for you for calling out the naysayers....let them go harass someone else. The reason I quit selling die cuts online is because there was so much competition, cheap competition. I would spend hours working on orders only to turn around and see a competitor list it for $4.50. I wasn't making anything. I switched products. Much, much happier now! Keep the great advice coming! Hi Kara! I know I haven’t commented in a while, I’ve been quite busy with my shop and I have a KZfaq channel now (not on this profile), but I wanted to jump back in again and I’m happy you’re still doing this podcast. Wine moms are just proud alcoholics and use their children as an excuse to day drink. I saw these two women on shark tank recently that sell these plastic toddler cup things for wine moms… they make a killing doing it and it’s like do you really need to be drinking at a picnic or your kids sporting event? Does your life suck that much you can’t be sober? They literally were like we got the idea because we couldn’t take wine with us everywhere!! And we would go get drunk after work!! To me, it’s not cute its a low key sign for an addiction or other mental health issue that needs to be addressed. Nothing sounds worse than to be around someone who needs to be drinking constantly and complaining about their spouse or children. Also, wine isn’t even really that good?? But topic aside, it’s true if it’s not a bot or ai, it’s a manufacturer who can spend thousands to stick ads everywhere that uses cheap or forced labor to make junk we don’t need. It’s why I’ve been slowly building up other revenue streams and am going to try to get into my first convention in artists alley next year! Right now, I’m focusing on building an audience and my portfolio and more products. I’m also taking the economy into account, a lot of people don’t have money to spend on stuff we make either. I haven’t been able to do much, didn’t take a real vacation this year, cut back a ton on what we buy for food and my partner and I are planning to do a gift free Christmas this year. I think it’s not just oversaturated markets, but globally people are struggling to afford basic needs like housing or food, so we’re competing with the economy too.

Another great video! I'm happy I'm not the only one thinking it's time to go back to what you call 1999 marketing. I believe many people are fed up with BS marketing and products, and it worked for a while, but now that money is tight for many, it's time to focus on skills, creativity, connection, and really showing what makes us different. I am in the jewelry biz, and telling people "Buy from me because I'm not in a sweatshop" isn't enough: I have to challenge myself and do better. But communication isn't easy for me (I'm naturally more living like a goblin in the shadow, so I struggle to make myself the brand 😅). I fell in love with chainmail last year and reorganized my workspace as I want to do videos and lives to share the process (maybe even tutorials, I could offer kits for patient crafters). I hope it will create this sense of connection as I can't sell IRL. Please wish me luck 😁

I often wonder if they’re bots or even worse paid trolls overseas who attack channels like this. There was a whole 60 minutes on how in China and now recently Russia college students are targeted into making easy money by making fake accounts and stirring up drama or political controversy online. It’s like you can’t even tell what’s real anymore because people are stupid, but you never know the intention behind a bad comment. Based on what she said, I’m thinking it could be Etsy gurus/scammers or something pissed off she’s been telling the truth. It’s not that hard to make an alt account or get a bot account.

I started out doing in-person markets before setting up an Etsy shop, and I still love doing them. I have a short list of ones that I do well at, I'll try new ones to see if they're a good fit. The one thing I haven't tried, and have always wondered if it would be a good fit, is getting into a retail location. There's a local crafter's association that has storefronts in a couple malls around the city and I've never worked up the nerve to investigate. Do you have any videos, tips, or advice on brick and mortar shops, and maybe what to look out for before signing anything?
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 8 ай бұрын
I would check with the other people who sell in that location to find out what their experience is. I don't sell anything in brick and mortar shops so I wouldn't be very helpful, but I would investigate about how they handle theft, returns, damage, etc.

I work full time and do my business in the evenings and weekends. Been thinking about a KZfaq channel new (insert business here) and see what happens. And video my progress. Still playing with it in my mind. Haven't seen in my " let's see what you tube shows me in my feed videos" so might be viable. Just... Shy... Though I did do my first FB live at a vendor event, think online craft show, and got positive feedback... I dunno...

Yeah, that sucks. But that happens everywhere, I had people copy my cakes and steal my cake photos and website info before Etsy even existed.

I've had people buy my collars and then I find they are selling the same design so they buy mine take it apart to see how I've made them then selling theirs with the same design 🤦‍♀️

I would love to hear any advice you have on getting product into local shops. I am fairly new to selling and have no clue how to approach this.

Local sales are about building relationships with people. You need to approach the shop owner to see if they're taking new merchandise and how they handle it. I personally wouldn't do consignment, only wholesale, but that's up to you.

You weren't kidding about KZfaq thinking this video's audience is the "get rich quick" audience. Every single ad was some sort of get rich quick hussle, from renting other peoples properties on air bnb to creating books on amazon to using digital assets. Unfortunately I ended up listening to far more than I wanted because I was forging and could not stop to skip the ads! 😂 It just seems like it all just grifters out there. 😑

I've noticed that about the ads, too. I'll be talking about ignoring the tools that claim to tell you about your competition on Etsy, and the next thing that comes up is an ad for one of them. I get a little satisfaction from knowing that they paid for me to see it when I'll never buy the tool since they're not accurate.

Hi Kara, I recently added DIY craft products to my shop and along with orders I send a step-by-step guide with photos of the entire process of me doing the embroidery, but I know it would be great to have a KZfaq channel where the customer could see the process, for beginners the videos are best. My problem is that my clients are mostly from the USA, and I don't speak English well enough to make videos. In your opinion as a consumer, would you prefer to watch a video with just background music, without anyone speaking, or a video in my native language with subtitles?
@KaraBuntin
@KaraBuntin 8 ай бұрын
Probably music, but with text on the video when something needs to be explained. BUT...You can also get someone to do the voiceover for you as another option.

Hi....just as a person who watches a Lot of tutorial videos that just have background music ( the creator is also not confident English). I really appreciate the learning experience and as long as the instructions are clear and not rushed it works 😊

The "get rich, quick" videos about Etsy are annoying. The basic advice is, go find a niche and then make/sell a product for that niche. You have no idea what to make or what to sell, you just want to make money. It's "cart before the horse" thinking. I love your thinking about getting back to the in-person experience. Online shopping isn't going anywhere, at least not anytime soon, but now that we're 20 years into it (and the pandemic probably exacerbated it), people are wanting that in-person experience again. It will be the astute among us that learns to take advantage of that trend as an online shop owner. If we're lucky, it will cull the herd of copy-cats and resellers on marketplaces like Etsy.

also a funny thing on prints on Etsy. I was looking into doing some, my own, not uhh fake we will say and looked around. Clicked on one beautiful one to get an idea pricing, etc, and checked the shop ... That was the ONLY art print, the rest was photos which I would call pornography. I was shocked. Is this what Etsy has become??

It's no big deal, they obviously haven't watched the videos before their fat fish stick fingers start typing comments, so you can't take them too seriously.
