DIY: why spent so much money for a shop to replace your A/C clutch plate, pulley and coil, when you can do it yourself.
In the video, we are working on a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum AWD (4th Gen).
Issue: Either a bad compressor or clutch plate or electro magnetic coil.
We have determined it was the coil, when the car is on, you do not hear a click coming from the clutch, means coil and clutch not engaged.
Tested coil, it had no power. But it’s easier just to replace complete clutch and coil as opposed to just coil.
In the video, we’ll show how we fix that issue.
Tools needed:
Pry bar
10mm socket/ ratchet
Phillips head screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Impact gun (optional)
Volt meter
Mallet/ hammer
O-ring pliers
Brake cleaner
Clutch and coil kit:

Just got finished with this procedure on my Pathfinder. I ran into a few snags, but it turned out well. If you're in a road salt area, inspect the metal coolant tube which connects with the base of the oil filter. Mine was so rusted, it started spraying out coolant when I accidentally nicked it with the new clutch assembly. Was able to get a new pipe from Nissan. It was more expensive than the clutch kit and serpentine belt combined. Obviously had to drain the coolant, and it added considerable time to the repair. All good now though. Thanks for posting this video!

Thanks for the guidance! Replaced mine and I have AC again. FYI-I used the 3 original shims and the 2 they sent me with the kit. It still wasn't enough space...I had to go to our local Ace Hardware and purchase a few more shims (they're metric). Can't thank you enough. I really appreciate that you made this video. You're the man!

Gap between clutch disc and pulley is .010-.020in checked with a feeler gauge. After installation, be sure to tighten but don't over tighten, the bolt that holds the clutch to the compressor shaft. After final installation a "break in operation" is required as per the factory service manual. Break-In Operation- Engage and disengage the clutch about 30 times. This operation tightens the bolt that holds the clutch in place. This is why the bolt is not hyper-tightened. -Later

I imagine that the engine has to be running during the break-in procedure. Otherwise, I can't see how the bolt can tighten itself. And, yes, the gap is important. If it's too small, you won't hear a distinct click when you test the clutch in diagnostic mode. Also, it will tend to semi-engage if not enough gap. At least .010" with a flat feeler gauge.

.010 is too close Nissan Calsonic recommend . 020". And all my ac clutches are setup at .020 " If you set clearance too tight, clutch shoe will drag & get VERY HOT until it scores then the smooth surface is ruined. Not Good. I am retired Calsonic development/ test engr Please don't run airgap at . 010!! ***020 is almost always ideal.... 👍

Clutch shoe & compressor shaft are both Splined.!! The 10mm hex bolt only needs 8ft/ lbs max or a decent snug . It cannot tighten itself . The breaking procedure is to BREAK IN THE MACHINED SURFACES OF THE CLUTCH FACES!!! ** Procedure has nothing to do with the small 6x 1.0mm bolt. To burnish clutch, try 20-30 on/ off applies of clutch by turning AC ON for just a ~5 seconds then turn off ac. Repeat......use fast idle over 1500rpm. You are burnishing the two clutch surfaces to each other, to improve the "torque holding grip" of the clutch assembly.

thank you for this video! I need to run a couple of tests to see if the coil works. My AC quit blowing cold air yesterday. I did notice the clutch engaging but then it would disengage and compressor would stop working. I had also noticed that when decelerating during driving, cool air would stop and feel a tad warm and humid even. Testing coil will be my first test. I'd hate to replace entire compressor for a bad coil.

You could do a IPDM self-diagnosing test and that would show you if the clutch would engage or not. Here is how you go about it (for a pathfinder with a push-button start): 1) push the engine Start button 5 times (one per second) 2) push the door sensor switch 5 times (one per second) 3) push the engine Start button 3 times (one per second) This will start a series of self-tests: wind-shield wiping head lights clutch AC fans If your clutch is activated as part of this test, you can tell it is ok and your issues are elsewhere.

Yes sir, you’re correct, but I didn’t think about it at the time, I did a visual on it, and notice that it’s not engaging, so I also did a multimeter test to verify it, thanks for the tip, I will considered it next time.

Do you do the self diagnostic test with the engine running, or do you just push the button without stepping on the brake?
@SokhomGarage
@SokhomGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I did not, I did a visual inspection, and notice that it was not engaging, I went off that assumption.

I put all of the shims in and it’s still not cycling off. How dangerous could this be to the system? Do I just go find more shims?
@SokhomGarage
@SokhomGarage 10 ай бұрын
Well, in the long run, you could burn out your compressor because you can’t turn it off, but you need proper spacing between the clutch and pulley itself, .010 - .020 spacing, in order to get that, you need a feeler gauge, but since you added too many shims, you can just simply take some shim off.

Just took my coil and clutch out. My bearing was shot making a terrible noise and tested my coil it was too. If I replace that think it would fix my problem with out having to change the whole compressor?

Was this cheaper/easier than just replacing the entire compressor? I'm about to replace my ac compressor in my 2015 Nissan pathfinder. Is it hard to reach the other side of the compressor where the cable and hoses go in to remove it? Thanks!
@SokhomGarage
@SokhomGarage 3 жыл бұрын
This was the cheapest and easiest rout. You can start by testing your coil, if it doesn’t give you any reading, then it’s bad, from my experience, compressors don’t usually go bad. But if you do replace it, the bolt in the back is a pain to get to, you’ll also need PAG oil.
@Still-Learning

Coil, pulley, clutch set on AMZN about $50 plus some sweat equity. Compressor replacement by shop...$1500+/-. You can determine the value between the two responses.

Your question is two years old, but if you haven't yet, as the OP stated, compressors rarely fail. It seems like this clutch coil is a common failure item. Was in my case.

My Pathfinder's AC just quit recently on a short trip. I just checked the fuse, and it looks good. Just checked out your video. Thanks for posting it. Doesn't look terribly difficult, and your saying compressors rarely go bad is encouraging! Is there a way to test the resistance of the coil without any disassembly, as a diagnostic step?
@SokhomGarage
@SokhomGarage 3 жыл бұрын
You can, it’s just in a really tight spot, but it can be tested while on the engine.

@@SokhomGarage Ok. I'm thinking maybe where the relay is would be easier? If you pull the relay, you should be able to test the coil in the relay socket, no? Is the relay in an easier spot to reach? Also, if the clutch does not engage, could it be lack of pressure in the system? Isn't there a pressure switch which keeps the compressor clutch from engaging if the refrigerant is lost? Thanks in advance.
@SokhomGarage
@SokhomGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don’t have the car with me to give you an answer on the relay, it was a friends car, but I did not test the relay. If the clutch does not engage, it’s not because of the pressure in the system, pressure in the system goes to the compressor itself. The clutch is the first plate you would see, there is a coil behind the clutch plate, the coil itself is magnetized( the coil is what you would need to test to make sure it’s working, when the coil is turn on it pulls the clutch plate in, thus turning the compressor) the clutch plate, you would need to make sure it has the spacing for the coil to engage it. The pressure switch are in the engine bay, they are the high and low point in the system, it’s mark with H and L. And no, this would not cause the clutch to engage/ disengage.

@@JoyLong No. I havent. Just started investigating the problem. A loss of refrigerant would also keep the compressor from engaging, right?
