After I gained experience building 3 SIMMs, my construction times started to improve, yielding an average of 30 minutes per SIMM for the final 5 SIMMs. That includes time to continuity-check pin pairs on both RAM chips, but doesn't include alchohol cleaning time.

First of all, congratulations on your wife's recovery! And thank you for making the detailed video, Made with a different perspective from you, but it's amazing! But your grip strength is look weak, so you should break a KitKat candy bar every day lol For the constant confusion over our branding issues, but me, Drake and Stephen Arsenault love the brand name and have no plans to change it. Sorry for the troublesome answer each time. For the Japanese customers: Our store operates on WIX, which does not allow us to charge our customers currency regions(that like in USD to JPY). Therefore, since many of our customers are in the US, we charge in USD. And for Japan, we make up for it with listings on Yahoo Auctions!. Since the JPY and USD exchange rates differ depending on the time of the Yahoo listing, it is impossible to make the price uniform. And there is a difference because there is a Yahoo auction successful bid fee 8.8%. However, the shipping fee is cheap when shipping to Japan. From the above, plz understand that we can't provide uniform service. Vintage Macintosh customers always get the impression that it's very fair and friendly (like us) when the developer sells directly. When doing the testing before removing the chips, I'd suggest covering the RAM with a blanket or something... let it get good and hot. Very detailed video - and shows a great way to try out some surface mount soldering!

And right when the world needed him, he returned. Welcome back, JDW. Hope everybody's safe, well, and on the mend. As a suggestion you might want to pass onto Kay Koba: you could probably design/3D print something you can clamp onto the edge of a table, insert the SIMM into with just enough clearance, and *bend* the board so it breaks along the scoring. It's definitely not an easy job doing it by hand, but a 3D printed part would make all the difference.

Thank you for your kind words. As to the breaking apart of the PCBs in the kit, I suppose it could be said that if it was easier, then Luke Skywalker wouldn't have made a brief cameo in my video! :-) Seriously, your tip is sound. Putting the PCB onto a flat tap with a big and heavy book on top to secure it, then using the leverage to break off the SIMMs one by one may have been a better way. Of course, you would really need to take great care to ensure the split line is truly on the table edge and is perfectly straight. You wouldn't want to crack the PCBs by accident. And naturally, I don't recommend using the X-acto knife either because some people might slip and splice multiple traces across the PCB! It's too bad the PCB maker doesn't make the cut groove DEEPER! That would be the ideal solution!

Thanks, Luke. If you have a hot air station to remove the chips from our donor SIMMs, a vice, tweezers, flux, and a good chisel tip like mine shown in the video, you're good to go. Be sure to have some sandpaper too because 3 edges of edge SIMM are a bit rough if you don't sand them a bit. I recommend sanding at the very beginning before you solder chips. Then make sure you do a thorough 99% or 100% IPA clean at the end. I'd love to hear a reply back when your finished. No doubt you'll be as overjoyed as I was when you see your Mac boot just fine with all that handcrafted RAM!

But happy to report I have created my first couple of 4MB simms - just tested them in a Mac Classic II and very excited to report they are working well! Thanks for your awesome instructions and video, I was watching it again today as I worked on them. It was super helpful! Like you I also went through a few soldering iron tips until I found the one that worked best for me. Thanks again! 😊

I'm glad your wife is doing better. Nice video on a neat product. I also find the beveled tips more useful than pencil tips. Miniwave tips are great for drag soldering and SMD/TH work in general. Lots of solder capacity and heat transfer.

I'm absolutely elated for you James, what a great outcome for your wife! You must be so relieved and excited for the future. These 4mb modules will be of great value to those with Classic II, LC, LCII etc. however I cannot see the value proposition for those with Quadra 9xx, SE/30 etc. when 16MB SIMM's are so readily available.

Thank you for your kind words. The value proposition is cost. Consider this EBAY auction: www.ebay.com/itm/174703671466 $125 for 8 sticks of 16MB 30-pin SIMMs -- enough for both banks in an SE/30. But for me in Japan, I must pay yet another $25 for shipping! US$150 total -- yikes! And to top it off, as I mentioned in my video, you don't need 128MB or even 64 for an SE/30. Plus, for those who care, you don't get LEDs on the SIMMs when you by those 16MB SIMMs. (Younger folks enjoy the light-up effects.) The total cost for 2 Kay Koba PCB kits and 2 Capacitor/Resistor/LED kits plus the required shipping to the US, Canada, Australia & New Zealand is only $27. Shipping would be a tad less for me in Japan because Kay is in Japan. And because the kit is best for people who already have spare 16MB 72pin SIMMs or 168pin DIMMs, assuming you already have a soldering iron, that $27 is your total cost outlay. Also, 8 sticks of 4MB yields the ideal memory for an SE/30 -- 32MB. You really don't need more than that in a B&W compact. So the joy and merit to this kid really does come down to cost. But then when you add the joy of doing a project, you can get a bit more value from the deal. Overall, I think it's really great.

2 tips I would give you : since you have a hot air station use smd paste, it has flux and tin in a syringe. Hit it with heat and done. If you use sand paper do it at an angle, it prevents the different layers of the pcb from shorting each other

I did not use SMD Paste because I didn't want my job to turn out to be like the following, which is a a video on what NOT to do 🙂: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rp6ZfKV21Nqpm2g.html I also know other people who have used paste and ended up with lackluster results. Indeed, I have received finished products which were build using soldering paste and I found it did not work until I took my soldering iron and leaded solder and reflowed the IC pins, thereby proving intermittently connections existed. So while some people are probably good at using that paste, I have not seen evidence it is the majority of people. I myself have most experience with a regular soldering iron and leaded solder, so I went with that, and the end result was wonderful -- not a single intermittent connection anywhere, as you can see from the closeup shots of the RAM chips on my PCB. As to your Sanding suggestion, I'm not sure about doing it "at an angle" because by having sanded it lightly on a flat surface (i.e., not at an angle) exactly as I show in the video, there was no harm whatsoever done to any traces, even though traces are quite close to the board edge. Indeed, I would say there is perhaps more danger in me advising people to sand it "at an angle" because some people may use an extreme angle and then slip during the sanding process, only to have the sand paper brush up against the front or back of the SIMM, rather than the very edge. So my sanding advice is perhaps the safest approach for most people. Even so, when in doubt, or for people with shaky hands, no sanding should be done at all.

My SE/30 could definitely do with a RAM boost and this looks like a fun way to achieve that! I love Kay’s projects and have quite a few here. James I bit the bullet and had the kit delivered to me in Sydney. I completed it over the weekend and was able to (after minimal rework) get an additional 16MB in my SE/30. Very cool indeed. I didn’t have any of the specific RAM Kay mentioned so took an educated guess which turned out to be correct (first time for everything!). All said and done I’m super happy with the outcome.

Fascinating to hear that musical keyboards like that use RAM SIMMs! I can only tell you that you need to find out if your keyboard requires 30-pin SIMMs with or without a Parity chip. If it doesn't need Parity (most Macs don't), then you will do the build exactly as shown in my video, with only 2 chips per SIMM PCB. But if you need Parity RAM, then you would need to do a 3-chip per PCB build. The "hoof" or "chisel" or "slanted" tip I used in the end was the smallest tip available for my particular soldering station handle size (which is L). But I would not consider it small. As you can see in my video, it is large enough to touch 2 of the IC pads at the same time. It's almost too large, but with a stead hand it works for pin-by-pin soldering.

Thank you! The SE is limited to 4MB of RAM but you cannot simply add a single SIMM to its motherboard. For that reason, the SE is incompatible with 4MB SIMMs. If you stop my video at 1:19 you will see all the compatible Macs shown in yellow text. As you can see, that also excludes the II, Iix and IIfx. I've put a link to II & IIx 30-pin PAL RAM in the text description. The IIfx doesn't use 30pin SIMMs.

I ordered couple sets of this kit. I ran into an issue that I determined was the width of the Simm PCB. When booting the SE/30, I got very unpredictable results. Sometimes it would boot and other times It would just give a sad Mac. While troubleshooting, I noticed that the Simms had a little bit of play in the sockets. Since the sockets were the kind with plastic clips in my SE/30 I decided to replace them with sockets that had metal clips. Now the Simms PCBs that were included in the kit fit snuggly in the new sockets. Problem solved. Just wanted to give a heads up to anybody else who might run into a similar issue. if you run into an issue, it may not be bad memory modules or improper soldering techniques. It very well could be the sockets on your logic board.

Correct, and such is true of some ROM SIMMs as well, when used in the SE/30, which is really only perfectly resolved when you swap out the ROM SIMM socket for one with metal sockets. Also, when using the DIY RAM in other Macs like the IIci, there are no issues with the thinness of the RAM PCBs because those other Macs were intelligently designed by Apple with proper RAM sockets. Apple really dropped the ball with the SE/30 by going cheap on the sockets, which is really a shocking shame since the SE/30 was a very pricey Mac back in the day. Arguably, Apple should have used tantalum capacitors on that pricey SE/30 motherboard too, but as we know, they didn't, and know vintage Mac enthusiasts need to contend with all manner of trouble from leaky electrolytic SMD capacitors. Anyway, I am glad you were able to find a good resolution to the PCB thinness issue in the end. Best wishes!

Perhaps Bruce is a bit more trusting or dexterous when he uses The Force than myself. 🙂 With regard to the RED "Analog Board" for the SE and SE/30 that is sold by Kay, I have other videos I need to do before I consider that project. He has a lot of great stuff in his store, and I've just not been able to do a build video on it all. But most of the time, the Analog Board PCB doesn't go bad. In fact, most of the time it doesn't even suffer from leaky caps. He mainly released the Analog Board for reasons of looks. Because if you replace your motherboard with a RED Bolle board and/or have a MacEffects Clear Case, then "looks matter," and most people want something colorful to show off -- hence the replacement Analog Board PCB kit he sells. Having matching color PCBs tends to look better than a mix-mash of green PCBs with something else.

I think you deleted your second post about "the yellow book" just as I was typing the following comment, so here it is... Actually, that is not correct. I've been meaning to do a video on that book, but it wasn't what I referred to. If you watch that part of my video again, you will see I make mention of the cameo thing as being able to test and diagnose vintage Macs, which of course that Yellow Book cannot do. But I will give you a hint... The color surrounding the small device is blue, and it is on my desk at home where you saw the Yellow Book. 🙂

I did guess the right shot which had the cameo, it was unusually different from your other backgrounds, which are Spartan and devoid of distracting objects or decorations. All of a sudden: curtains? Correct! Bob Hope passed away in 2003 at the age of 100, so a lot of younger people may not even know who he is. I was born in 1971 and grew up knowing about him. @@JDW- Aha, I recognised his face but I couldn’t think of the name. Then again, I was thinking of people related to vintage computers and Hope just didn’t come to my mind. I Hope, no pun intended, to watch more films including him as I watched ‘Road to Zanzibar’ a few months ago and he was great in that, along with Bing Crosby. He died the year I was born so I would probably fit in that younger category (for better or for worse)😂

And that’s why I always have the PCB manufacturer separate the boards from the panel for me… if they break the board they’ll just run it again; if I break it I’ll be out however much $$$ for the boards plus shipping plus the two weeks time to get it back from China…

Do you have to pay them extra to break the boards apart. I'm guessing you do, and that's probably why Kay Koba didn't order them that way -- to keep the cost of the kit as low as possible.

@@JDW- No, it’s actually the default when I’m ordering from JLC PCB; I believe that it’s that way also at PCBWay. To get panels with V-scored or mouse-bite separation lines you have to select that when placing the order.

Thank you for your comment! As a born-again Christian for over 40 years and as someone who was blessed with the opportunity to teach Sunday School for over two decades, I am absolutely not interested in advertising Satan or defending symbols pertaining to genuine Satanism. I actually get shivers when I spot 666 out in the wild. However, as a contemplative person and realist, I am aware the creator is a member of a tiny boys club that simply chose an eye popping club name for the sake of shock value. At least one of the club members is a fan of heavy metal artwork and symbolism. That's certainly not for everyone, but I can say these gentlemen are not Satan worshippers. I don't believe any of them to be Christians, and as such, they probably don't even believe Satan exists. That doesn't justify the symbolism, but it does explain the thinking of the people who put it on some of their work. There's a rather large difference between believing Satan exists and worshipping him as a god, versus not believing Satan exists and creating art for amusement and/or shock value. Because of that, the SMC branding issue is a "food sacrificed to idols" matter for Christians who are legitimately concerned about it. Not every Christian in Paul's day could eat that sacrificial meat with a clear conscience because technically it had been sacrificed to demons, seeing that idols are nothing. But some believers could eat it without issue despite how it was sacrificed. And those who could eat it were not sinning when they ate it because their conscience was clear. They exercised their faith in a different, yet Biblically sanctioned way. My detailed explanation here may not entirely resolve your negative feelings about the SMC branding, but maybe it will help explain it a bit. If you are able to see past and otherwise ignore the symbols and instead ponder the tech, which I can't help but do as an EE, it really does make for a great kit worthy of consideration. And that's not the only item of interest in Kay Koba's store, which is why I like his tech so much. Modern tech makes toying with vintage Macs more fun. @@JDW- thank you for your reply. My negative feelings about the branding are consistent with other forms of evil. Intentional or not (in their "satanic" usage), I do my best to abstain from the appearance of evil. The product is amazing, but I wouldn't want to introduce anything with that label into my house. I appreciate the work you do and I enjoy all of your content.

@@reactionpoolxrx6719 Thank you for your follow-up comment. You would have been one, mostly likely, who would have not eaten any meat that had been sacrificed to idols back in Paul's day. I appreciate and understand your feelings, especially if you have been faced with a lot of evil in your life. Goodness knows my own family was hit with that in 2022 with my wife's cancer. Another consideration is that even if you yourself are okay with overlooking certain text or symbols, it doesn't mean fellow Christians would appreciate seeing it if you had them over to your house for a visit. Our testimony is important. That's why it would be wrong for a missionary to Israel to eat bacon for breakfast in front of potential converts or even Jewish Christians. A prayerful study of I Cor. chapter 8 is an important for any Christian because we are faced with these matters in life, time and time again. But that talk really is beyond the scope of my video, so I won't expand on it further. In the video, I am laser focused on the underlying tech and the benefits it offers to vintage Macs.

The focus on my video, of course, was the underlying tech and not the branding. The members of that club created a brand name for the sake of shock value, not something religious. And truly, I don’t think there’s any other name that would generate as many WTF responses as that particular one. That does not mean I endorse the name. It merely means that I understand the thinking of the people behind it. But it is not a brand name I myself would have chosen, obviously. For a more detailed understanding of my thinking on the matter, please see the comment by reactionpoolxrx6719, and then expand the replies to see what I wrote to him there.
