OMG, my original chicken coop design has same poop tray and two tier roost bar exactly like you have. After um-teen design iterations, I ended up doing the deep liter method. I think landed on the same video you mentioned to spark my interest to build a coop when I was searching for ideas. LOL. You did a wonderful job.

Great build! This is the style I've been eyeing for a while now. I like the simplicity of the lean-to roof, the covered egg access and the droppings clean out methodology. I also really want to build a coop that could be easily moved. Just setting it on leveled pavers, perhaps just putting down a couple tap-con screws into the pavers to keep the wind from lifting it, and just lag bolting the run to the coop for easy separation would make this very easy to move to a new location on the property using a utility trailer.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
While moving is great, the one problem I have with that is making sure your chickens are secure. I'm going to extend the hardware cloth for my walls 2 feet deep on all sides (yeah, costly). If you move the coop, how do you make sure animals can't dig through the bottom to get to it?
@jayhemfindsyou
@jayhemfindsyou Жыл бұрын
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 If you look at the other builds, a lot of people don't worry about burying the hardware cloth, instead they put large rocks (6-12" diameter rocks) lining the hardware cloth to ground contact around the entire coop/run and the animals that tend to dig under like racoons, possums and foxes can't dig with the large rocks in the way. I think it looks great that way too.

@surfer2016
@surfer2016 Жыл бұрын
I copied the design and made my own measurements.... Realistically building things like this doesn't require the cabinet or furniture making mentality.... 1/16" or even an 1/8" off is something that would get lost in the soup or paint, liquid trim etc..... But trust me those finish guys, furniture, cabinet people have a passion for measuring to the 32nd and 64th.... But for the typical weekend warrior handyman that is really a waste of time. It's an outdoor chicken coop....

! ! ! AWESOME JOB ! ! ! However, Let Me Say That the perches must be round, with a diameter of 3.5 cm (1.377 inches), not smooth (like bamboo) and without bark or cracks to avoid the proliferation of parasites, And Ideal angle of the perch is 45º, because that way, one bird does not defecate on top of the other. That It ! Congrats !

Same here, I just purchased the building plans from Third Coast Craftsman. Gonna go with the original size and I also want the linoleum on the floor to help protect the wood and hopefully have it last longer. Now if I can just get my husband to start the build...he's a very handy guy but not very confident about woodwork and construction. Obviously we are not doing this save $ on eggs. A dozen eggs per week at $6.00 /dzn breaks even on a $1,500 coop at almost 5 years. Then add cost of birds, feed, bedding and other supplies and it probably has a 10year break even. I have been collecting some pallets on the side and hope to recycle those boards as siding to hold down costs. Also thinking of using 2x3 for framing walls of the coop ad nest box.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
@@stanturbyfill4147 No, the only way to recoup (no pun intended) your money would be to get more birds, which would then produce enough eggs for you to sell them. I program for a living and have no interest in that! I DO like the idea of having alternatives for everything, and as we learned with this pandemic (and the egg price spike due to the bird flu), supply chains can be quickly disrupted. I think I'm going to stick with 2x4. I want to actually add insulation to my walls. If I ever decide to heat my coop, the insulation will make it easier to do so.

Looks great! I would DEF put some insulation inside of that roof though!

Could the cartoon character you were thinking the coop looked like possibly be the Air Conditioner Unit from the Brave Little Toaster? Do you have the plans for this coop available? Also rough cost?

@@MWAWoodworks Yup. I built my coop (Carolina Coop style but shed roof) and used this type of metal roofing. It's rather awkward and scary sharp to handle but you're right, it didn't need underlayment. My husband helped me get the panels up on the rafter - where I was (I hate height!) and I screwed them directly on the purlins.

Where Do you find the little windows or did you build them yourself too?

The cartoon your (i'm) thinking of isn't a cartoon. It's a Movie. Monster House. I was thinking about it after you cut out the windows before you even said it🤣 But Chuck was probably more accurate with Futurama/Gumball. I haven't seen those. Great Coop. 🐓Love it🥚

Thank you for sharing. I have a question about the wood framing for the run on the ground. Is there anything you can put down under the wood to protect it from sitting in the dirt for it's life time? I would think that would be your weak point and would rot faster than the rest of the run design.

Put it on concrete pavers? I used pressure treated lumber so it should do well for several years.

I enjoyed watching this and Chris’s build so much I built this same coop for my 8 chickens with a ton of help from my father in law! One thing I was uncertain of is how to fasten the roof to the coop? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You should have the ability to screw the roof to the coop from inside the coop!

This one is more built for stationary use and weighs several hundred pounds. I'd probably redesign the base if I planned on moving it around alot
