-----
"A biohacker for me is somebody who is doing something clever or interesting in biology," says Josiah Zayner, a molecular biophysicist who runs The ODIN, a company that sells do-it-yourself genetic engineering kits. "They're usually these people that have been fucked by the system who are trying to unfuck themselves."
Zayner is one of the leading figures in the biohacking movement and is the main organizer of the BioHack the Planet Conference, a yearly gathering of citizen scientists. This year, over 100 members of the biohacking community met in Oakland, California to discuss a wide array of issues from at-home genetic engineering to questions on bioethics.
Biohackers have often been compared to computer hackers of the 1980s, but instead of breaking into and manipulating information technology systems, they're focused on hacking living organisms with the hopes of curing illnesses and in some cases obtaining superhuman powers.
Their shared mission is to put this technology into the hands of as many people as possible.
"People should be able to use all the technologies that science develops," says Zayner. "It shouldn't just be patented and given to companies or exclusively given to certain people."
These do-it-yourself biologists say the democratization of science has given them the freedom to do work on projects that are often ignored by larger institutions. They're using gene editing technologies like CRISPR to create personalized treatments for those suffering from rare diseases or cancer, reverse engineering pharmaceuticals like Epi-Pens so people can make their own medicine at home, and even creating glow in the dark beer.
"I think this is the most exciting time thus far in the history of the world to be alive with respect to what we can and will do with life forms," says Hank Greely, the director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences at Stanford University.
But breakthroughs in the world of biohacking are drawing more scrutiny from federal regulators. Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration began placing restrictions on non-human genetic modifications and declared that genetically edited animals must be classified as drugs. This gives the agency broad authority over a number of do-it-yourself genetics tests and requires experiments involving animals to go through the same vetting process as a new drug.
"I guess they couldn't call them cosmetics and they couldn't call them foods, so they're like dogs are drugs," states David Ishee, a Mississippi canine breeder who is working on editing out genetic diseases in dogs. "Everybody's worried about what someone could do with this technology and nobody seems to care about the damage that not doing it will cause because these animals are dying."
Increasing regulation could undermine biohacking breakthroughs for humans as well.
"I'm a huge fan of deregulation because I believe in the inherent goodness of capitalism," says Zayner. "Stuff doesn't progress unless people do useful things with it."

Very concerning video, how can you trust any unregulated individual or group to adhere to safety guidelines which are designed to prevent disasters like the development of organisms/ animals that might pose significant risk to public health or environment? And why is it that these individuals make it seem impossible to conduct research under a regulated organisation? If you have a novel idea for research it's not impossible to do so unless ethical committees deem it unethical. Eg if you want to help cure disease in dogs or especially cancer and you can show you are qualified to do so responsibly it shouldn't be an issue. But if you want to make dogs or cats glow for the fun of it because you want a glowing cat at whatever expense to animal well being, you shouldn't be able to do that. The 'I want it now but mum and dad won't let me have it' argument doesn't fly here and it all seems really reckless.

I do kind of agree with Milkman, but I think it needs to be a systematic approach. If somebody has the credentials vs some schmoe off the street.

His issue is the companies bribing people to make their own Regulations as he says in his orgininal quote. Companies bribing polititians to create red tape to stiff competition is the complete opposite of free market capitalism. His views are not conflicting

He's saying that these technologies shouldn't be monopolized by one or a few companies. This is part of capitalism - to avoid monopolies because it stifles innovation. What IS ideologically confused is to think that capitalism means "big companies bad". Big companies are fine unless they are monopolies or semi-monopolies. People who think everything big or powerful or rich is bad are ideologues. It's a primitive fear instinct that is strong enough so that it turned into an ideology.

Shit i wish my chocolat lab would glow in the dark that damn dog trips me every night always laying in doorways like an idiot. Completely invisible because she blends right in being chocolate. Its annoying because the dog allways jumps up and looks at you like it wants to say ( what the fuck are you blind quit tripping over me ) The most annoying things she does Is when she lays at the top of the stairs. Its like she is. Purposely trying to get you to trip and fall down the stairs.

I'm all for pro genetic engineering, but for every positive results there's always negative consequences. A cutting of the sequences of genes for a particular disease will probably inevitably bring out new disease due to the changes in the genetic coding.

Seems to me this is a three sided issue. There is the good many would like to do with this kind of thing. There is the effort of the government to strangle innovation so they can control the gateways of competition for those who pay them to do so. Then there is what actually happens with so many people playing around with something that could be this dangerous. The best solution lays somewhere between those. Both the potential for good and the potential for disaster are tremendous here.

This video resonated with me in a very profound way. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder. I was told that identifying and 'fixing' the damaged gene is relatively easy and inexpensive. The issues are: 1. The Australian medical system is set up to fork out millions of dollars in palliative care but apparently isn't set up for personalised gene treatment outside of the meagre amount if trials on offer which is zero for mitochondrial disease. 2. I was told by a public hospital endocrinologist that I could have my mitochondrial genome sequenced if I was a child but (direct quote) "as an adult we won't be wasting those resources on you". I was told that I might live for a few years yet and that I would be contacted if I wasn't too sick (or dead) if/when they come up with something. There are many hundreds of ud dying in paun, knowing thatthere will be no cure for us because the medical establishmen hasn't figured out how to exploit us for enough financial gain to make it worth their while. When I remind doctors that I'm dying anyway I generally have recieved a speech/lecture on ethics, rules and the fact that they know more about everything than any patient. It sucks when a life is worth less than the cost of a crispr kit. I wrote this without rereading/editing it. I hope it makes sense. Thank you for posting your video.

make me have rapid muscle growth and a high testosterome level, and rapid height so i can be the person i want to be
@naejimba
@naejimba 4 жыл бұрын
Muscle growth I was thinking about... Belgian blue cows lack the GFD-8 Gene, meaning they lack myostatin that limits muscle growth. It can occur in other animals and humans... look at the first condition listed on this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldl-nJtozqyqZKM.html There are two specific conditions that cause this effect in humans; one that harms individuals and another without seemingly any downside. If the genes responsible could be isolated, this is a very real possibility. Medical testing tends to be done on mice due to the similarities to humans... a first step would be to run illegal tests on laboratory mice, and then move to a human. As for high testosterone, there are downsides to going too high... at any rate, it is possible to get injections from a medical professional if your testosterone is on the lower side. With height, and much of the benefits I'm assuming you would want from higher testosterone (I'll just say it, penis size, everyone is thinking it) would have to occur during development and puberty. That much cannot be done... but the rapid muscle growth without needing to exercise is a VERY real possibility. Imagine the money that could be made... a black market version of the super soldier serum from the Captain America movie, going to the highest bidder. How delightful...
@naejimba
@naejimba 4 жыл бұрын
Ah... apparently they have found a way to do it in mice... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJNka7WHxte-k58.html Lee Sweeney apparently published a paper in 1998 in which they used gene therapy to put an extra copy of IGF1 into muscle cells of mice. A word of caution though... apparently when trying human tests someone died. XD

There is no wrong way to use it. Use it how ever you want there should not be any laws/regulations except no killing another human being or testing on people without there concent thats it. Other than that go wild expirement on whatever you want. expierments are what moves our world forward. And the more people doing it the faster we learn and move forward, so it is a good thing for sure.it will help us adapt so we can colonize other planets or travel through space for generations without the lack of gravity affecting use. It could do so much for our species and even other species around the galaxy helping them be able to live here on earth and breath our air with no problems or help us be able to live on there planet, or even help us live on a planet like mars or the moon. Or any planet in other galaxies. It has so many ways of helping us and any species for that matter.

Who cares about regulation? Do the science. Find the answers. Post it online, open source and don't get caught. Test on yourself if you want to. It's your body, go crazy.

The video only has their titles on there for a moment but they are on there when they flash their names initially, also some of their affiliations and they arent exactly "amateurs". Most of what we are doing (and yes I am part of the DIY Bio/Biohacking community) is trying to democrotize science and make doing research and advences in science accessible to everyone. If anyone else want to dig more into this I highly recommend at a min looking at the speaker list for the conference this was filmed at, Josiah's second annual BioHack The Planet (again i'm biased a bit as I was a speaker) OR if you have uhh. ok honestly like 10 hours watch the talks from the weekend they are all filmed and online. biohacktheplanet.com/2017-speakers/

I'm opposed to government regulation in the marketplace. But in this case it's probably needed. Just as it would be for most physics research and the like. The fact that molecular biology is not fully understood means we shouldn't really be encouraging people to play around in their garage with it. Maybe relaxing regulations a bit so that private companies have an easier time with research would help.

Biohacking is good for humanity. people from different background bringing new ideas or approach to resolve a problem. They are not limited by corporate rules, lobbies and reserachers coming all from the same school having a robot like set of mind. Biohackers should do whatever they see fit. However, principles should be set up in order for biohackers not to toy with dangerous stuff like malaria. Keep them experimenting with irl non lethal stuff

I think there does need to be some regulation at the very least because these people seem like really good guys but, what if someone wanted to use this to make themselves a biological weapon and do a terrorist attack? With that being said I believe biohacking should be legal because without it being illegal people will do it irresponsibly . But hey this is just my silly opinion.

I agree with most of this but I didn't like the anti-patent comment. If you invent or discover something you have a right to benefit from it. saying anyone can use something that someone else spent money to develop is a form of theft

scurvydog20 I can see either side of intellectual property arguments. I do want people incentivized to create new things, but I also don't want to not be allowed to profit off my own ideas just because someone else thought of it slightly sooner than I did.

To live a good life and be healthy, you need food that is produced ethically and a healthy environment and lifestyle, you do not need more and more manipulation of shit you put into your body, ie all animals (including humans) don't need yet more drugs or damage to their body to supposedly 'cure' them. Manipulation of biological constituents and processes is counter productive. Eat well to live well, love your partner and share happiness with others, don't be greedy or hateful . . .
