I made this book press out of two cutting boards and some hardware. The cutting boards already have holes in the them and these holes perfectly accommodate 7/16 in bolts!
These are the materials I used:
2 Farberware cutting boards with silicone corners

8 washers 7/16th
4 wing nuts 7/16th

Instead of using hex bolts, try carriage bolts. They can have threads all the way down, plus you won't have to use a wrench to hold them down while you tighten the wing nuts. Also using epoxy to hold them permanently in place.

Nice project. You might think about using "threaded knobs" instead of wing nuts, for just a couple dollars more will be easier to tighten and easier on the hands. Also, a rubber washer under the head of the bolt might help with the spinning and remove the need for a wrench.

I would suggest a second set of washers to protect the bamboo from the bolt heads! Also, you can get thicker washers, or extra sets, to add height and raise the wingnuts up into the threads when you're pressing thinner notebooks!

sky, drills today are not expensive. Don't think of it as a single-use item. Once you have one, you'll discover that it solves a host of problems. Check out Northern Freight tools (my wife calls it Big Lots For Boys). Their tools are inexpensive and come with the same warranty as Craftsman. I have a number of them and have never had a problem. Good luck.

I went today and purchased the supplies I needed to make a press like yours. I have it put together. The total cost was $45.00 + tax. But it will be worth it & I'm sure to purchase one it would cost much more. I plan to press flowers or press my signatures before sewing them in. They tend to wrinkle when you coffee dye them. Thank you so much.

Great job! If you want to increase the ability to tighten the boards down add a couple of extra washers on top of the existing ones - they act as spacers. Such a quick and easy solution there to buying expensive bookbinding equipment. Well done. Doc from Australia

This tutorial was fantastic!! I had just put in an order for these exact cutting boards and then miraclously found this tutorial. I ended up using 3/8 - 4 in fully threaded bolts, which were too small, but I just added a washer and a nut to sandwich the bolts into place. It worked like a charm.

Great execution! Might make one myself - I do love me some printmaking. Some suggestions: IF you have a hacksaw, get threaded rod instead - its going to be threaded all the way and all you would need to do is cut it to size. Also, do yourself a favor and get a ratchet/socket wrench to go along with the crescent wrench you have there, as it makes it significantly easier to make a tighter hold and get a better press (crescent wrenches have a nasty habit of slipping). On top of that, put washers on both sides of the board as it spreads out the force and makes a better bond - and also reduces wear and tear on the boards as it keeps the hex head from digging into the wood. And for a final bit, I would personally use wax paper or parchment to separate the book from the board as with pressure whatever finish is on the board might mess up your books or you might end up with other gunk issues. Everything here would probably run you about the same amount if not a little more, but would have a much longer self life and be easier to fix. Happy bookmaking!

You can use hot glue on the bottom of the bolts so that they stay in place when adjusting the wingnuts and while the hot glue is still warm you can mold it so that it's in a decent shape to act as feet. Killing two birds with one stone.

I bought these boards specifically with the intention of making a book press out of them, and thought I would have to drill holes, but was surprised to find the nice pre-drilled holes upon removing the corners. I removed them because figured the boards should lie flush against one another for a book press.

This is a great idea. I loved the no drill option but unfortunetly none of MY area Walmarts carry these boards and if Walmart does have them they are only available in the store, not online. So there I go. By the time I buy a regular one at over 11.00 each I am way over my budget. LOLOLOL. Great idea though. Will keep my eyes open.
