Average Joe's Jim does projects and maintenance at home that even an Average Joe can accomplish. This Episode, Jim repairs the umbrella cord on his cantilever umbrella outside his master bedroom. Cantilever umbrellas are nice to have, and fairly expensive. When the cord breaks, and it won't open, even an Average Joe can replace it and save the money on buying a new one. Here's some Amazon Affiliate links to tools and materials I used to fix this umbrella:
550 paracord 100ft. : amzn.to/3Q83X3n
Phillips Head Screwdriver: amzn.to/3i7KTlv
Shop Vac Vacuum: amzn.to/3dFGG57
Cotton String: amzn.to/3g93gED

FYI - i forgot to say thanks for the video as well! It REALLY helped tremendously, seeing you take it apart to see the pretty simple, straight forward inner workings! Your ideas - especially with the shop vac - were fantastic too! I love when people are resourceful & think outside of the box!

Great video. A tip: I tied the new cord to the old cord from the top of the umbrella. That way I could pul the new cord through the cantilever without any problem.

I was ready to throw my umbrella in the dumpster, then decided to try to fix it first - not knowing a thing about how to do it. I saw your video pop up and realized it was the same model mine was and the same problem. Thirty minutes later, I have a fixed umbrella and there's one less thing in the landfill. You are the greatest. Thank you *so* much.

Thank you! I watched this very clear video and it gave me an idea where to begin. I couldn’t , however, get to the hole in the crank because of the ratchet. After cutting off the old cording, I just tied my new cord to the last couple of inches of the original cord. I used a heavy darning needle to weight the cord and bring it through the curved pole by shaking it along. The rest was easy!

Thank you for your vacuum tip! We have a different umbrella type, one that tilts; the pass-through for the cord is very small. I watched your video and used some blue tape to close up as many holes as we could. My son and I were AMAZED that the vacuum actually got a string through! Thanks for saving us $300 on our broken umbrella!

I had different model but this was helpful! I recommend if you're having issues getting the paracord in small holes, pull out about inch of the interior string and Cut it off. After melt the casing into a pointy design. This makes it easier to get into smaller holes without it being bulby I also wasn't able to complete this without metal hanger I unraveled

Brilliant! This vid saved me 100s of$$. I had to adapt bits to suit shape of my umbrella. Tip, the first pull through the hole at 2.53, I don't have those tools, so I tied a piece of string to pull it through the wee hole. I could not get the vacuum to pull the string through the second part. My pole was very curved, so I made the pole be vertical against me and got gravity to do the work :). Worked a treat. Thank you

Would a fish tape help for placing the paracord ? And why paracord vs nylon.?Just curious.
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects Жыл бұрын
A fish tape should work, depending on the size of the tape. I'd say give it a shot. A few subscribers have mentioned they also used a rigid wire, or even just gravity from the top to get it through. One of the fun parts of home projects is coming up with new and innovative ways to problem solve. Good luck, hope all goes well!

Perfect video and excellent instructions, thank you! How did you determine the length of cord you needed?
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Yes, so if you run the cord through and attach it to the umbrella frame when the umbrella is down, that’s the minimum length that the cord needs to be. Add a little extra to the crank just in case the cord shrinks a little over time from temperature shifts.
@Maximus1Az
@Maximus1Az 2 жыл бұрын
Question. You had cut the pars cord after fishing it through the top of the umbrella. Was there any extra pars cord that you wrapped up in the crank shaft like the previous string ? Or is the paracord strong enough to not have any extra string
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects 2 жыл бұрын
The paracord should be strong enough to hold, however if you keep a little extra to wind on the crank post, it will put less pressure on your knot and will probably last longer. Great catch! And good question! Thanks for supporting the channel!

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I am following your steps to fix mine. One question I have is how many feet of para cord did you put back on the crank? The one I bought is very long and would not fit into the housing. Sorry if you mentioned this and I missed it

What length do you need cut the paracord to do this? Or did you just measure the old line

Measuring the old one is a solid option. That’s probably your most accurate method. Good luck and keep fixing!

Thanks for this! I haven't done the repair yet, but I was wondering two things: how do you know where to cut the paracord to length and do you really need to buy the 100 ft vs the 50 ft?
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects 2 ай бұрын
So the best way to determine how much cord you need is to hook up the cord where the umbrella end is. After you’ve run the cord through the umbrella frame to the crank you’re ready to determine length. Make sure the umbrella is closed because that’s the longest the cord will need to be. At the crank end, add l a couple extra feet of slack before cutting the cord. Then attach the end of the cord to the crank post. Now you should be able to open and close the umbrella fully. Hope the fix goes well! And thanks for watching!

@@averagejoesjimshomeprojects OK, finally got to the repair today. Definitely trickier than I thought it would be! The worst part was when the crank handle fell out from the housing after removing the nuts from the two bolts. I don't have the same plastic tubes holding the bolts in that you did here. When I looked at the crank handle piece, there was a spring, a small shaped wire and a tapered metal piece. I knew they were for ratcheting and holding the rope crank at position, but how? After some experimentation, I got it (hoped it would work) and proceeded with threading the new cord. Long story short, it actually worked when I put it all back together! Now I just need to replace the faded and thinned umbrella fabric! Thanks again!

Will be curios to hear feedback on how many seasons the paracord lasts. When the umbrella is down, a small section at the pulley is continually exposed to UV.

I had to replace the canpony, however after I put the new canopy on when I open the umbrella the pole does not go all the way down into where the arms spread open. I have about 2 inches of string in-between. I tried shortening the string at the end but it had no affect. Any ideas? also when I crank the umbrella after the umbrella is closed it keeps cranking and starts to open again. Any ideas?
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure… you could have a missing part in there somewhere. Shortening the string should’ve helped. Hope you find the issue. That’s the exact fix I would’ve when with.

Don't know if anyone is still monitoring this, BUT before I got taking mine apart looking for ANY IDEAS on what's happening w/ my new umbrella? Just recently (after storm?) when closing, the whole canopy is slipping off the road all together & hanging strictly off the cord alone. Opening, it all works fine/ goes back up rod as its supposed to. DO YOU THINK maybe the cord just got stretched out & I may just have to tighten/ re-knot it? (I am disabled, though enjoy DIY, but before I do all that work for me & regret it)... I'm trying to be logical here, as the cord is clearly not snapped & it is a bug umbrella - I usually use under the porch when it rains for my dogs to stay dry when let out for potty time. I also use an old school rubber strap bungee for when it gets windy to keep in place (don't think that had anything to do with issue, or did it?!) THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INPUT!

Hmmm, it sounds like you’re on the right track. From your description my best guess is the cord is too long, stretched out, or your hand crank isn’t ratcheting properly in its lower position. If the crank is just loose and won’t hold the umbrella then it will continue to lower like that without stopping until you run out of cord. If I may make one suggestion. If the cord is stretched out or too long, then skipping the disassembly and just going to the umbrella end and removing the cap and pulling some cord out that end and then retrying the knot would be the easiest way to shorten it. See 6:37-6:55 in the video. Best of luck! Hope that helps.

Thanks for the video; we could fix our umbrella. But when we try to close the umbrella it’s very hard to pull the crank. Any idea why?
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects 6 ай бұрын
Your problem could be the pulley at the top is seized up, or maybe the gears in the crank box just need some lube. Best of luck! Hopefully the fix works out for you!

How do you replace the crank, pulled everything out and set It in order to return the way I got it out, but dropped it😮 can you help? Now when I put the gear on I can’t put the nut on it.

Oh no! I think your best bet would be to try to contact the manufacturer of your umbrella to see if they can help you with replacement parts. If that fails, you can try taking the crank to a hardware store to see if they have anything that can replace the missing parts. Finally, if you have another umbrella that is either broken or you like less than this one, you can try stealing parts from it’s crank to replace on the umbrella you love more. 🤷🏻. Terribly sorry that happened to you! Best of luck and thanks for watching!

@@averagejoesjimshomeprojects Thank you, I think that’s a great idea. I was having a problem with the order the parts went back into the housing. All the pieces aren’t fitting back so I can screw on the lad nut. But I will see if I can find something at Home Depot. Thank you for answering and the advice.

I have the same umbrella! Except the crank case doesn’t have The little straight piece that sits over the rope but under the case cover.. I’m having a hard time getting the rope to reel in properly
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects 3 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting... I wonder if the rope is slipping between the crank case and the post when reeling... if that is the issue, if you create some kind of stop for the end of the post it might do the trick. Anyway, good luck with the fix, and thank you for watching the channel!

If you run the cord from the crank, to the umbrella when it’s closed and connect it on that end with a couple inches of spare cord, that should allow it to lower and raise properly. Thanks for the inquiry! Good luck with the repair!

Sounds like the bolt that gets tightened into the umbrella stem is loose. Might try tightening it. If it’s the entire umbrella turning. It could be an issue with your base. Good luck and best wishes on finding a fix.
