If you love to garden as much as we do, you're probably looking for ways to extend your growing season and protect your plants from the elements & pests, am I right? The battle is constant. We LOVE to garden with greenhouses because they provide fantastic protection for your plants.
In this video, we've decided to build our own 10X20 foot hoop house! After building several greenhouses and now a hoop house, I can tell you the hoop house is less expensive & WAY easier/faster to put up.
This hoop house is built with cattle panels that we purchased from Tractor Supply. What a fast, easy set up! Some people arch their cattle panels all the way to the ground & fasten them down. But we wanted our hoop house to be taller, so as you can see in the video, we built a 24" wooden foundation & then arched the cattle panels to fasten to the wooden frame...which in turn made the hoop house taller!
This DIY hoop house took us maybe 2 days tops! It's big & spacious & I can't wait to get my seedlings in the ground! Just in time for the growing season.
Materials you will need:
1. Greenhouse plastic (4 months after the build we changed out the plastic. We changed it out with a durable, long lasting greenhouse plastic which was 40ft X 25ft, 6 MIL thick, 4 Year UV Resistant Polyethylene: geni.us/CkiYCaD
2. 5 cattle panels (ours were 16ft long by 50in high, made with 4 gauge wire): we bought ours from Tractor Supply Co.
3. Roll of screen for your windows
4. (2) pks zip ties
5. (2) pks pipe insulation
6. Straight nails
7. U-shaped nails (1-1/4” length by 1/4” round crown)
8. Screws
9. (4) Metal T-posts
10. (2) 4x4s cut in half
11. (2) bags cement
12. (4) 2x2x8s
13. (12) 2x4x10s
14. (15) 1x2x8s
15. (17) 2x4x8s
After your hoop house is constructed, you can have fun adding some upgrades to enhance your hoop house experience! Two things I always add to my greenhouse & hoop house are shade cloths to regulate the temperature in the HOT summer months & fans to help circulate the air.

For our tobacco green houses, we put tennis balls on one side of the plastic using a string to tie each ball into the plastic. Then tie a rock to the other end of the strings and throw the rocks over the greenhouse. Now pull in unison and the plastic goes over the greenhouse. If necessary poke the balls up from the inside if they get stuck.

Putting the cattle panels on the two-foot stem walls makes a huge difference in the width and height of your greenhouse. It converts a marginal hoop house to something with plenty of space with only minor concessions to expense. I like it.

I would of suggested to cut a channel out of the edge of the long inner side with a table saw or hand held router, so the metal would flex to timber, not just being held by the U nails. Shouldn't be much of a difference normally, im just thinking of the areas ive lived in, that occasionally get really high winds.

One helpful hint i use on my garden, when you staple the plastic to the wood, use small strips of cardboard couple inches long on top of the plastic, the staples won't just pull right through

Not a lot of people may be aware, but Home Depot sells - online only - steel zip ties. I really like them cuz they don't get brittle and break after X# years outdoors. Also, I think they're easier to use than hog rings.

Invest in Safety Wore Pliers there jaws are designed to lock and they have a corkscrew inbetween the handles i will never waste money on zipties again

This is an absolutely BRILLIANT concept for a smallish greenhouse, storage building, project shelter, etc. Cattle panels---who knew?!? I need to construct a boatbuilding shed and have been looking at all sorts of plans and materials. This system makes the most sense, for the least money, by far. Moreover I have a friiend who can enclose it with heavy heat-shrink plastic for a tight, perfect fit. Thank you SO much for the idea.

I have built 2 cattle panel greenhouses, I use 2 automatic opening foundation vents down low on each side of the door and 2 up high in the back end. these allow hot air to flow out on warm winter days when my house will reach 90 degrees.

Looks great! Awesome job! Only thing I'd suggest is to add probably 2 internal PVC pipes that form extra support for the roof span. They can bend easily and conform to the same curve of the cattle panels. This will help support the overall structure, as snowload can take out the whole thing...been there..done that. Good luck!

Although the black zip ties are made for outdoor use they will eventually get brittle. Hog-rings would be my choice for connecting the cattle fence panels. Nice job. Darlington, South Carolina

I just purchased metal zip ties. Was told to secure ends due to the sharpness of the band. Should last longer and be stronger than the plastic zip ties.

A cattle panel is 16 feet by 50 inches. If you spread the cattle panel 11 1/2 feet, to make a hoop, it will stand 5 feet in the center. When this is mounted on a two foot base, like you have in the photo, it will stand 7 feet. A good general height. If you use extra long posts on the perimeter that stick up 3 feet above the ground, 1 1/2 feet in the hole, you then have a nailer from the inside of the GH. This allows you to place a horizontal 2x4 inside the post, about 6-8 inches above the bottom of the panel. This nicely spreads the panel, side to side so that instead of a 7 foot peak, you have about 7 feet at the peak, not pointy, and the sides of the curve rise up a little so you can walk around near the walls without banging your head!

Dagaan Galakticos, I was considering your idea and thought to myself, with the extra 1 ft of post above ground I'd have to buy much more 4x4's right? I think i'd have too much scrap wood that'd get wasted. Could I just bury them 1ft in the ground and have 3ft above so as not to have to purchase a lot more 4x4x8's?

I was also about to tip this and then say save some plastic to protect the wood on the inside, your foundation 2x4 is touching your soil. This will cause wood rot over time, instead, double line the wood frame at the base so that the inside of it is also plastic lined also. That way the wood never touches water, thus never rotting.

I have a conventional greenhouse but I just discovered deer ate my apple saplings over the winter. SO, with less fruit trees and a large pre-mulched bed, I will be building one of these with a hardware cloth covering instead of plastic. Thank you for the great step by step video!

I didn't think to add the pony walls to raise the height, but I made a two-panel hoop coop very similar to yours. I just made the frame on the ground out of 2x6s. I also used hog rings to hold the panels together because I was concerned that zip ties might break down over years of exposure to the sun's UV rays, and a hog ring was going to last a very long while. Mine was that wide but only two panels long because it was the run for our chickens. I also covered the cattle panels with chicken wire to keep out predators and I went to a company that prints outdoor billboards and got some of their shade cloth that allows the wind to pass through tiny holes so the sign doesn't get torn up by the wind. I had to cut it to size and pound brass grommets into it and then I lashed it in place. Two years later and it is still doing great. My hens get enough light, but there is enough shade that they don't overheat in the summer. In the winter I throw a tarp over it to protect them from the wind and to hold in a little bit of heat for them.

I've done a few of raised hoop houses and I really like your build! Thank you so much for sharing this. Just to note, if one intends to have this withstand it, the weight of snow can (likely will -ask me how I know) collapse it, whether sectionally or completely. I ended up implementing (having to) "strategic" framing inside for withstanding collapse. you just cannot guatantee snow will slough off!

Another frame that can be used is the one from the Harbor Freight the plastic storage shed ,once the plastic wears out the frame can be used for other projects

Looks great! If you drop the end of the plumb line in a bucket of water or fluid it can help limit the swaying to give a good reading quicker!

Plumb bobs are often found at yard sales And used tool stores weighing more like the weight of a 3/4 inch bolt. That and the pail of water will give you a line going straight down. I love the T posts .

The wood frame side walls are excellent for extending as full length tables for more planting/seed germination surfaces. You could even have stove jack/stove in there and watch your seeds grow in the winter months with a cup of tea/coffee 😁

Super clean build! The added height from the wooden frame is so nice, and if you're on a budget that part can easily be built with free wooden pallets :)

That’s exactly how we did ours, screwed together pallets then used cattle panels for the top. We can roll the plastic up to the top of the pallets in the summer for good air flow and prevent overheating. Because everything was used and basically free our costs to put up a 12’ & 20’ greenhouse was under $30.

My only suggestion would be to use hog rings to join the panels instead of zip ties. They'll last a lot longer and are stronger, especially in wind

So glad I just found your channel! Wanted a high tunnel but live where you can't have them as far as huge high tunnels and they are somewhat expensive. This is an amazing alternative!

Hello very nice greenhouse design. It is practical, simple and cheap to make. The only thing I would add would be cement pads to anchor the wood to the ground while protecting it from ground moisture. From what I see in the video they have a waterlogging problem. This will create a problem with the useful life of wood, crops and ornamental plants. Moisture is the greatest enemy of constructions of any type and material. The solution to this is a system of ditches to guide the water in the land to the outside of the property or to a designated drainage area. If they do not have access to drainage, a rudimentary one can be built with ditches and a well. The well in question and the ditches can be filled with boulders and gravel to give a greater area for absorption and storage of water on the ground and prevent harmful insects from breeding or collapse due to humidity. This system will not only protect the land, but also the structures and crops located on it.

I admire your hard work and creativity.Its beautiful! I made a small green house last year using nothing but scrap lumber and a window from construction waste and lots of free pallets.I had to buy pvc pipe to make the arch and greenhouse plastic for the sides and screws. It was framed with 2 x 4s on the sides and ends and doors and has one down the middle to support the pvc.I used pallets on the sides and on the floor.This year I'm making another hoop house for my chickens using more construction waste ,scrap wood, free pallets(no pvc pipe)I have a brand new roll of hardware cloth and some fence wire from a previous project.
