Thankyou Darryl this video was very helpful as I am about to try to tackle the same project myself. You are definitely right I have been searching KZfaq for videos on how to deck over concrete and there aren't many at all or videos as easy as this one is to follow especially for myself being a beginner DIYer and trying to give it a go myself. Thankyou for taking the time in creating a great how to video that is easy to follow.

Excellent video -- also helpful to me over here in the US. I've had the same problem you mentioned: not a lot of KZfaq videos on how to deck over concrete. Plus, each concrete stoop is a bit different, and each project uses different finishing material (hardwood; composite; treated softwood). Thanks for doing this and for being approachable about it.

Really encouraging to see the way you designed your foundation with the joists. And, your content is very straight forward while using some of the more modern technologies - so the rest of us don’t have to somehow acquire knowledge of the more traditional methods. I myself have a very uneven patio (however brick) and have very low clearance between the house and the fence. The lowest is about 2”, and the highest is 4”. Is it safe to use the 2x4 (I think that’s what you used) on its flatter side (the 4” sitting flat against the slab)? When I see others using 2x4s, they install the joists on the 2” side.

My parents' old house has an atrocious concrete porch, doesn't even have railing and its a good 30inch drop! Plus, they are well into retirement and need a ramp, so the first step in my plan is to deck over the concrete like this, then the stairs, then install a ramp coming out the side to the driveway. There's enough of a height difference between the door threshold and the concrete to fit some kind of decking, but I might have to rip the "joists" down to a half inch to accommodate the deck boards. The question remains, how to skirt the sides? I want to hide the concrete entirely, so I thought about using red brick to match the exterior walls, but wood deck with brick skirting doesn't really work. So I guess I will just paint it white or something.

Very informative mate!! Will be doing something similar but with ecodeck boards. Just need to get the slab to stop pooling water below the deck before I start. Also, treat yourself to a longer impact bit haha. Thought it was some sort of magical driver at first, driving screws without a bit.

Can’t beat spotted gum mate, durability 1 - very hard wearing and beautiful colour range... nice job Darryl, very nice indeed 👍 The only thing I would have to say, and this is from someone who sells hundreds of metres every week, is make sure you pre-oil it on the bottom / underside, the edges and the ends where it butts together to stop cupping. Cupping is more prevalent in the wider boards however depending on how much water the boards get, cupping can still happen on the narrow boards too. The problem is that every time the boards get wet ( be it rain or hosing down ), the moisture will sit on that concrete slab underneath. Then the sun comes out and heats the top of the board so as the board is heating and contracting on the top, the capillary action draws moisture up from the slab and into the underside / bottom of the boards causing swelling. So the top shrinks and the bottom expands - leading to the boards looking like a banana in no time at all, can be as little as a month or two ( had 1 customer just before Christmas have to replace a heap of boards after just 3 weeks ! 😳 ) So oil the crap out of the bottom / sides / ends as mentioned with the best oil on the market - ‘Cutek’ - don’t use the cheap ‘made to a selling price’ oils from the large green hardware chain - but get the good ‘Cutek’ oil and it will help minimise cupping. It won’t totally stop it but will help prolong the inevitable. Anyone looking to do a similar job over concrete, keep in mind the Australian standards for decking is a minimum 300mm from below the deck to ground level and no manufacturer of decking ( or even the wholesalers ) will warrant any decking against cupping when laid less than 400mm off the ground / substrate. Great clip though mate and nice looking timber indeed, I love the old spotty 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍👍

Great tips mate. 👍 His decking is only around 50mm off the ground but sometimes there isn’t much option. Looks great and great idea to place shims beneath the joists. I’ll be doing mine soon with spotted gum and it’ll be around 200mm off the ground but I’ll probably go with a 5mm gap for my 90mm wide boards. That’s enough gap?
@4WheelingInNSW
@4WheelingInNSW 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephj6521 yeah sometimes there may not be be enough room so I’m that case, we always recommend something other than decking - like timber look tiles or pavers, less headache then. Yes a 5mm gap should be fine, it’s not even so much the gap between the boards that’s such an issue, it’s more that capillary action of the moisture below the boards that presents the biggest issue. The 86mm wide boards are definitely less prone to cupping, in fact the narrower the better, but yes it can be an issue when close to the ground. 👍👍

You could use composite decking yes?
@4WheelingInNSW
@4WheelingInNSW Жыл бұрын
@@dengshomeinvasions1273 yes definitely, you just won’t get the natural beautiful colour variation and subtle tones of the natural timber from a man made composite, it just can’t be accurately replicated quite the same. Spotted Gum would have to be one of the most coloured and a patterned timbers you can get 😉👍👌👌 With composites, well the Aussie made modwood brand anyway, you still need 300mm clearance over natural ground however on a concrete slab you can’t get away with a minimum 50mm between your slab and decking boards. 😉

Yes there has been a real shortage on framing / H3 timber in Australia throughout 2021. Being an imported product from NZ, it can’t come into the country quick enough and the problem is only going to worsen this year due to global demand and especially now America, who have been 30-40% ‘under’ building, wants to really gear up and start smashing out houses in record numbers this year. There’s a number of contributing factors ( like the US on selling to China because they won’t but from us here ) that has put a huge load on manufacturing plus because Australia represents such a small export market, unfortunately we’re kind of last in the ‘export list’. Wholesalers here in Australia order 30 container loads and get 5 delivered, that’s if they’re lucky. Then out of those 5 they have to divvy it up amongst all the retailers and hardware stores so you can see how the problem snowballs. Then you have the truss and framing companies who take a huge chunk of stock for project home builders etc..... Fingers crossed we get back to some normality soon. 🤞🤞🤞

Thank you for the video. It’s very useful. I have a situation where in order to keep the termite protection warranty the company has advised to keep 25mm gap between the brick wall and the deck. What’s your experience in these type of situations? 25 mm seems a bit gap and I’m worried that it’d look ugly.

Well you could.... I'd prefer to have bearers off the concrete though. Just so air can flow under the bearers which will dry out any moisture, along with allowing any moisture to escape easily.

Looks amazing! I only had 1 question; with the gaps between the boards what about dirt, debris and potential insects ie wasps building nests under the decking? Oh, one more question, I love the rubber on top of the 2x4s, maybe I missed it, but what about moisture getting under the 2x4s and moisture getting in the holes in the treated lumber?
@DarrylSheather
@DarrylSheather Жыл бұрын
The boards just unscrew with the screws I'm using. You can't encapsulate the bearers, so stopping water pooling on top is a good thing.

Hey mate, I'm doing a similar deck. I'm just struggling to work out how to do the side bits (the vertical sides). It's all going over a concrete slab but the sides will stick out and look silly if I run a joist vertically, if that makes sense. I want the decking to hug the wall as tightly as possible basically. I was thinking about just using some 5mm window spacers, and drilling the through the decking board straight into the concrete. Effectively there'd be a 5mm gap. Is there any issue with this? Or is there some other way to get the decking boards to hug the vertical border sections. Thanks in advance

I just ran a joist overhanging the concrete by 5mm then screwed the sides to that using a 136mm wide decking timber, worked a treat.

Hi, why in particular did you want to use 90 x 45 joists instead of 70 x 45. Did you need the height? I am doing the same over a very large area (54 m2) and feel that 70 x 45 will do the job.
@DarrylSheather
@DarrylSheather Жыл бұрын
The joists have been laid on their side (only had approx 60mm height in total). The 90 x 45's allowed me some wiggle room to offset and countersink the hold down bolts with enough room in between to have a clear path to screw down the decking screws.

I’ve laid the joists down because of height requirements and so I could bolt into the slab through the joists. Normally joists would be laid with the 90 up because they are stronger that way. You may just been to use a bracket to hold them down rather than drilling through. Hope that makes sense
