I went to the Dollar Tree last year and found these stackable garden towers and I thought to myself that I could build a hydroponic tower out of it. This was cheap in the the sense that you can buy pieces of the build little by little so you can make it one day. It reminds me of a prototype but its fully functional.
Dollar tree tower containers
sturdy bin/tote
water pump
1/4in tubing
1/2-1in main tube
connectors
leca balls

Absolutely right! I LOVE to bounce ideas off of people. It helps me further implement/change/restructure mine. Without bouncing ideas I only see 1 perspective n I'm not a fan of that

Great idea! I melted the holes and that helped prevent the breakage. I also ran a pipe up through the middle for the water. Thanks for the great idea!

There are so many good ideas here, you've inspired me to build my own. I love how it's an indoor water feature with the constant soothing trickling that also happens to have live plants. I'll change the bottom reservoir to be round to match the circular shape of the planters, put it on casters to move around. I'll figure out how to hide the tubing, maybe run it all down the middle through a pvc pipe. Painting it all black is smart, really makes the plants pop. For a prototype I think it's pretty damn cool, thank you for all the effort and for feeding me some ideas!

Of course you were testing it at 11:30 pm! Personally I move furniture around and “organize” but now you’ve given me the inspiration I needed to get the indoor garden going!! You rock woman!! Liked and subscribed. 👍🏼💚

Try getting a cheap soldering iron and burn a hole where you need one. I paid about $14.. It will last a long time. Thanks for sharing this is a great idea. I do Kratky sometime.

Rather than using a drill try using a soldering iron to make the holes next time. It will stop the cracking of the plastic 😍

Warm up plastic with a hear dryer, heat gun, heater, long propane lighter, small torch ect… you can also make wholes with a hot nail, screw, ect heated up on open flame ect. If you do brake one pot put it inside of another and then you have a stronger pot. U can also paint them help with sun damage.

That drill bit is called a borer bit, or often a spade bit. Btw that caulking wasn't silicon, it was acrylic gap filler. I could tell by the way it was spreading. It's cheap but nothing on silicon. High grade silicon can hold enough weight to literally stick someone to a wall. Completely serious. Spent a lot of time, kinda years in total doing house renovations.

I bought a soldering iron from dollar general and burned holes quickly in mine. It makes it easier to make holes without cracking the stackables. Hope it helps someone. ETA: dollar tree has broom handles, if you thread that handle down through the center and into the bottom water container then the stackables will stay together easier.

I've noticed a lot of people using rods down the middle more stabilizing these when they are used outdoors with soil. I wonder if that would work with this set up. Like a pvc pipe down the center. I haven't delved into hydroponics yet, but have always been interested in it and auqaponics.

Run the “veins” through the middle holes for less clutters. I am working on a similar system with a pipe in the middle for water delivery and drainage.

Aweswome! I just bought a bunch of these at the Dollar (twenty-five) Tree and was trying to figure out a system. Thanks! Ideas: Construction adhesive to hold it in place. 1/2" (artery! love it!) pumping water into topTop container: 3-5 tiny holes in the bottom of each container and then one larger on the sides of those containers to allow extra water to run into containers not directly below the top).

Enable to get them to hold on to water I would maybe fix a piece of a straw like 1to 2 in height into the drainage holes that you drilled in the bottom of the containers. Basically it would be like a bell syphon you would use for aquaponic style systems

Had you thought of running just one tube up through a large center hole with smaller holes burned around the center hole (yes, instead of a drill, try burning with a wood burning or soldering iron that is "pointy." That way you only need the one piece of tubing, the water bubbles out at the top only and then returns through those smaller holes back down to the tub at the bottom. Definitely you need a portion of the tub's lid to be removable (hot glue or silicone a hinge if you like) so you can add water/nutrients as needed. Otherwise, creativity to completion of a project is a good thing - you did it!

Oh yes that was the next one to try out. A pvc straight through the center!

So… after looking at mine and designing it before I saw yours here are my differences. Using a hot rod to burn thru the plastic. Putting a hole between the cups in line with the top lines of the cups. So it will flow directly into the cups of the ones below. The pump below sitting below the soil level for summer. Or under a “box “ to hide the large container. The only thing I did not like in my planning is that I will have to have the “water Line” up the back side. It will be unsightly. Keeping the hole further up between the pots will also give the plants totally submerged or at least partially when and if there is lack of water for any reason. What do you think?
