Thanks Mike for a very clear presentation about how to make driftwood. I am trying to turn a nice piece of Ivy trunk (not poison ivy) into a driftwood at the present. It has been sitting in my back yard for over a year and it will look great once in the aquarium. Thanks again for the presentation.

Hey Mike, wood is an amazing addition to any tank, and each piece is unique! Especially for plecos like you mentioned. My tanks are STACKED with wood as I like the softer acidic water. it helps with breeding and its more natural so makes the fish feel safe like you mentioned. Great video man!

@horsepanther7 жыл бұрын
Juan Smit, I just learned from another KZfaqr that cedar is dangerous to shrimp. He also pointed out that the fibers are not very dense so it will break down faster than some harder woods. So if those are not a concern of yours I think you can use cedar no problem. I haven't learned about oak yet. :-)

Great video bud. I go hunting for my own wood as well.. We go to very fast moving water you find some nice root sets. i pre soak the wood in a salt treatment for a month changing water weekly then i pressure wash it like you said. I brought it to the car wash. and boil it for an hour and its good to go. as long as you find it in fast moving water tannins are not really an issue but sap is a pain like you said. Great info in this video bud. My way takes a lot longer., im gong to try your method once the river ice break up. Lots of washed out roots in the spring time. Take care bud

Thanks for your hard work, great video. Question: I live in Maine and the hardest wood I can find is Oak. Do you have any information on Oak driftwood. and if it would work in a tank? Thanks!
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
I am thinking it's more of a soft wood. If aged really well your main challenge will be to get it sink. I'm boiling more driftwood that I yanked out of one of my customers ponds today. It looks like a pine or oak but Its been water logged for years. I'm going to try it in my tank tomorrow. I am boiling 3 hours and am pressure washing again before I put them in. I'll let you know how they work out for me.

Hey Mike do you boil drift that is bought from the lfs?
@MikesFishRoom17 жыл бұрын
Pa. Fish Preacher Thanks for watching my videos! I always boil it. A lot of times the wood is cured but will still leach tannins. If you give it a good 2 hour boil it will slow down how fast your tank water turns brown when introduced. Reg your other question... I have a DIY aquarium pot video. The only recommendation I will give on top of my video is if planting swords or other broad, long leaf plants. Use a larger bottle to make it. My biggest sword touched the top of a 55 and was planted in an x large gator aid bottle.
@franchesdun8 жыл бұрын
Great video Mike! I have spider wood in my 20, 29, and 55. I boiled all of them. I want nothing to harm my fish. Also it speeds up the release of tannins. I used the "bar keepers fried" to clean my big ole pot. Thank you so much for videos. I have a small piece of driftwood from FL West Coast. It has no bark, I will boil it and put it into the 10 gallon. Take care and keep up the wonderful videos.

I'm not sure after the sap has been heated but I had a tree service for yrs and if you use bleach or hand gojo you should have no problem getting the sap off of the pans. Also if you are doing a lot of drift wood try using a 55 gallon drum cut open like a smoker over an open flame to boil the water. if you have the space in your yard and a clean drum or access to one

hey mike, I have a big piece of Gold Mangrove wood (dont know what that is in america aha) brought from an aquarium store i have a huge pool, would i be able to soak it in there for a few days to let it drop then boil it?
@MikesFishRoom17 жыл бұрын
Izak Scowen I haven't used mangrove before but I would say don't get your hopes up. I've had pieces that have taken weeks/months to drop so I went ahead and boiled and waited down. Placing them in the tank as soon as they cooled in some ice water. Couple months later I take off the brick tie downs. If your piece does drop fast, it's not a bad idea(for sterilization) to go from boiling to cool down, straight to the tank. Just make sure it's stays submerged through out all steps. I've also left a piece out for a few hours and it took days to get it back down. Keep me posted and thanks for watching man!

How could I make a piece of a peach tree safe for my tank?
@slickchick58117 жыл бұрын
A tip for fellow fishophiles: If you have huge pieces to boil, get a chef's commercial stew pot. Those suckers go to 200 quarts and come in aluminum or steel. You can easily fit 2' to 3' size pieces and boil them. Prices run around 120 - 400 bucks. You can get a 120 quart pot for 120 bucks. Ebay, Amazon.

Do you have any experience on aging fresh cut wood into driftwood?
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
It's going to take a little bit of time. Doing controlled curing will speed up the process quite a bit. Boiling is the best thing to do to get out tree sap, tannins, bugs, parasites, ect. If I had fresh wood I would boil it and let it dry out in the sun. I would repeat this process until I see the wood to dry out, crack, and fade in color. If you want to set up something to do a bunch over time you can do a 50 barrels or Rubbermaid tote and submerge with rocks for 8 months to a year. I know that was a lot. Just wanted to try to be descriptive .
@tred728 жыл бұрын

right on Mike, got a say I heard cypress is not good , puzzled me cuzz of its caracteristics honestly I'm interested into finding out the truth I have a trash can full of aquarium water and some drift and bog wood I've scored all so came up on some Manzanita off the highway I'm working on Dude I think the fish enjoy live plants and driftwood more than artificial. could go on for hours about this bro ,Nice intro

Thanks for watching man! Did the person say why they thought it was bad? Living in La I see it in almost all water retention. I agree! I think these fish can tell the difference between fake and real! I can't wait to really fill my tanks with plants

Finding that manzanita is a huge score!
@damionmarkham98358 жыл бұрын
+Mike's Fish Room ,I've just read on forums that cypress is bad.it might be because it's dry and fresh compared to pieces growing submerged . Ya my manzanita is kinda old and dry. my hippie hand is weak these days but I know I can find some good pieces out there on the trail
@MikesFishRoom18 жыл бұрын
+Damion Markham I've been looking it up as well due to never having issues with it. Many people I read from state that it can be difficult to get it to sink and that cypress leaches a lot of tannins so it might not be preferred amongst the rest. Mine was so well aged that it probably made the difference. Mine hasn't leached anything to my surprise. Hippie hand. Lol honestly this stuff isn't cheap. You might make a couple bucks off of it.
