I don't usually comment on vids but in this case I'd suggest calling your local TV news station as well as print media. If your water company is being negligent and exceeding government (EPA) standards by over 100% then they have a duty to report on this. I would not stop "bothering" them until (A) They admit publicly to to problem. (B) Show that new procedures are in place to guarantee that this can not happen in the future. And (C) Pay you back for your loss. After all this loss would not have happened without their negligence. I bet that when news crews start making calls the water company will certainly want to talk with you.

Sounds like you could have a class action law suit on your hands. If people are consuming this water it most certainly a public health issue. My condolences on the loss of your fish. When you put time, care and dedication into raising fish it really is a labor of love. The pain, loss and suffering is real. great video thank you.

Thanks for the shout out - the reason I'm so big on testing my water BEFORE I add it to my tanks, even though I'm on a well and even when I was on city water is because I've been burned before --- you made an IMPORTANT point on ROI - even there you need to test because something may be causing your filter to work harder and become less effective too fast I have not been through this with a water company but I know people that have been through it - none were hobbyists --- wish I could help but I suspect they are not going to give you value for your fish - the big guys seldom do - printing out prices from a big outfit like Live Aquaria might be your best shot - maybe include Wetspot - I wouldn't include anyplace with a person's name in it, sounds too mom & pop if you know what I mean - I wouldn't include Aquabid or anything smacking of auctions - best I can offer

Sue them. If levels were high and still under their standards, that's one thing, but if they are above Federal standards, that's pretty f**ked up. You potentially saved people in your area from getting sick. Your fish were the canary in the coal mine, this could have been millions of dollars worth of damage if you didn't warn someone.

hey man this is totally something you should fight for. I kept a 14in Florida gar, and a 15in pacu together in a 75gal tank. I try to do water changes every other week. one day my gf calls me to say my gar is belly up... I loved those fish. and frankly my gar was the favorite. being that I have not changed my tank setup or care within months of its death, I could only assume a water quality problem. my town pulls water straight from a lake. me being in ny, we happen to have some of the cleanest lakes. my city has permits not to filter the water to allow beneficial minerals and micro organisms thru. but I have found this trend in the past year where other fish keepers ( both youtube and local) have had this chlorine spike problem. your totally justified fighting for your reenbersment. the fish alone are over $600. non fish caretakers don't understand that fish keeping is a full time job. good luck to you! and rip Garvey my lost friend. ps my pacu is still going strong, hes always a friendly face.

This same thing about happened to me the other day. My fish were sucking air and couldn't figure out what was going on. Luckily I kept a eye on them and just kept putting dechlor in every so often to see if it was making them better. Luckily I put enough in. Thanks for sharing your experience and sorry for your loss, its never easy to lose your fish. This video solidified my theory of what happened that day and how now to respond with such a issue. I bet your news channel might find the story interesting and that may help sway the company to settle...

New subscriber here Mike. Sorry for your loss. Back in early 90's (yes i am OLD) I had the same thing happened to all of my freshwater and it devastated my 1200 gallons of tanks and I was frustrated out of the hobby. H2PU company was clueless. I Now am getting baker into the hobby and love all the great resources available like your chanel and am using uv-steril RO filtered water now days but it still is sad to hear of the incompetence of the people in charge of providing the clean safe water we pay for. Glad to be a subscriber of your chanel and keep up the good work.

This video is enlightening as well as frightening. I am a marine biologist and science teacher as well as a fish enthusiast (have 4 tanks in my house) and to think that not only fish but we can be endanger due to lack of acknowledgement that there is a problem is scary to say the least. Thank you for making this video, I will take extra precautions when drinking water as well as doing a water change! Cheers!

Ole lady here enjoying your videos. I think not trusting our water is a valid piece of advice WHEREVER you live, every day of the year. Fish (though we love them) serve as the canary in the cole mine.....we are next if we are not careful. I have restarted my fish and planted tank hobby and will definitely heed this advice. Some advice from me: Get rid of your chronic sinus issues and get your sense of smell back by quitting ALL dairy (dairy based ice creme, cheese, milk) and stopping using over the counter deodorants and products containing aluminum. I could not smell for most of my life and always had a sinus thing......then I quit dairy and aluminum. Now I can smell perfume across the room.......So much better for you!

How much of 300 angelfish lost? Compared with $200 home RO water maker. People even use RO water for serious aquascape. Some areas people don't get right water for tropical fishes, they have to use RO.
@trevorpowell4851
@trevorpowell4851 7 жыл бұрын
angels are bread in ph ranges far beyond there origins, with great success. by using RO water you have stripped the water of anything beneficial and made a real headache for your self. You should have just bought them from a locally raised source and been done with it.
@trevorpowell4851
@trevorpowell4851 7 жыл бұрын
This is why the Local fish store is so vital to the hobby, they buy from local breeders that match your water parameters but people are to stupid to realize this. and they don't buy fish from there local fish store. hence the demise of the stocking. In fact some fish can't be kept if they were not locally raised with out a lot of effort.But apparently you failed to realize this.

I'm in south florida... seems we have it the worst. I can remember even as a kid some 40 years ago on a vacation here from boston, I could smell and taste the chlorine in tap water. Now that I live here, once in awhile I'll be able to smell it from the tap, and get paranoid using it for my tanks. I keep larger fish, so I assume their tolerance is higher, but thanks so much for sharing this.... we never stop to realize that we're relying on the water company and their systems to not fail us... an obvious mistake on our part. Thanks again, great video!

So sorry for your loss! I hope you get some reimbursement, at least. I recently toured a waste water treatment plant in Milwaukie, Oregon for one of my classes (not the city I live in, but fairly close) and the water is cleaned with UV sterilizers, with chlorine as a back up but is rarely ever used. So glad that my local water is treated with UV.

Just saw your video, sorry for your loss. I hope you got every penny you could wring out of them! Where I used to live we had city water, I can't even begin to count how many times I would flush the toilet and be hit with a strong scent of chlorine! It got to the point that my family would go get water from a friends well( best water ever) I always made sure that for major water changes I had plenty of the well water on hand. For smaller changes I would use the tap water but I would first run the water for a few minutes then I would fill my buckets, and add a good amount of chlorine eliminator. If I had the option and this is what I recommend every fish keeper who lives on city water should do! You need to install a whole house chlorine/contaminate filter! (Make sure it's a whole house and not a under sink system) This simple addition to your homes plumbing will drastically reduce/ eliminate the chlorine coming into your house. It will also make things safer for your family as chlorine at the levels that were mentioned above is paramount to opening a bottle of bleach and chugging it. Personally I would be talking to a lawyer and putting a report in to the EPA as theirs no way their going to self report. Not having a failsafe in place on those pumps could have done serious damage to anyone who drank that water. If theirs one thing I have learned is to trust no one, and pre-filter the crap( pun intended) out of my water!

Hey Mike, That's a crazy story. I hope you end up getting reimbursed for their mistakes. I ran into a water treatment plant issue a while back while living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I was in Salisbury and the water out of the tap has 33.8ppm of Nitrate (results from doctor at Salisbury University in Summer of 2011)! The legal limit is 44pm at which point it becomes toxic to infants and the elderly. Blue Baby Syndrome, etc. I was getting readings between 40-80ppm on my API Master Test kit and had a doctor at Salisbury University test the water with a much more reliable system to test. I called the water plant to inform them but the people I was speaking to weren't very responsive. They kept telling me their tests were returning 5ppm of Nitrate. I ended up sending a letter to the mayor and getting the doctor, who knows the mayor, to help highlight to problem. I moved not too long after this all happened and I never got to see it through. The entire Eastern Shore of Maryland is loaded with farms and has a lot of run off. The rivers in the area are loaded with algae and have oxygen dead zones from it. It's a serious issue. Good luck man! I hope they resolve this mess. The way the water companies regulate our water is mind blowing. It's frustrating and negligent.

I think the same thing is happening here in my apt, in Manhattan. Right after I do a water change, the fish swim upto the top of the tank and/or become listless. I use Prime and I'm being as careful as I can to keep water temp equal within the water changes. Haven't tested my water for chlorine yet. Still, very scared of making changes now. Had over 10 fish (mostly live bearers and a few gourmies) die off on me., within a few weeks.

I didnt notice if you have any planted/dirted tanks, if so you should make a video, nice editing you got my sub. When you get some nice double darks ill surely hit ya up for a shipment. One question- have u used blackwater extract w the angels? Years ago I swore by the stuff... It seemed to work wonders for inducing spawning as wel as overall health (and I swear it even cut aggression) but it seems to be a thing of the past and isnt carried in stores like it once was...

Hi how are you? Happy New year I started getting into freshwater fish and exotic shrimp breeding about a year and some change ago and you've been a really big help with figuring out how to get a proper divider because my two koi angelfish have been going at it mainly the female and the male just takes it. his eye on one side is already red from her beatings. I have been searching away to stop it as soon as possible I'm going to start building that mesh divider in a previous video you made and it's very interesting about the water levels being so high poor animals. I didn't know that. I'm having a bit of trouble of my own with my water in my 75 gallon freshwater tank with the pH and I have some clown loaches and koi angelfish and different types of tetras. One of my 7 clown loaches wasn't developing the fins and size like the others and then it started growing a belly and I knew something was wrong (so I quarantined it with him for 7 days). Unfortunately it did not survive. Is that common? I heard clown loaches can be one of the first susceptible to any type of bacteria or fungus in the tank. Thanks you, M.

Our water company in a small north ft. worth suburb started doing work on the pipes around the city about august last year. I had run out of testing strips and just shrugged it off since our water was really stable and my tank had been cycled for over 6 months. I wasn't paying attention untill i woke up one morning and found my flame dwarf gourami, two of my 3 mollies, and all my platys in my 60 and 10 laying on their sides on the bottom of the tank. Did another water change and they all died as well as all but 2 fish in one of tanks. Grabbed a test kit and found out that the amount of ammonia in the tap water was 4ppm, and nitrates were well over 140ppm. God only knows what the chlorine was at. I now buy my water from my LFS. They are a good group with huge really good filtering systems. I only have 3 tanks so it come out to about $12 a week for the same water they use when they water change. So if something were jacked they'd see a problem first. and I still test it before it goes in my tanks. Been there, it sucks. Sorry for the loss.

Oh wow, that is rough. Those poor fish! What a horrible way to go:c I remember last spring I had an issue with my local water. Something was off because in the course of a single water-change the nitrates in my tank spiked through the roof. Killed a lot of my more sensitive fish, and I felt so helpless. It hurt too, I had spent a lot of time raising batch after batch of young Botia loaches, and building up a strong loach community in my 125. I had a strong community of Elephant Noses as well in another tank. I never contacted the water company (I regret that). I figured out that the level of Chloromine in the water must have gone up. Water changes and triple doses of Safe just lead to sky-rocking nitrates. If the Chloro level went up, that would make sense. The safe would have broken part it down into Ammonium. High Chloro turns into high Ammonium, which turns into high nitrates. So I worked with my work and we got a hefty Purification system with two nice chambers for a super high grade carbon that targets Chloromine(and a sediment filter too). I have not had issues since. I now warn anyone that comes to my work that if they want to keep sensitive fish at home (fresh-side) they really need to purify their water. Everyone where I am seems to have issues with high nitrates unless they purify their water. It's not that they are over-feeding, under-filtering, or not water changing. It's the water company. At work I now use RO water for any tanks with sensitive FW fish, because they thrive better. If I use dechlorinated tap water...they don't thrive. Don't know how helpful this information was but that was my experience.

If they were increasing the chlorine amount in the water supply, why didn't they inform residents of the increase before they did it? Yeah. Equipment fails from time to time. Although they really should have notified if the chlorine introduction pump failed and over dosed the water supply. They should have made a public alert about it. Should always test your water as a good practice before using it on fish or plants. Treatment plants have equipment failures from time to time and yeah... they go unreported.

This exact thing happened to 3 of my tanks yesterday. Killed a group of Lemon tetras and Emperor tetras. Almost wiped out our mated pair of Chocolate cichlids and a group of orange laser cories. Of course, the utility company denies anything different in the water. They were more concerned with my fish keeping skills. I've only been doing this for 16 years...I think I know how to do water changes by now.

Meant to add I lost my beloved fire eel to Chloramine after raising her for nearly a decade. Did a normal water change, her skin started sloughing off... did more thinking there was a gas issue in her sand, and killed her because all I had on hand was de-chlorinating stuff, I had no idea Chloramine was even a thing. Found out 3 months later from a lady that had multiple koi ponds that around the same time her fish started reacting like mine, same things ... almost immediate gasping at the surface, turning red at gills and find, etc. She learned that our city had added Chloramine after they denied changing anything several times ...and that's when I learned about Chloramine and that it will never evaporate and that a dechlorinater will not remove or deactivate it. Prime is supposed to remove that though, do maybe it wasn't the problem ...

I 100% agree with everything said, for what its worth, here in a certain city in California.....the PH will fluctuate from time to time which is why it is vital to test your water not only for your fishes sake but also your family's as well. It amazes me that there isn't some type of inline alarm that is reading the chlorine levels being introduced to your tap water to alert the utility company of dangerous levels, and they wait on a call?? haha its too late at that point. Furthermore i think your being modest with wanting $900 reimbursement for the angels...either way i hope everything works out for you and good luck to you bud.

Ya. It's crazy. They are still within there timeframe to handle this correctly. The chlorine levels violates the safe water drinking act that the EPA enforces. They have 30 days to inform the public. We will see. As far as my reimbursement.... A law suite for that small amount of money isn't worth it. I'd spend more for an attorney and have to add on costs. For people that could have been made sick... They need to know. Thanks. The video was easy. I just made sure I looked pretty rough for the first part. Then I shaved and changed and reshot. The clips run right into each other so it looks like an immediate transformation. Lol just trying to keep the videos interesting.

+Mike's Fish Room I don't know, we never called or complained about it because it's a common "issue" with city water. But normally we are able to just detoxify it in one dose of prime, it took three doses to get it to calm down but by then the damage was already done, we believe it was a Flux that happened at the wrong time that killed them, because my 5 gallon planted tank had a water change mabey 30 mins before and nothing happened. It was definitely chlorine though because all the water levels were perfect and the chlorine Flux was already a common problem so I'm positive it was that. I just didn't know if you lived close to me or something because it seemed so coincidental

Just watched your video as someone who works for a public water treatment plant I can tell you that cl2 that high for that long is nuts. By law we have to test water quality every two hours. It has to be put on a sheet that copies are sent to our state EPA at the end of every month. These lab sheets are public records ask for them. Don't know what state your in I'm in Georgia but I don't think regulations would be to different. Hope this helps I'm sorry you have had this problem.

As far as the plant I work at we make rounds checking pumps 3 times in a 12 hour shift and have so many alarms for Cl2 and turbidity its crazy. We keep our cl2 at around 2.1-2.2 after filters and 1.5 leaving the plant. Hope this experience has not soured you to bad on tap water some of us take our responsibility very serious and I'm sure some of the employees at your plant does to.

Every once in a while, in the shower, there is an obvious and overwhelming chemical/chlorine smell....and I have a special chlorine filter on my shower head. Very obvious spikes for whatever reason. Our water from Lake Erie is usually pretty good, but I never use it for my fish or for drinking, without letting it sit until the chlorine evaporates. I also filter my drinking water. I have 10 gallon aquariums that I use to store my water for water changes for my aquariums. I aerate it and keep it at aquarium temperature and let all the chlorine evaporate out over a number of days or even a week before I use it. No, I don't trust the water company with my health or that of my fish. Thanks for the video!
