I might do this and use it as a hide away when I need some space! Pillows, blankets and a curtain should do it.

Thank you! Doing garage shelving this week and I learned a simple but great idea from you - to pre-install the cross pieces on to the back-end 2x4 before fastening the back end to the wall studs, eliminating the need for pocket holes.

On my last garage that had 10ish foot ceilings, I built shelves/racks for all my extra lumber and sheets of plywood. Saved a ton of space. The plywood was good for me because all i had was extra osb, but if you had different kinds of plywood, then getting to the lower sheets would be difficult. As for stick lumber, it was perfect because I kept them sorted by size.

Thanks for sharing this video. I'm working on a similar project, and this showed up in my feed. I did basically the same thing, but mine is 8' tall, 16' wide, and 30"deep (4 shelves). It's designed to accommodate totes. I completely built out the frames on the floor and used load straps as a make-shift pully system to hoist the shelves into place. I'm using 19/32 OSB for shelf material. I used mostly scrap 2x4s for the 24" on center supports. Other than the supports, making cuts was minimal because I used 16' and 8' 2x4s. I'll rip the OSB and use the remaining for other 18" shelves. Yours looks very nice and sturdy. Because mine is so wide, I'm adding toggle bolts to the back side for added strength. I might do a couple of your hanging shelves as well.

I like the preparation of measuring and pre-drilling the holes on all the pieces - some relative to the ceiling joists/truces and some relative to the wall studs, some to the frame of the rack. Then pre-installing the right screws/lag bolts in the right places. Pre-assembling what makes sense in each case. Very simple and efficient. Nicely done!

Thank you Rick! I agree, the pre-drilling and pre-assembly is a good method for limiting mistakes. This method has worked well for me.

Smart leaving the front 2x4 off until mounted, dropping the weight by about 1/3. I would suggest filling an area (taking the shelf the rest of the way to the window and overhanging all the width to the edge of the garage door opening) because you will want the space sooner or later anyway. I would also recommend more head clearance than 6'1". I have a little concern with how it is tied into the ceiling. I like to bolt a single drop into the ceiling joists and the front shelf support board. To get joist access, I cut out a small square in the ceiling drywall, then use molding to frame it back in like an attic access panel and let the drywall rest on the molding. This also has an advantage of needing fewer drops from the ceiling.

Very nice. Thank you for sharing! If high torque and stripping screw head is a concern, could consider using socket-drive hex head bolts instead. To avoid the hex head sticking out from the 2x4, can drill a slightly wider hole to recess the hex head. Doing so also allow you to drive a much longer & beefier bolt through the shelf’s base frame. Even if you put really heavy stuff on the shelf, don’t need to worry about over loading the screws.

@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Not at all. Glad to be of help. 😎 Thank you for sharing your tips. I came across this same problem when tackling "how to anchor firearm cabinet to wall stud", specifically against burglars crow bar attack. After a lot of search, high-torque socket-driven bolt was the only thing that appeared strong enough. Buried it 3" into the wall stud. The additional length to account for dry wall, space-block, the cabinet thickness, and a massive washer, made the final bolt length (4.5") look humongous. Something that massive, need to pre-drill the wall stud, so don't risk splitting the stud itself. I have that project video on my channel if you're interested.

Good job. During stay at home I was just recovering from a stroke and had just felt confident getting out on my own. So I worked on the property. I am looking for ideas for garage organization. Thanks for the tips. Again, good video and new subscriber here.

I did that (hanging shelves) in an old mobile home I use for storage here, only I used mostly 2x2's. Being that I gutted the inside, I built 2x4 braces (up the walls with a 2x4 joist on the ceiling) every 10', and then added a 10' joist between them 18" off the walls. Then used 2x2's for the shelves and hanging straps ( with the occasional 2x4 hanger. That was over ten years ago, and never had an issue with them. btw, built/planned it all in sketchup beforehand. Which allowed me to experiment with different ideas without ever cutting a single piece of wood.

Good to know that it worked out well for you Mat! Sounds like that sketchup program is pretty handy for this type of designing. Thanks for sharing!
