Do it yourself hard drive repair and data recovery on a Seagate 750GB hard drive. **WARNING** This is NOT recommended for situations where you are trying to recover critical, irreplaceable data. The chances of permanent data loss are extremely high. In this video we show you the process for transplanting hard disk platters from a hard drive with a damaged spindle motor. We made an effort to do this using simple tools to show that it could be done. We DO NOT recommend this method at all for those who have important data that needs to be recovered.
Please note, this process only works with 7200.10 model Seagate hard drives. Do not attempt on any other model Seagate drive, or any other brand hard drive...especially Western Digital.
Hard drive data recovery is much more involved than what can be shown in simple videos like this. Professional data recovery requires the ability to not only properly diagnose your failed hard drive, but also having the right equipment.
Clean rooms for data recovery are not as critical as having the proper knowledge and experience. In addition, having proper software for imaging is crucial. After the platter swap in this video, this is absolutely no way this drive would have been accessible on a computer, no matter how it was attached. The drive had many areas where it really struggled to image completely, and our Deepspar Disk Imager is one of the few tools on the market that intuitively knows how to handle unreadable sectors without pushing the hard drive to its limit.

I just did this with a 4tb WD Passport. The white plastic head divider just clicks back while keeping the heads separated. You can pull the filter and put the tape on pretty well. I transferred all of the disks pretty easily. Unfortunately, the top platter was too damaged for the new head to read. Still, not bad for learning on KZfaq. Good video.

The first thing I saw when I opened the drive was one of the tiny head sliders on the platter. After looking at the head I found the there were no sliders on it at all. Not only did I have to remove the platters but I also had to find the sliders. WHere were the sliders? All on the platters. Everything went back together and the drive worked, after I got a new head.

Impressive work, impressive skill. You're very confident and you dont shake hands at the most intense and delicate parts, respect. I wondered some question during watching: 1)What dont you use magnetic screwdriver to screw/unscrew so you dont take the risk to let a screw fall on the platter? 2)Where where you when you did the whole process? It seems not a clean room? Is it a normal room or have something special to limit the amount of dust? Which place/room and equipement would you recommend to do some DIY HDD repair at the best? 3)I see you comment you work afterwards, its not live comments, right? The action of talking and open mouth could lead to dust contamination or not? Thank you for sharing.

TSpider Keeper That's correct. We use a laminar flow hood. It creates a high pressure area of filtered air, which prevents "dirty" air from entering the work area. We aren't working with DNA so we aren't worried about contaminants, and in actual recovery work we will generally use a suit as well, but we don't in demonstration videos. If you have a newer drive that is non-functional, you should open in it. You'd be surprised at how much dirt and contamination we find in drives...especially newer drives. I'm surprised some of them work at all, it's ridiculous how much dust is in them.

In some cases a platter move is not necessary! Replacement of the reader head or arm can fix a non reading issue., some times. If there's no platter damage and your platter motor works. Impacts can damage both the platter and your reader heads. I love this video and this can work in extreme conditions. But it's not always necessary!✌️

The other day, I bumped my laptop into a wall while walking into another room. For the next week or two, it would freeze about 30 minutes after turning it on and being usable. I think I may have scratched the disk by jarring the laptop so hard. For my solution, I re-installed ubuntu and put the whole OS at the end of the drive and only made it 350 GB instead of the available 750gb. I also put the swap at the end too, and only left the boot manager which is like 50 mb at the start of the disk. What I was trying to do was put the data in a part of the disk that I suspected was not damaged. So far, my laptop has been running fine for three days straight and I have had no issues with freezing or slowness like I did before. My partition manager shows that 350 GB is unused from the start of the disk and then after that, my new Primary partition starts. Do you think my methodology work? I've heard that the drive doesn't physically do what I was trying to do (which was install the OS 'past' the damaged area), but rather the drive/system puts files where ever space is available. I am using Linux Ubuntu 14.04 and this method seemingly has worked! I just wonder for how long before the system just starts writing into those bad areas... lol thanks for any help you can offer.

Sounded llike the procedure was that intense, like launching a shuttle. It would be cool to get a couple junk drives, that work initially of course and try out these procedures to try to do it successfully. I would love to see HowToBasic try data recovery.

Would I have to move the platters to a another drive or is there something I can do to get the platters to move? Thanks. The data is not that serious but I'd like to try after I saw this and it just happens to be the exact same drive. I brought a replacement drive for the swap if need be from Newegg.

Great video, but would like some additional advise. I have two identical Seagate 7200.07 (ST3160828AS) drives , one good/one bad. Can I simply swap platters from one to the other by not removing the head assembly and just removing head assembly hardstop and swing the assembly clockwise which presumably would allow enough clearance for a platter swap? If not, and I have to remove the head assembly, would it be easier to use the head assembly plastic comb used for parking the heads to secure the heads rather than the bent plastic shims (I will have one extra since I have a second drive)? Alternatively, would you estimate it is easier to swap the platters from one drive to another or swap the head assembly? thanks in advance.

This may be a stupid question, but if I have a 500Gb HDD with a crashed head, will a head from a 1TB one work in its place ? Same make and model obviously (Seagate for the record), but once I carry the head over to the bad drive, must the firmware and capacity also match ?
@acsdata
@acsdata 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel's Game Vault We have used heads from larger capacity drives to recover data, but there are other parameters that have to match up. If the head swap goes without issue, which it most likely won't, the firmware will deactivate the heads that aren't needed.

What happens if you drop something onto the first platter.. A few months back, before I saw this video. I opened up my old Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 IDE HDD and while I was opening it up, the sticky insulation on the edges fell off of the top metal onto half of the platter and it went on the head. No matter how careful I was trying to lift that rubber, It bent the whole head. I now have another same exact hard drive and I want to swap heads. I'm not really willing to send this to data recovery because I don't know what files are on there. You guys think that I will be able to get some data off of it still? If so, wanna make a DIY head swap for a similar HDD?

i am getting ready to attempt this same swap and will be using the hand made plastic inserts to open the heads b4 moving them off the platters. i have made a practice move of the heads (Iomega 500GB External Drive) and find that the heads to not move all the way off the platters, but stop on the edge, making it impossible to remove the platters unless I remove the heads completely. I am hoping to not have to do that. I want to move the heads of both sets of platters from 2 identical drives, and then swap the platters. Can someone advise if there is a way to get the heads all the way off the platters w/o having to remove them physically from the drive?

The one thing missing is what software you would use for imaging: as you probably don't have a Deepspar at home, the closest thing you can have is GNU ddrescue 1.19 or newer, preferably with ddrutility and the passthrough patch. If possible, use a PCI-based or onboard SATA port, and not an USB device - that way ddrescue will have better control over what ATA commands get sent out to the drive.
@acsdata
@acsdata 9 жыл бұрын
NetRolller3D Skip to the 40min mark. All we use are Deepspar Imagers, and we have multiple systems in place. This particular example is just a demo that we did with an old drive one night, not an actual case. And yes, you definitely need something more than off the shelf software after an involved process like this. That is one point I bring up...even if you do this at home...most likely you aren't going to have the ability to get a clean image of the drive, because they operate in such a degraded state afterwards.

I can only assume the other platters will have likewise been damaged

Great work. Amazing the drive read any data at all. Did you spend more time trying to image the drive? If so, how much data did you recover? I've opened two throw-away drives, looked around, then put the cover back on, and they worked. I wouldn't use either drive for anything serious after opening. No clean room or air cleaner hood. I was lucky. I'm totally serious about backing up my data. Nice to know data recovery services are out there, but good backups make these services unnecessary.

I know this one might be a bit off-topic, but IF you wanted the convenience of a physical switch, single pole, so that you could (when the computer is OFF) swap to a second HDD within the machine, how easy would that be?

I lost music lyric that I wrote on a toshiba 500GB portable usb 3.0 hard-drive and over leaving the faulty hard-drive plugged in my computer ended up having complete freeze glitches... any theories on that? I thought it was a firmware glitch so I pulled the solidstate drive I had hooked up internally when it froze and it rebooted and I've had no issues like it since..

Thanks for the video. 1st question: Once you had affixed the first larger piece of packing tape to the platters, what kept you from spinning the platters so that you could affix a second large piece of tape instead of squeezing the small pieces onto the opposite side? 2nd question: Would you be able to voice over that last part between about 47 and 51? Your audio drops considerably along in there. Thanks again. B.

+William Brown There are spacers between the platters that are anchored to the drive chassis. The small pieces fit into a tiny gap in those spacers on the opposite side.

+acsdata well you almost made me cry, I was about to try this to my 2011 Western Digital 1TB HDD which I bought late 2012 :(. I am sure my motor is not spinning up. I am not sure what all data I have in that drive and if its worth to invest in data recovery.
