My Homemade / DIY Drill Mount Rock Crusher for small batch sampling.
Just a regular grinder and all-thread rod mounted to a drill. Work real good.

I dug a hole with a post hole digger, put a coffee can in (not as sturdy as your utensil holder), jammed a couple of rocks between the hole and the can to hold it steady, and that worked to stabilize it. I had been using chains on a paint stirrer but that isn't working well enough so I'm buying the grinder head and the dog dish. I cut the shaft on the paint stirrer for more stability. You can take the container right out of the hole and pour it wherever you want. When the container gets chewed through, buy another!

That could work very well on a large drill press with a shorter rod. a place to bolt it down on the table, clamp the lid on, and added power of the press. That would be the cat’s arse, for grinding.

That's a fantastic idea! After perusing the various fab and angle grinder pseudo impact mill constructions, I came back to your cup wheel idea and think it'll do the job for my needs. I'm trying to flake and powderize anthracite for much different purposes but on a backyard DIY budget. I have a few 'previously projected' stock pots, though I think I'm going to go old pressure cooker pot that at one time turned into a pressure vessel for degassing for the thicker walls and the gasket. Just wanted to come back and definitely add a kudos for the idea! 👍

Looks like it worked pretty good...two suggestions, 1) Cut your threaded rod in half...lenght would still be enough to do the work, and a shorter rod would give you less flexibility, less chance of the rod to buckle or bend, possibly even snap, and shorter would be stouter. 2) Find a way to make your stainless steel bucket stationary...not using your feet...save you some possible pain and embarrassment in the future...other than that, I liked it and will subscribe!

This is a wonderfull idea! As it is shown in the video its a bit slow even compared to crushing rock in a metal tube with a hammer or a pestle. Also the ammount you can crush at one go is a bit small even compared to a mortar and pestle. But by now you most likely have worked those kinks out im sure. After all this video is two years old. Very nice indeed. I will give that method a try for sure.

This works great for Hard but Granular Rock like Quartz, but not so good for Shale, Schist or Dense Sandstone. It does work but takes forever and the Nut tends to hang up on the Rocks in the Middle causing the bit to spin without cutting.

there's always room for improvement, but you did a great job under a minute. And I suppose you could put that same powder stuff back in there and grind it even further. That sounded like a hammer drill? yeah you might want to put a tube around your threading just in case it breaks. And I suppose you could put a shorter rod on it too, and built on to a countertop. Great idea though. I wonder how long that head last list real hard rock like quartz? thanks again

Great idea using a grinder wheel. Pour yourself a slab using the stainless to make a hole and embed a few hooks or latches to secure the lid. I see crap flying everywhere and it's killing me. That will also protect you incase a stone rips through the side of the stainless which one eventually will. As for using a shorter threaded rod I don't agree. I'd say maybe a black steel pipe with grease inside or something similar to support the bending/flexing. You don't want to be leaning over doing this all the time with a shorter shaft. There has to be some sort of bolt on flange out there to solve the nut binding issue. I was using a think stainless pestle with a pipe stuff in it and another pipe with a welded end as a ram rod but the pestle had a blow out today so looking for an alternative. Might try this. Thanks

@@DuaneTheOakHirst I'm no expert and aside from the safety and the flying debris I think your idea is awesome and one of the best I've seen. I was just looking to see what I have already to do something very similar after I saw your vid. Smashing rocks is a whole lot of work and anything that makes the process easier without paying an arm and a leg I'm very happy to see. I saw a couple videos where people were heating rocks until they glowed red then cooling them down with ice to make them brittle before smashing. Doesn't work for all rocks but it did for the majority of the ones I tried it out on. If combined with your idea it sure would go a hell of a lot faster. Especially when you get to those rocks that don't become brittle. Maybe you could do another video and test it?

Half inch emt is measures on the inside of the pipe (for "wire fill" calculations) AKA ID. The pipe goes inside of the fitting, so 1/2in.+ watt thickness×2 would be the ID of the fitting. Besides he mentioned TWICE that he had to boar it out. So ya it's a 1/2 in emt set screw connector.
