Learn to make your own hoop earrings or wine charm ring findings! In this step-by-step tutorial, you'll learn the right kind of wire to use for this project, how to prepare the wire, and how to shape the hoop.
Then I'll show you how to work harden your hoop earring for strength, and we'll finish the ends off so they're nice and smooth to put in your ears. When your hoop earrings are finished, you can wear them as is, or attach a charm or dangle for a totally different look!
For wine charms, attach whatever charms you'd like to use in various colors :)

Going to try this with 16g because that's the size of my piercing and I am sad that I haven't been able to wear cute hoops! Thankfully I have a lot of wire sitting around that I can mess up.

I love how easy this looks to make...but how do we put this into our ears for earrings? Do we need to make a loop on the other straight end and attach an earring hook?

+Lillian Russo Hi Lillian! The little bent part at the end will go into your ear. You don't want to bend it too much or it becomes awkward - about a 45 degree angle is good :)

Can I use memory wire for this project since I already have it n use it to make earrings?

Hi Lenita! If your memory wire is a size you like for your earrings then you can try it for hoops. It's a lot harder to make the small loops and bend the wire but you will not have to do any hardening. The only thing I would really worry about is being able to smooth the end that goes into the ear - maybe try that first and see if it will file down easily. Have fun!

Thanks, Jess, very useful tut! I love your tutorials and I'll get to watching the ones I actually paid for one of these days, yikes! *facepalm* Two questions: 1. I understand why this needs to be harder wire. Can I work-harden the dead soft wire I already have for this, or do I really need to buy half-hard? 2. An unrelated question - do you have a recommendation for a pair of needle nose-ish flush cutters? I find I my Lindstroms can't do the job in close quarters when I want to trim ends. Thanks so much!

+RobinInSeoul Hey there - so glad to see you here! You can go through the lessons in the class at your own pace, so you don't have to do the whole thing at once. You should definitely check it out - I think you'll really get a lot out of it :) 1. Yes - BUT it will take a LOT more hammering, so be prepared for that. It will seem like you're hammering forever. If you plan to make a lot of these hoop earrings, a better option might be to use a tumbler to work harden them instead! 2. My #1 favorite flush cutters are Tronex. They have a super fine tip. amzn.to/1PUS9jW (yes, they're quite pricey but they're absolutely amazing). Model 5223 and 7223 are the same tool but with different length handles (5223= standard "short" handles, 7223 = long handles) My 2nd recommendation (and a much more economical option) are the Xuron Micro Shear flush cutters: amzn.to/1SHnCFi Hope that helps! why would you do that and then cut..why not measure exactly to the size need and then cut.. seems strange to me..like double handling..

Great question, Sarah! While it can certainly be done that way, it's a million times easier to shape the wire when you have the extra length to pull it around the mandrel. If you cut it exactly to the length you need first, you'll have a much harder time shaping it so that it forms a nice circle. The ends take a lot more force to push down than they do to pull around...hope that makes sense. If you try it both ways I think you'll see what I mean!

Why do you use the rubber mallet?

Hi Mary! The rubber mallet (or rawhide mallet) is used to 'work harden' the wire so that the hoop holds it shape better. A regular metal hammer will also work harden the wire but it would flatten it at the same time. So if you don't want to flatten the wire but you need to make it stronger, you would use a rubber or rawhide mallet. Does that help?
