DIY jeweler’s bench

I’m use to a European style bench, which has a cutout and an apron for catching tings. I’m making the cutout an ellipse, as a round cutout will take too much of the table space. The shape of the ellipse can be calculated (Khan academy has some good videos on that) or you can just experiment your way to a suitable design.
The table is a used IKEA drawing table I found used for about 50 kr or about $8 us.
The bench apron is from my old bench. It can be quit expensive, but you can make it yourself from a secondhand leather jacket.
Then a little cold pressed linseed oil.
Still a bit wobbly, but a furniture bracket attached to the beam will fix that.

Good bench for the cost Oliver ! Thanks you for the video - that style bench would be very useful for clockwork and other small work too I drop things easily and like the apron to catch them instead of looking on the floor.

Quite a bit cheaper to go to a wholesale leather supply for the bench apron. You can generally find something of the appropriate size that is a leftover cutoff. They'll even put the grommets in for you if you want. A diagonal cross brace across the back would instantly get rid of the wobble.

Probably. I wish we had one around here, but... I solved the wobble by screwing it to the wall. ;-)

Would you say this table is sturdy when piercing/sawing? It seemed like it was wobbly when you were applying the linseed oil..

Nop, it is too flimsy. I have added a bracket and fastened it to the wall.

Great video! Thank you! One question, which shape of leather do you use? Is any pattern or some advice to make this peace?

Thank you. :-) It is sort of two hour glass shapes on top of each other with two big notches at bottom of the apron and two smaller ones to lift the front edge. My advice is to make a template in a cheap fabric and adjust it to your cutout. Thanks for watching!

Good to hear. 🙂 I made it a long time ago without a template. You can.make a template from a plastic garbage bag and cut the leather after that.

What do you mean you've "been allowed to use a small corner in your house" to make your jewelry? That doesn't seem quite fair.

It was a temporary house we rented while building our new one (which has a big workshop) and the kids didn't even have their own rooms, so I was happy just to get a corner. ;-)
