I'm always so impressed when people like your good self come up with such professional solutions. You may think it's cheating but I would recommend the Hobie outriggers that I use on my Hobie Sport. They're expensive but light and flexible and do a good job. Cheers, Frank

Nice work! I am currently designing a small lateen rig (similar to a Sunfish sail) for my Ocean Kayak Trident 11. I plan to build a new hatch cover out of plywood that will have a socket for the mast built in and a shaft for a pair of leeboards that kick up. I have a rudder on mine, but the blade may be a bit small for sailing. Videos like yours are very encouraging!

Check out "Leeboards" They are common in home-built boats, especially the Puddle Duck Racer and stitch and glue type sailboats. Leeboards simplify construction of the hull, as they are attached to the outside and do not require holes in the hull as with centerboards, which can leak. I had small 7.5 foot oak/canvas covered sailboat w/ lateen sail (lowered center of gravity) and leeboards and it was stable and efficient.

You're getting pushed around pretty good without a board. Add a 'lee board' off the side. It'll keep you from getting pushed sideways as well as a centerboard- but you won't have to put a hole in the boat! It'll have to go more or less where the is. It won't add much stability though. You'll need those outriggers for that with a sail that big. Or some mighty quick reflexes! Zip ties will be stronger than shower curtain rings.

Great job! I’m about to do the same except with two identical kayaks joined as a catamaran. You definitely need a daggerboard or centerboard to maintain staying upright & to keep from sliding.

I've seen some boat designs that have a dagger board on either side of the boat, rather than a center board that takes up cockpit space and penetrates the hull. You could probably make a dagger that you could move from one side of the kayak to the other without much trouble.

@thewetturd I think a centerboard is needed to add more stability, but I have zero sailing experience, so I could be wrong!

Lee board may help but I would stay with triangle, I try rectangle but had same prob , your configuration will work good on heavy canoe , I love the way you raise the sail with the PVC "T

Im adding a sail yo my kayak too but I want to remove the mast while underway if I need top.

Cool idea! What are you going to do when the hull starts filling with water from the hatch being open and your yak starts sinking? You gotta seal that hull as well as stuff a bunch of pool noodles in there to help when it leaks and starts to sink. Almost happened to a buddy of mine out on lake Erie while we were walleye fishing a few miles off shore.

Nice work..You need some sail battens to get the Aerofoil shape on your sail

you need side boards keep you from tipping and keep you going straight

You should build a steering system to tun the sail so you have more control over it.

Awesome Rig! I've been thinking of modifying something similar for years on my yak. Do you think that if you add surface area to your rudder it will give you more stability like a keel does on a sailboat?

Were you ever able to tack against the wind or was this kayak sail strictly for when the wind was more toward your back.

@ruta9 Let me know when you get your sail done. I had never heard of Gustavo Cordera. I do look like him! That's the third famous person I've been told that I look like, Chris Elliott and Anthony Edwards too. Depends on how I trim my beard I guess.

You can use an oar as a leeboard and attach it to the same frame as your sail rig. Check out my vids.
