You might want to try yesterday's newspaper. Takes a bit longer to soak (boiling hot water helps to speed up the proces). Since your using a handmixer it shouldn't make much of a difference.

Should we add a few tsp of lysol to keep any mold growth down from using tap water? Love your ideas! My adult daughter is a budding artist and she was thrilled to find this recipe, as am i! Peace, Grace

I don't think you added one part glue and one part gesso to the two parts of toilet paper. It looked like one part mostly glue with a bit of gesso. Can you clarify?
