Looks great! Maybe try black plexiglass so you don’t see the wires. It’s nice to see you’re using a coping saw and not some $10,000.00 laser on the plexiglass. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! I've been wanting an 80s food court/mall inspired neon sign set for years and nobody sells anything like it so I was like "fine I'll do it myself" but have no idea how to solder and it scares me, so thank you for this!! I can finally have my squiggly lines and geometric shape lights :)

I will definitely be attempting this soon! Been wanting to make one for AGES and this just gave me the motivation I needed. I'm just concerned with how I can cut the plexiglass with no tool and also knowing where to cut and make connections in my design as well as what to use to cut the holes to bring the wires through the back. Hmm 🤔 I need to find a wire that I can change the colors and brightness as well
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, You can also make your design around the shape of plexiglass you get. Most come in a rectangle shape. I have seen people make them with out cutting the plexiglass or you can outline the rectangle with LED neon lights as a border. Just throwing some options I have seen. Where to cut and make connections is easiest when you draw it on paper first and look at where it is best to cut and where you maybe dont need to cut and get away with it. To cut a hole through the plexiglass for the wire, you will most likely need a drill depending on your design. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi, what machine did you use to cut the plexiglass?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
@@dmeeksy Hi thanks for watching. The machine I used to cut the plexiglass was a scroll saw. But I know you can use a couple of things to cut plexi glass. The main thing is the plexi glass cant be too thin. Thin plexiglass can crack easy when cutting due to the strong vibrations of the tools. If you do attempt to cut thin plexiglass cut slow and support it as best as you can. The thickness of this one I cut was .220 and it cut it easy.

Certainly not with that mindset! I'd avoided learning mechanics for years because I was so sure I couldn't do anything besides the most basic maintenance. Learned helplessness, basically. Hit a rough patch a couple years ago where I flat couldn't afford a mechanic, but my water pump went out. Had the tools, had just enough for the kit, had no choice but to give it a go. I've now replaced the water pump/timing belt, power steering pump, alternator, spark plugs, and did a valve adjustment with nothing but a field service manual, KZfaq videos, and some relevant forum posts. My car runs like a dream again despite being at 268k miles. Don't sell yourself short. It's not magic, as mystical as it can seem before you push yourself to start.

@@MakerDecor I have a question, how do you know where to cut and connect with the font you use?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor Жыл бұрын
@@zeronouveau Really I dont, I just kind of plan it out as I go. The first sign I made I cut and connected a lot. So with this one I tried to avoid making so many cut and connections. So where I felt I could get away with just bending the wire, I did. So like the "e" I just folded it instead of cutting it to save time. It does look better with more cuts and connections, but this was way easier with less cuts. And I like the way it came out. Hope this helps.

@@MakerDecor One more question: how did/do you get the black end of the neon strip that connects to the power source to be behind the acrylic?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor Жыл бұрын
@@zeronouveau Hi, I have only thought of three choices. Drill a big enough hole for the end to pass to the back. I have done that, didn't like it. Second cut the wire, drill a small hole and run the wire. Then reconnect the wire and seal it. Done it, didn't like it. The third option is to just leave it hanging low from the front? Hope this helps

Hi thank you so much for watching. Yes cut all the way through. Then peel back some of the soft part to expose the connectors. I have another video which shows the process better. Here is the title "Closer look at LED Neon connectors, solderless NEON LED signs" Thank you!

The LED strip has a black mark for the solider connections that shows through. You have to cut through the rubber/plastic defuser and the led tape. Once cut you will see to golden (sometimes silver) dots on each side of the strip. This is where the positive and negative go to pass electricity though the LED wire to light them up. You can solder or you can use the clips like this tutorial (which I didnt even know they made). Hopefully this helps Tori.

How would I go about connecting the wire on light to the adapter?

Hi thanks for watching. When you purchase the LED light it has a small piece on one end of the LED that is the female connection. Then you purchase the Adapter amzn.to/3zlsGKj to the female connection, plug in and it lights up. The LED tubing only comes with the one connection at the end of the line. I believe that is what you are talking about. All you need is the neon tubing which comes with the female connection at the end. Then the adapter which comes with the male connection, and they connect to each other. Hope this helps and please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

Hi Ben! Thank you for the video! I wanted to make one for my best friend . How thick should the plexiglass / acrylic glass be for me to drill a hole for the wire so that it doesn’t crack. 🙏🏻
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. The thinner the plexiglass the easier to crack. I used .220 size which is almost 1/4 thick from Home Depot. The thinner the drill bit hole the less chance of cracking. Just make sure it is fully flat on a surface or piece of wood so its supported good. Then drill slow with a thin drill bit. I have drilled through a couple of plexiglass and only had one crack. But I just pulled the bit out slowly, put in reverse and went through. The crack was minimal, so I was lucky and I was able to still use it. Good luck!

Hi thanks for watching. Are you using plexi glass and the super glue I used in the video? With those combinations it stuck with in 15 seconds? I also created A video that was in real time showing the gluing process a little bit easier. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gs-ZYLJ007WpfHk.html Also just asking did you take off the plastic that covers the plexi glass? Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for reaching out. I used a scroll saw to cut the acrylic. You just need to make sure you get the thicker one, the one here was I believe .220. I bought mine from Home depot and their is usually a thin one and thicker one. The thin one is easier to crack due to vibration. The thicker one is easier to manage. I have also seen people cut the acrylic with a jigsaw which is a cheaper tool. But go slow to avoid cracking acrylic and wear safety gear to be safe. Good luck.

@@MakerDecor Hey - thanks for the video. I wanted to know what blade you used on your scroll saw. I have tried with the very fine blades, but it seems to just melt the plexiglass when I cut it, and if I go any faster the plexi breaks. Thanks again
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor Жыл бұрын
@@phillismit7063 Hi, yes I use general purpose blades. The fine blades are too thin and allow the plastic to melt because it is not removing a lot of the plastic between allowing it to just melt with the heat from the blade. Yes going fast will crack the plexi glass, Also if you blade is dull it will make it more difficult to cut and will cause the cut not to be clean so it will melt back together. I am planning to make a video on this topic this weekend. As I get this question a lot. I will be covering how to cut it with a jigsaw and scroll saw, along with the blades and speed that create the best chance of not cracking the plexi glass. Hope this helps.

Thanks, they are called 2 pin LED strip wire connectors? I have never used gorilla glue except for this and it works great. One problem is that it only works so far with this brand of neon lights. I have tried it on two other ones and it doesn't have the same holding power? But for this application, there still holding strong over a year later.

@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching, I have not tried to use multi-colored lights yet. I imagine they work the same. Just a tip, if it is more for business I would look into soldering the connections as that would be more secure. I did these as I did not want to pay for the size I wanted. Which can be very expensive. The only difference I would do is solder the connection as that would have the connections welded together just incase of shipping or anything customers would do that can cause the plastic clips to disconnect. I have not had this happen but I can see if I were to sell these that could be a issue that would potentially pop up. Soldering is not difficult, just takes some practice, but that would make these a more reliable product to offer. The ones I used for events were on maybe 3 hours with supervision. And nothing went wrong and they still work, I just did not want to pay the over $200 to have them built and figured this out for me. I do have a heart one that I built on my channel that my wife used as a valentines decoration and would leave on all day in our house (off at night) for over a week with no issue. Just some advice to think about before making to sell to potential customers. Thanks

What did you do with the acrylic to avoid melting back? Usually with the heat of the saw welds plexi or acrylic back together after cutting ? Do you sand edges ? Whats best advise to get smooth finish ?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes sometimes the blade will do that. I use general purpose blades and plexiglass will dull those blades quick. So if you have a dull blade or it was cutting good and then it started to melt back together. The most likely culprit in my experience is just a dull blade? So its not getting a clean cut. A new blade and getting your timing right, not too slow and not too fast will help reduce the chance of it melting back together. Yes I do lightly sand the edges with a sanding sponge. Not a lot but enough to take off any plastic strings that hung on. Best advice for a smooth cut is a brand new blade. I have been working on putting a video together covering the topic of cutting plexiglass. Hopefully I get a chance to do it soon. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I just subscribed! This is awesome, how much to you charge to add this to a backdrop?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for subscribing. Pricing is all over the place. The first thing I would suggest is look at your market in your area. Ask for quotes and see what the base is and compare your product to theirs. What one area charges vs another can vary a lot. Also look what the size you have, would cost somebody to buy new and go from there. I myself usually try to get 1/3 on rentals at least but that varies. So if I know a sign would cost $150, the least I would rent it would be $50. So I would just have to rent it 3 times to get my money back and rest is profit. For some that is too cheap and others to expensive. You have to find what will work for your business to be profitable. But a lot of the time people create packages with backdrops, balloons, etc. and put it into the package. Just make sure you charge for your sign always. One thing to consider and that can get tough is what the sign says. If it is a generic sign you know will rent over multiple times such as "Oh Baby" etc. Versus if someone wants a custom sign that you know wont rent out as much, you are better off charging full price for the sign or asking them to purchase it. I have made signs that I thought would rent out and really did not do so well, so just really took a loss on those items.

What kind of bit are you using to drill the holes in the plexiglass? I have a glowforge (still in the box) and am making a wedding sign for a friend. This method seems it will be easier, but I don’t want to crack my plexiglass. Also, I got some Ryobi tools for Christmas, don’t have that fancy tool you used to cut the outline. What kind of hand tool would you suggest using?
@MakerDecor
@MakerDecor Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. But I would definitely take advantage of that glowforge. I'm jealous, lol. Hoping to get a laser cutter soon. I have made a couple of signs and have only cracked it twice I believe from the drilling. Both were still usable and just slight cracks and just takes some slight practice. Both times it cracked were my fault in stopping the drill too soon before drilling completely through. I just used a generic bit You do not need a scroll saw to cut the outline. A simple jigsaw with a plexi glass cutting blade will do it as well. But you do need thick plexi glass as the thinner will crack from the vibrations. The one I used was from Home Depot and I believe .220 thickness. Not the thin one. Hope this helps and good luck with your sign and your laser!! excited for you!
