I've made 5 of these with quilting cotton. As I use them for packing bags, I wanted as little weight as possible. Also, they just hold clothes like socks, underwear, shirts, etc. in a suitcase, and do not get so much wear & tear that I think you'd ever have to worry about durability. I suppose it depends on what you're using them for, but for packing, quilting cotton works very well.

thank you for sharing you make with cotton. there are many times that is exactly what we need when traveling, and we all know weight is important when traveling.

I have made bunches of these! I use quilting cotton for ones that I want to just use for clothes for packing plus it can be matched to what is inside. For example I traveled with cats from NYC to Arizona so all their food and toys were in cat themed quilt cotton so it was easy to spot in the car. Also batiks are awesome and give it a little more structure and as mentioned by someone else the inside is as pretty as the outside. Next is waterproof canvas, these are the most sturdy. A couple of points: you can make these taller simply by making the gusset fabric and hinge fabric wider! That doesn't affect any other fabric cuts at all. For the handles I used mostly cotton twill like you use for tote bag straps. My husband LOVES these for overnight trips or organizing his car and I use them for organizing my clothes for traveling or at home in the closet where we have shelves. Love the idea of adhesive binding and will be trying that. Thanks for this tutorial!

I've been making these like crazy! I'm using ripstop fabric, which is also waterproof and it's so lightweight that if takes absolutely no space in your luggage. I'm making them with a compression zipper as well, so then you can compress your items. I traveled last week with my new bags and they took up probably half the space that my clothing used to take. I also adjusted the size and made an extra large one that fits perfectly in the suitcase to hold dirty laundry to separate from the clean. This was great since we were staying in different hotels along the way. Would love to see you do the compression style.

I've made several of these, in nylon (which makes it machine washable), in laminated cotton (which makes it easy to wipe clean), and I have finished the seams with zig zag and also just a large straight stitch. Some customers have bought the medium size for gaming equipment. Great pattern.

I make mine with batiks, lovely on the front and the back. Lightest weight possible. N one ever touts the benefit of both sides being good as I always get my pieces sewn wrong, upside down or adhering interfacing to the wrong side. Using batiks is foolproof. Nothing helps with upside down labels though!

Couldn’t you use two layers of quilt cotton and use some double sided fusible fleece to fuse the layers together? Then you’d get different outer and inner fabrics for fun.

I've made 2 of these now. One in WPC (waterproof canvas) and one in clear vinyl. Both will be excellent for carrying projects in. If I sew any for packing, I'll use a lighter-weight fabric like quilting cotton, linen, etc.
