Here is the DIY lap stand I made to hold my cross stitch frames earlier this year. There are many ways that this design can be altered to suit your individual needs; I've seen others convert this to a floor stand as well. Use the video with this description to prepare and assemble your stand. If you have questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to help :)
This stand uses:
1/2 inch pvc pipe (I purchased a 10ft long piece and had a little leftover)
4 "T" connectors
6 "elbow" connectors
hand saw or other tool to cut the pipe
All measurements are approximate {and not perfectly cut :) }
A. 16 inches
B. 6 in (2 pieces)
C. 7.5 in (2 pieces)
D. 2 in (2 pieces)
E. 12 in (2 pieces)
F. 5.5-6 in (2 pieces)
G. 10 in (2 pieces)
Starting with A, add an elbow connector to each end and then connect with the B pieces. Add a T connector to each B piece. Place an elbow connector on one end of each C piece, connect the other end of C to the T connector with B. Place piece D into the middle opening of the T connector on B & C. Add another elbow to piece D and connect to E. Place the middle opening of the remaining T connector on E, then add F & G to the T connector.
You can glue the connections together if you want to, but if you want to keep the tilting action in place do not glue piece D to the "T" connector with B & C.
If you want to shorten the width of the stand to hold a Qsnap, you will need to shorten the length of piece A and then add inches to the D pieces so that the legs have enough room to be on either side of your legs.

So glad you showed this! I made a stand awhile ago, but would have never thought of putting together a scroll frame.

I tried searching for a cross stitch stand if it does exist and oh my god its so expensive. So I tried searching for a DIY version and that's how I found your video. Thank you so much for this! I'm gonna go out tomorrow to grab all the materials. Wish me luck!

I wish to thank you a lot as you came up with the solution to my discomfort while stitching. I bought a stand but was not happy with it cause I have spondylosis on my neck and my legs get swollen if I keep them on the ground. Money thrown away! Tried almost many many ways to solve the problem but without success. Finally you solved it and reasonably priced! "Chapeau"

Just put a cross piece between the two floor pieces. Either on the vertical legs or on the floor supports. Something going across the bottom to tie them together. Very creative !!

There are a couple of ways to lock in the stability for you . One you can use cotter pins or bolts drill some holes if you do not want to glue things permanently but you do want them not to move too much . As for lateral issues I had the same problem with a wooden frame and I was building . To resolve this what we did is we put another crossbeam a little further down 6 inches maybe you'll have to play and see how that locks it in for you so you won't have lateral movement . you can also put in triangles if you put in the second bar that will help stabilize them they are on sale in Amazon for supports remember correctly . none of those things work for you and you want to go super cheap use a rope or a not too tight bungee cord just make sure you doesn't swing out too far . I hope this works for you .

I bought the PVC pipe last night. Wish me luck!!! I will need to make it wider though. You had it at 21 inches (I think). You only weigh like 6 lbs so yours is smaller! Me on the other hand weigh....well I won't tell you....just know mine will be wider!!!

yes I wish to ask about frame as well It didn't look like q snap holding on fabric or was it?
@theevergreenneedle
@theevergreenneedle 7 жыл бұрын
No, it was basically just a large rectangle I made from another large piece of PVC pipe; I then used spare qsnap clamps to clamp the fabric onto the bars and then rolled the bars. It's kind of like a regular scroll frame set-up but without sewing the fabric onto the long pieces of pvc.

Did you use PVC pipe to make your frame as well and how do you hold the frabric on when you roll it if so? can you do a tutorial for this please?

Your big frame what size pvc is that... 1/2 inch or 3/4?
@monicamerkly2960
@monicamerkly2960 7 жыл бұрын
stupid question here because you probably addressed this in another video but how did you attach the fabric for your chatelaine to the lage pvc frame you made for it.
@theevergreenneedle
@theevergreenneedle 7 жыл бұрын
No, not a stupid question at all! I can't even remember if I had or not. I got 2 different sizes of spare Qsnap clamps and clamped the fabric onto the two long pieces of pvc, and then I rolled the fabric on the bars, then added the smaller side pieces of pvc. It was a bit challenging to get the fabric clamped on straight and roll the fabric nicely so I could get the best tension possible. I'll be honest though, the tension isn't perfect but I'm used to it now. I just really wasn't ready to buy a large frame so I was willing to work with a less than perfect set-up for this larger piece. I'm not sure if a sew-basting scroll rod set-up would be much better, I think part of the problem with tension is just that it's so long; it's usually tighter on the sides of the fabric than in the middle.

thank you was curious because I couldn't figure out how you would be able to bast it on there.
