AV tech here, one of the reasons you want the textured wall treatment in a studio is to prevent parallel reflection of sound. Your textured foam panels are great, but to give it a little edge in the future consider cutting the foam strips at a non regular angles. This is the reason egg crate texture and diamond textures are so common in sound treatment.
@Toxicity1987
@Toxicity1987 2 жыл бұрын
This, was a bit mad about it too, those right angle strips still reflect the sound to the same direction as a flat panel would.

Before you start cutting that pink/blue insulation foam rub yourself and your tools down with a new anti static dryer sheet. It really does help the little foam bits just fall to the floor instead of sticking to you.

A few months ago, I saw some very cool sound dampeners at a coffee shop - they had used old coffee bean bags (burlap probably?) with a nice frame and the logo of the bean company centered in the middle. Oh and I love the pink foam diffusers, a little black paint and they look great!

Take care that the insulation don't shed fibres, they would be really bad to inhale. If the do, wrap them in a fabric that won't let the fires through. It's a known problem with glass fibre panels in studios. You can also increase the sound absorption if you hang the or mount the panels a couple of centimeters (5.ish) out from the wall. The sound is absorbed going through the panels, and then the reflection is also absorbed. It makes a big difference.
@tcindie
@tcindie 2 жыл бұрын
Those are rockwool panels though, not fiberglass ;) It's rock that's heated and spun (like cotton candy) into fiber, and then pressed into panels. Sound deading performance is similar to that of fiberglass, but slightly better at some frequencies, it's also cheaper and not flammable! 👍
@chrisb4766
@chrisb4766 2 жыл бұрын
@@tcindie rockwool can also be cancer causing by releasing the fibers into the air. Please be very cautious when building your own acoustic panels. Many people suggest using a acoustically transparent cloth to contain the rockwool but that allows those fibers to be released into the air. Of course rockwool is (supposedly) much safer than asbestos but it is the REPLACEMENT for asbestos so it is most definitely not a perfect solution. If you want amazing and safe acoustic treatment please get dedicated foam and activated carbon absorbers. I love acoustics there is just a ton of misinformation out there, in fact I’m most likely wrong about some of this!

I remember when I treated my room to make a home studio. I bought a big box of insulation and made a bunch of those sound absorption panels. I hanged them up, and sold the rest of them to friends. I think I practically ended up doing my whole room for free as the profits of the ones I sold matched my costs for all the materials. They work insanely well, my room is super quiet!

I do like the set design of the studio and the panels definitely give it an extra flavour. Looking at the wide shot at the end, a small extra idea could be to add a singular LED strip or tube on each panel (not on the front, but on the sides), if placed in a different position each time it could look quite cool.

At 14:59, watching the saw blade going through the huge panel of foam at varied heights reminded me of the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. To get a more even coat of paint on your foam diffusers, you could use Mod Podge to seal it prior to painting. I noticed some of the "end grain" sections of the panels look a bit spotty.

The art of craftsmanship never ends with us lefties . .. And I use command strips on my 3D plastic tiles on my wall and it only last for about a year. Soo much air going through I guess . I'm curious to know why for the top rail assembly, did you consider french cleats instead of the method you showed in the video? If so, why yours instead of the cleats? I am just assuming while there isn't much weight as you stated, the cleats would just make it even easier to slide down the row for adjustments and not need the risk of that top 1x4 failing at the connection. Thanks for the continued great videos!

If you haven't already done so, make sure to check your local fire code. At least where I live, all of the hanging rigging you made wouldn't be allowed. The 2x4s are too close to the ceiling and can't be doused by the sprinkler system, and all of the pipes and hanging gear would block the sprinklers from covering the whole room. Commercial spaces are really tricky.
