I think these hinges are breaking when the giant claw from the truck squeezes too hard and causes the outer hinges to spread outwards. Another scenario is when the can is slammed down on the diagonal and the weight of the lid causes some side torque to the hinge. The hinges are clearly under designed to take the forces they encounter over time. The hinge pins seem to be only fixed on the outside end with some locking mechanism. When my hinge first cracked, I drilled a couple of stress release holes at the crack ends to prevent the crack from spreading. The next week I noticed the cracked hinge had been wedged open. The hinge pin had been pulled outward, and the end of the hinge pin was caught at an angle that held the crack open. The two holes I had drilled had prevented the crack from growing longer, but had not prevented the hinge from opening up. To prevent the hinge from opening up at all I simply drove a screw into the non-rotating part of the hinge and all the way through the hinge pin to prevent the hinge pin from being pulled out. The cracked hinge is now constrained from spreading when forces are applied to separate it.

Thanks for the tip about pushing screen into the crack. I first widened the crack with a narrow blade on an electric hand-held grinder. I suppose a jig saw would also work. I also drilled holes at the ends of the crack to stop the crack spreading.

The damage may have been precipitated by the combination of cold weather (plastic more brittle?) and a period of putting heavier than normal debris (broken concrete and old magazines) in the cans

Thanks so much! I have a heat gun and wire mesh and will try to repair holes in the bottom of my trashcan. I'm planning to cut some extra plastic from the top of the can to add to the area with the hole. So nice not to have to go buy rubber sealant or epoxy, etc! Cheers!
