@@DHamDIY I have to agree with fluid36, you should soak the wood as it assists with sealing the wood and reducing the chance of water penetration. You should aviod using/leaving screws in there unless they are a very high grade of stainless. They will rust up with any contact with water and the rot will be back. You should also use chopstran and bi between the layers of wood as well as on the inside and outside skins. It would be worth looking into unwaxed polyester as it has several advantages. You mentioned that marine ply was really expensive over standard ply but then state that cosa board would be another good option. It would be interesting to open her back up to see if it is holding up well or even to do a drill test to see if the wood is wet lower down.

@@bozmanx The right thing to do would be to throw that boat away and just buy a new one. Anyone interested in an avanti? No sentimental value it wasn't a dead family members it was a fun project that's all. Think I paid 1500 for the 75hp merc motor good trailer and a boat with a rotten transom titles to all of them. Fixed the transom on my own and made a video on it as well hopefully showing someone out there it's a doable project for a weekend warrior. For a couple hundred and a few days I saved it from the dead a few more years and was out on the water. How much would you have charged to fix it "right"? @@DHamDIY my issue is not that your a weekend warrior, I have also done floors and stringers. My point is that there is a right way and wrong way and that for a few more dollars in materials and a bit more care and research the boat could/would have another 20 years as a solid transom. The value in my comments are more for those that read them and look into some of the points that I raise before tackling this type of job.

Held up for me for at least 100 trips out in rough and calm waters for me. Sold to neighbor who hasn't mentioned any problems. Not a professional job by any means but boat was old, some boats only need so much love. Thanks for watching!

I believe it was a polyester resin. Cheaper than epoxy but not as strong. Heard epoxy is too brittle however where polyester resins have some give to them which apparently is better for marine use. Thanks for watching!
