Welcome to our start to finish overview of the rebuilding of our 16 foot Carolina J16 skiff transom. In this video, with the help of our friend, Freddy Martinez, we tear out an old, busted, waterlogged, wooden transom and will walk you through each step of the rebuild. We used premium products so the materials cost is still a little on the high side but we saved a couple thousand perhaps on labor costs and we KNOW that his transom was built correctly and will be super strong. Instead of using plywood as the frame, we splurged a little bit and used cooza board. Cooza board is very expensive but is extremely tough and long lasting. It will never rot. It is not susceptible to insect damage. It does not absorb water like wood does and it is 40% lighter than plywoodIt was a no brainer for me when Fred presented the options. Let's build it right and let's build it tough! This will be the last time I rebuild the transom on this boat!!! Our material cost on this project was around $800. We bought product in large quantities to have left overs for building our rear deck and polling platform that you will see in future videos but the cost of this project will have been realistically between $700-800.
