I have one of these lights already hanging over my workbench in the garage that I picked up at my local Walmart a couple years ago.

Yea, they are available pretty much everywhere and they produce really good light for the money. I was surprised at how slim and light weight they really are.

this amount of light is perfect great example. im looking for one with some sort of battery or rechargeable though as I’d like it to be portable. is there anyway to do that?

Would you need an T5/T8 extension power cord cable to make it work or plug into wall outlet?

The transformer (LED regulator) is already build in so all you do is plug it into the wall and that's it.

Great idea, but fyi, those harbor freight lights you were comparing it, the hooks on those lights actually can be pulled out and it’s stretched to bungee chords on both ends. So you can extend it to where you need to hook it too. Also they are rechargeable and it has magnets on both ends. And also it’s shatter proof and water proof. I would hate for my DIY light to break on me and electrocute me if it accidentally falls or something since it’s a plug in vs the harbor freight one that battery powered and has a shatter proof water resistant housing also. Cool idea you got, maybe that’s why harbor freight did it to their lights. Lol I’m guessing you didn’t actually look at the harbor freight lights to see all of its functions.

You are making a lot of assumptions that are mostly incorrect. The Harbor Freight lights have magnets on the ends not hooks. You can't use magnets on Aluminum hoods (like mine) like most modern cars have these days. The magnets are also weak and could fall on your head as you're working on the engine. I have seen the HF lights at the store and they are also too weak. Around 800 lumens which is just too little for a dark engine bay. I prefer lights above 1000 lumens for this type of light. Also the light that I was showing has a plastic shatter proof cover and has an LED light strip, so I don't know where you came up with the idea that it will shatter and electrocute you. Many folks have also complained on other videos I have made that the HF lights break (stop working) way too easily after just a few months of use. So my idea is still the cheapest way to get a good under hood light.

Does the light come with the base or do I need to locate one

These lights are available with or without a base to suit your application. So just look for one where the base is included just like the one I use in the video. I got that one as one complete unit.

I don't know how it comes across on video for you but it has a plastic case and a plastic lense cover. It will not shatter.

Ironically the harbor freight lights he mentioned in the beginning has a shatter period housing and it’s water resistant. It also has bungee chords attached to those hooks he. Mentioned that didn’t work well lol
