Be aware your machine will more than likely be on borrowed time and start to burn oil after this. But it will still be usable if it works. Make sure to check your oil regularly after you unstuck an engine.

I USED this on my lawn mower, Craftsman 6.5 Briggs and Stratton that I have had since June 2005. After replacing the starter rope the it was still frozen/locked. I was within. 2 minutes and 4 F-BOMBS left of spending $350 to $400 on a new mower……when I used your solution! Like you I said “what the hell let’s give it a shot”. Put the proper amount of oil in (…which frankly over the 17 years of use I NEVER did….) and “unfroze” the blade like you showed, and it ran like new!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s solid AMERICANS like you that take the time to film a possible solutions to help us retired broke dick 66 year old Marine fix it himself. 👏👏🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺!

My brother found a 1958 or 59 craftsman rototiller that had not been used since the mid 60's in our grandfolks barn that was seized up and he poured Marvel Mystery Oil in the sparkplug hole and let it sit overnight and it worked! He put fresh gas in and changed the oil and it runs to this day (May, 2020)!

Thanks.. worked like a charm . Mine had seized after sitting out back under a tarp for about three years. I never once tried to start it and today I decided to give it a whirl and it was locked solid. I couldn’t even move it with my hands. I still had oil in it so I added a little more and sprayed some wd40 in the cylinder and she freed right up. After about five pulls on the cord she fired up so thanks a lot.

I've unseized two engines successfully so far; one was a 1970s Tecumseh 7 horse mounted on an Ariens snowblower chassis. The original owner ran it out of oil and gave it to my dad; I was able to unseize it with WD40 and a pipe wrench (my plan was to replace the engine anyway), but sure enough; it ran for an entire season of snowblowing before I revved it to the moon and snapped a valve stem collar. The second time was actually my Honda motor scooter; I was barreling down the highway at around 75mph (it's a freeway-legal 250cc model), and the oil plug fell out (I recently changed the oil and got distracted before I torqued it down... whoops!) and the engine locked up. After letting it cool and filling the crankcase, she's been running fine (compression is perfect) ever since. Eventually, the engine will need a rebuild anyway, but I dodged a bullet there.
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 8 жыл бұрын
Hey man ya this is the only one I have personally done before. It's a total crapshoot sometimes as to if it will work and even how long it will last. I remember that video you put up of when it happened to your scooter you def got lucky there man, how much does a rebuild kit run or even a good used motor for one of those go for? Are they easy to find?
@bbishoppcm
@bbishoppcm 8 жыл бұрын
+hanksranger A proper top-end rebuild will cost me north of $700 using all OEM parts. A Chinese top-end will cost around $250 complete. Since I place zero faith in Chinese knockoff parts, I'll be spending around $700. A complete used motor will cost about the same, but without knowing the engine's history, I'd prefer to just rebuild it myself when the time comes.
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 8 жыл бұрын
+BBISHOPPCM's World interesting, yea I can see that. My boss was actually given 4 chinese quads with copies of the 125 motor that honda makes, all the honda parts do swap over but I honestly wonder how long those copycat motors last compared to the real thing. Makes sense to just rebuild though over going used hell maybe you can have it bored and stroked for a little more power perhaps?

These Tecumsehs are good engines and pretty tough. They do like clean and full oil though. LOL. I picked one up like this from a neighbor two doors down, he replaced it with a $500 Toro from HD. I initially took it for parts and then got to freeing it up the same way you did using heavy gloves and rotating the blade. Added oil, it still had fuel in it, unjammed the starter cord, tightened a loose wheel and in 10 minutes I was cutting my lawn with it (that was 1998). I still have the machine, although it's in my "retired" pile since I have newer ones to use. I used it for a full ten years every week. The machine was already ten years old (made in March 1988) when I got it. AYP made Sears Craftsman (like this one) with a 3.5 hp Tecumseh. My neighbor was shocked to see me using it. Fast forward to 2019 (that neighbor moved away). Guy next door to him throws out a 2007 MTD push mower. I grab it, and same thing, unjam the blade. The real problem was it being over filled with oil. For $1.78 for a new plug, and air filter (which I had already) and correcting the oil level, I got myself a runner. Fires right up and works like new. Again, shocked neighbor. This weekend's find was a Devilbiss pressure washer with a Briggs engine. We'll see what happens here.

They get a bad rap but I like them and always fix them first. never had any issues on returns , never. cool work instead of just trashin it. ripped apart a newer Briggs the other day. had bad valve guide and low compression . I was amazed that they now use a plastic cam shaft. :[

Very good video. But I have to say, the reason why the engine ceased was that your heat-dissipating fins on top of the cylinder were extremely clogged, causing more heat. This breaks down the oil, causing it to burn then cease. Always clean your fins after every 5 uses. Dirt and oil build-up are the lawnmowers' enemy. Degreaser or even auto brake cleaner spray does the trick. Of course, check your engine oil periodically. Change the oil after 15 uses. Check, clean, and gap your spark plugs to specs. Clean or replace your air filter. Check your blade for any cracks or dullness. Replace if necessary. And lastly, always use a Portable fuel filter by Mr. Funnel. (Mr. Funnel AF1CB Fuel Filter). When storing your lawnmower, remove all gas from the tank, then run your engine until it shuts off on its own. This will make your lawnmower last for a very long time. Keep these videos coming, I really enjoy them. :)

If you want to get rid of some of your mower hoard you could remove the engine from the mower body and make a frame for the mower engine and a car alternator and sell them as a generator once you fit other necessary things to make it work as a generator.

Not bad for a old Tecumseh. I had a old 3.5hp briggs that was seized so I put WD40 in the spark plug hole and let it soak and manually turned the blade and got it free but it had a thing where it would act like it was going to start but then would backfire well in one of these cases it had leaked gas out the exhaust and when it backfired it caught the mower on fire! later i was stealing the blade brake cable and it managed to leak gas all over the garage floor just wanted to be left alone lol. But I helped a lady with her mower the other day she when I went over she was like arent you the lawnmower master? im like yeah I guess lol my neighbors have seen me take in and fix many mowers since I have lived here but she couldnt get it started it was a Honda and niether her or my dad could figure it out until I pointed out the fuel shut off valve was closed I had another lady a year ago who couldnt get her Briggs started and I pointed out the spark plug wire was unplugged and thats why it wouldnt start and she gave me $5 for helping her lol the people you run into

+hanksranger Im just surprised this Tecumseh didnt have carb issues for how old it is thats how I deal with them if I find them see if its a easy fix or not my first lawnmower was a Tecumseh and I went through the carb a few times and it only ran off starting fluid for a few seconds plus the gas was getting on the deck and eating the paint so after seeing they wanted $60 for a carb I gave up on it
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 8 жыл бұрын
+Theghostmaster 87 ya unfortunately I've had to do the same with them. I get a lot of people asking me why I don't deal with more Tecumsehs but I always try to tell them it's because parts are not cheap. They are usually Atleast twice the price of Briggs stuff if not 3x more. I do give them one chance though before I give up on them
@Twintania
@Twintania 8 жыл бұрын
+hanksranger Yup I agree with that they arent worth the money I give the carb a quick cleaning and see where it goes, not worth the time if it takes more I mean even the carb rebuild kit for my Briggs quantum motor was $30 and the diaphram gasket for my Briggs classic carb was cheap plus a bit of carb cleaner and both were good

That things is a beast, definitely would be a keeper if it were mine. Is that Rotella for diesels only like it says on the front? I wanted to try it out for my mowers but it all said for heavy duty diesels on it. I've been using Castrol GTX and it's been a damn good oil. Do you ever come across newer Hondas?
@hanksgarage_

+ChicagoSirens Its fine just massively over kill for a lawn mower, the guys on bobistheoilguy forums have run it in mowers before with no bad results, it just exceeds manufacture recommendations. Ive not had any issues with it yet. No on the newer hondas, in fact I hardly come across them most common are murray, mtd, bolens etc with either briggs or tecumsehs.

I wouldn't own a Tecumseh. I worked for them for years on the carburetor lines in Salem, IN and they're junk. Take a briggs over them any day. Their hydrostatic transmissions are great (worked on that line as well) We used to try our darndest to tear those things up and they'd just keep right on working, but the carbs were crap, lol.

Sounds like the engine might by tight. Do what I did in this video and see if that helps. You’ll have to take the recoil off and take the center bolt out, use a little wd40 inside of the hole and put back together. Don’t do anything more than take that bolt out. You’ll risk unwinding the spring

About 5 weeks ago it was running but before i heard a slight clicking noise when i put my ear down to the engine so its rubbing and started running rougher i gave it little revs then it just shut off Now the back wheels are locking up =(

Trucker boy 98 Yea keep doing that you may be able to unseize it, chances are it will seize up again and burn some oil but you should be able to get some more use out of it

I have couple of keepers, too. The scrappers a meth heads snag anything metal. Just plain luck to find one in PSL, Fl. Lately, though, I had a run of pressure washers, all with bad pumps, and motors that need minimal work, to carb work. Pumps are too expensive to buy and make any money on resale. Except for one I'm keeping for my use. But, the motors all run now, on the rest. Nice video.

the scrappers and flea market fuckers around here drive me nuts man agree on the pumps too, ridiculous how they get you like that
@rivercidal
@rivercidal 3 жыл бұрын
What causes the pumps to go bad is that you need to run the water first, then turn on your open sprayer, then start the pressure washer. When turning off the pressure washer, make sure your sprayer is still going then turn off the pressure washer. Do not turn off the water until you have turned the pressure washer off first.

Those old motors are so much tougher than the modern motors. Keep oil in it and I say she runs for years. Anything is possible but I have unseized a few engines and used them for years with no adverse effects. If I wanted to sell it, I would just be honest about it and say the motor was seized when I got it but it came around. For $40-50, people will see it runs good and just buy it. Its old, its used. You could sell them a 3 year old mower that hasn’t been seized and it could still blow up next week! Most engines blow up because they are abused and/or neglected ... not because of poor engineering.

The newest Briggs in fact are poorly engineered. I’ve done a few videos on them. Busted oil sumps, starter cups, recoils etc. They are made to a price point. Gone are the days of the 3.5 horse flat heads that run forever.

Tecumseh mower engines had automatic choke carburetors through 1977. There were also a few Craftsman engines that had top-mounted primers; those engines were produced from 1978-84.

its fluctuated over the years currently about 20 complete decks with motors, have maybe 10 or so complete motors on the shelf, and a few plastic crates for of parts, you can see it in better detail in my fixing mowers for money video I did, though it has changed since then
