DIY Van Build - Promaster 2500 159WB - Paneling the Walls - Part 6

New project!! We will be building out a 2021 Dodge Promaster 2500 159 inch wheel base van and turning it into a beautiful tiny home on wheels.
I have built a sailboat, a dinghy, two teardrops and an RV. What better way to combine all builds into one, than to build out a van and enjoy many travels! Journey with me as I put my skills to the test and turn an ordinary cargo van into a luxurious dwelling place on wheels!
We will compliment this van with a full size bed, bench seating for two, running water, full electric, propane cooking appliances, lights throughout, outside shower, and top it off with solar power to run everything. And to add that extra flare… we will do it in BATMAN style!

I’m so glad I found your video! Your woodwork is great! I know you’re just making it seem easy but it gives me hope that I can finally move to this step of my build. I’ve been too scared to move forward. That alone with some health issues I’ve stopped. Also, I like seeing the paneling because they are difficult to come by in my opinion. I thought I would do it one way but this way makes more sense. I should probably tell my mom she was correct 😅😂. Thank you so much & I can’t wait to see your other videos!

Thank ya! Yeah... the high desert can have its fair share of heat. Cooled down some now... in the low 80's, so now I have to wear a sweat shirt! LOL!

Dang, that's hot for that far north, it's one of the reasons I haven't started on my next build. That and a money saving issue for the LARGEST expense for it which is a secret but the cost is around $1800 shipped to me. Stay tuned it'll be really cool when I start the build. Keep up the good work.

Quite a contrast from having to run the space heater in your trailer build to keep it warm enough to work. You do beautiful work even at 110F ;)

Thank you again for taking the time to film your builds! I was planning to do plywood panel on the roof and ship lap on the sides. Were there any technical reasons you are going with plywood paneling? Curious your thought process, does seem easier.

I think it's a matter of preference, I like the looks of the liner paneling. Not to mention that the cost of lumber had gone up quite a bit. Made the process go a bit quicker too. Just the right color too... :)

Did you change or add to the top angles pieces? I’ve use the “1x6” and they are set behind the kick outs.

I did... I added an additional 3/4" on top of the 1 x 6 so everything cleared. You might try just 1/2" first and see if that works on top of the 1 x 6.

Thanks for the video :). I have a question about the roof framing. It looks like you used 1x3 pine that you bolted to the ceiling framing. Is that right? We aren't sure if we should use 1x3 pine or if we should rip strips of 1/2"plywood. Are you concerned about the 1x3 being bent too much when conforming to the ceiling curvature?

Hello and thanks for the question. Correct, I used the 1 x 3 for the roof framing, it takes the bend really well and using the rivnuts, it holds pretty solid. 1/2" plywood strips will work as well, but in my opinion, doesn't have the holding power of a solid piece of wood. Depends what you will be fastening to the ceiling. In my case, the 1/4" ply covered with material is pretty light. I could have used plywood... if I were going to use 1/4" ply with shiplap over it... I would want something a little more stronger as much more weight will be added. Hope that helps some, Thanks for checking it out! al

Just curious is the wall framing also made up of 1×3 strips?

How did you get your cardboard template to perfectly match the contour of the wheel well ?

Great question! It will be difficult to explain in the comments. It takes several scribe marks and cuts. I drew a rough shape of the wheel well on a piece of cardboard until it sat over the well. Then using a pair of dividers (starting in the center) I keep the dividers perpendicular to the floor and draw around the wheel well (without turning the dividers). I do that two or three times until I match the well. Might have to do a video explaining how I do it... but it really doesn't take that long, and works every time

Thank you so much for these SUPER helpful videos! Curious what type of wood you used for both the furring strips and plywood? Were they pine, cedar, or something else? And any type of special plywood for the walls?

I used Select Pine. It is clear pine (Knot free), lightweight and very strong. It is also very straight. Not the cheapest wood, but not the most expensive either. Very nice wood to work with! The plywood is a 1/4" hardwood purchased at Lowe's... they also have 1/4" Birch ply, but the hardwaood is less expensive.

After paneling how wide was it from panel to panel? Any thoughts on how you could have kept more of the width?

My width ended up at 69". Could gain an additional 1-1/2" if I just went with vertical studs.

@@OregonBatman I missed the first one, but have enjoyed the teardrop, CNC and now the ProMaster. I’ve been looking for a Sprinter to build, but prices right now are outrageous. Look forward to seeing what the Expo has for info.
