This was such a relief to get done. If there's one thing I can't stand, it is unnecessary noise. Ever since we bought the ES, there was this creaking noise coming from the rear. I always thought it was just the old suspension and tried to ignore it the best I could. After researching it more, it was just as simple as replacing a single bushing. We've worked on about 3-4 SCs and upgraded every single bushings to polyurethane in the past, and knew that this was going to a piece of cake.
To avoid having to remove the entire wheel hub just to press in a single bushing, we put together some simple parts to install the new bushings.
3/8 5" bolt and nut
Various washer sizes
Square washer (used for deck building)
2" long 2" diameter PVC cutout
0.5" long 2" diameter PVC cutout
Bought the polyurethane bushings off of Amazon. There's a handful of options. It's the same for the Camry's of the same year. I chose to go with polyurethane since its harder, yet the one I chose wasn't as hard as the performance types which didn't change the ride feel of the vehicle. All in all, I am very pleased with the outcome, as my 21 year old Lexus, rides like a Lexus again.

Man!! I thank you very very very much for the video. I went to a mechanic to change the bushings on my Camry, he started hammering it with a hammer, after a while, I apologised and said I have an emergency just to leave the stupid Mec. Once the weather gets nicer I will do it myself. Cheers

Thank you for the video. I rented a bushing remover set but it was too big, so I went to my local Ace hardware store and bought the screws etc, and got it done that way. I did use my impact driver to go a little faster

I have had a pair of these bushings sitting in my garage for a while now due to not wanting to remove the Knuckle to press bushings, really just removing the parking brake assembly was what deterred me. Thank you for making a nice clear video and listing the tools you used! I guess I’ll have to get my lazy arse to the hardware store and pick up some bushing removal tool components 😂

Very Nice!! I especially like your on-the-road video from underneath the car capturing the suspension movement And the resultant noise. I think you have helped me to finally hone in on the part I need to change on my 2001 Lexus ES 300. It was also a genius "homebrew" tool you made for the occasion; thanks for the parts list, too. I would say you need to start a "Milwaukee Impact Wrench" fund to save you some time in the future. I would contribute a few bucks to it.... Thanks, again. (And I would echo what someone else posted - you should add the words, "rear creaking suspension" to the title description so those of us looking for video solutions for such symptoms would find this quickly and more reliably)

Made my square deck washer out of an old mower blade. Measured 3 1/2 and cut with cut off tool. Used center hole as center of course. Had PVC and many of washers. Had to buy 5” bolt and nuts at hardware store. $2.

I used the tool to replace my 97 Camry bushings. Minor problem with keeping the 1/2" PVC section from sliding off center but I was able to get the job done as shown in the video.

Used this exact set except they didn’t have 2” pvc so I used a 1 1/2 PVC coupler which was 2” diameter as well and fit around the bushing perfectly. Everything came out like butter.

It was on the outside of the knuckle where the bushing would need to come through the other side and go into the 1/2" piece that he added. If he had not added that, the bushing would not have been able to come out the other side (the opposite side that he was pushing the bushing in from).

Awesome info-I would add be careful which bushings you buy-I tried two I got on Amazon and they would not go in no matter what! Found some from Rock Auto called PSB bushings-slid in like butter! In fact, after pressing in about 1/4 of the way I was able to gently tap them all the way with a rubber hammer easily! Also if you have a Milwaukee or other brand battery operated ratchet you can get the old bushing out in a heartbeat! Mine was a 99 Lexus ES300 but is the exact same as this Camry.

You're so lucky to be in a region not soaked in salt spray for Winter road clearing 5 months out of the year... Here in New England, everything under our cars is bonded with rust, and projects like this become nearly impossible without a torch, drills, a reciprocating saw and multiple blades.... to cut and toss everything because the dang bolt is seized inside the bushing ferrule. It's a nightmare.

Great video! For anyone contemplating, Dorman and a few others make rubber bushings if you don’t want to go the polyurethane route. Personally I prefer rubber for vibration control. But it’s personal preference and likely doesn’t matter either way on a trailing arm application

The rubber OEM bushings have already dry rotted, it's time to retire them.

@@OrganizedGarageStatus As I stated, ultimately it’s a preference at the end of a oem bushings service life to choose between rubber replacements or polyurethane. Polyurethane are NOT used by OEMS for a reason(exotic sports cars are an exception). They don’t dampen vibration anywhere near as well as a rubber bushing. This isn’t my opinion, it’s a fact. They both however have trade offs. But if you want comfort, especially in a Lexus I’d stay away from polyurethane. If it was a Porsche, then who cares about the cloud like ride 🤙🏻

@@nordicpride9708 It's just a couple of bushings, it wouldn't make a huge difference in drive feel. I've had it for 5 years. Haven't squeaked since, and don't feel any harsher than before.

@@OrganizedGarageStatus My point is if the customer is picky about ride quality and wants the oem experience, poly isn’t the answer. I’ve done many of these. I strictly work on Toyota Lexus and own a ES330. I had this exact issue. The cure was new quality rubber bushings lubed with a rubber friendly brake grease that contains ceramic additives (CRC makes it). Most modern rubber is (EPDM) which is a synthetic rubber. It’s not your grand pappies rubber bushing. Drive belts, timing belts and many other parts are made from this stuff and have been since the early 2000’s. I’m not saying you did anything wrong per se. But again if a person wants to guarantee a car like a Lexus rides as a Lexus was designed and intended, rubber is the best option for said customers. EPDM lasts just as long as poly as poly will eventually wear out. The rubber typically cracks and separates but this is after hundreds of thousands of miles. This degradation of rubber can be arrested by applying a product such as 303 aerospace or ATP-205. Most just are ignorant of this maintenance item. Regardless you fixed it and good to hear no negative effects.

Nice video! I liked the idea of "live" camera footage. GoPro camera / phone? How did you affix it to the underside of the car? My biggest problem is being able to remove the bolts or get them to budge. I don't have an acetylene torch, so I'm thinking of buying a new bolt first, then cut the old one off with a angle grinder. I couldn't find a bushing for my '96 Avalon, so I had to buy the entire trailing arm. Where did you find a bushing?

They probably do at this age and mileage. But I only replaced the squeaky bushings.

If that bushing is bad will it cause play in the steering wheel too?

I'm sure it can, but I'd start with basics first. Check for the steering rack bushings if they're still intact. I would also replace tie rods if they've never been replaced. But suspension condition can mainly affect steering feel.

Any time you mess with suspension you always have to get an alignment. You are supposed to get an alignment once a year as well.

No it will not work. At least the kit that I had didn’t work. There is not enough space for the “C” clamp to fit between the rear drum and trailing arm. Use this guys method instead and save yourself the headache. You can literally pick all this stuff up for less than $17 at your local home depot or Lowe’s.
