For stich lines I recommend selecting the outline *Object -> Path -> Offset Path* then with the direct select tool remove certain edges and bring down the corners.

You can create a stitch line more easily when you select your path at the bottom and you to edit-> path -> offset path. Fill in -4 mm as a value and hit enter. This will offset your line 4mm inwards and the rounded corners will also be perfectly scaled in proportion. Give it a try, it will make your workflow quicker and easier. Cheers. Love your videos by the way! Great work

Great tutorial. Just a tip: when you do stitches, you can try the next menu comand: Object -> Path -> Offset Path and enter a negative value "-4mm". It works great even with complicated designs and saves you some time.

I was going to mention that. Also...he should leave the stroke between the stitch marks, and keep them at 1mm. The reason is if he engraves it, and burns the dashes through...he'll have an inset to lay his stitching into.

Great video mate, I've always wanted to try some leatherwork and you are a big inspiration to start that. Quick tip as someone who uses Illustrator everyday, you can speed up your stitch hole path creation by selecting your original outer shape then head up to the 'Object > Path > Offset Path' menu and set the offset to -4mm, hit OK and you're good to go! It'll create that new path for you, the inner radius of your corners will look natural and it will automatically align it perfectly in position. You can then just direct select and remove any parts of the original path you don't need stitch holes for too.

Hey, nice video. There is an easier way to create a stitch line out of your shape. Copy your shape, offset path (-4mm in your case), and only THEN delete extra part. Then you might need little adjustments, sometimes you don`t need even them :)

Hey - I was thinking, why not use Object->Path->Offset to create the stitchline? works well for me, and is easier with more complex forms. Also, I have made a habit of not “subtracting” any holes from shapes, instead I just group them together. It makes later modifications easier, and the laser will just cut where the lines are either way.

Thanks for the awesome tutorial! Couple of questions though. 1. Do you usually add trim allowance to your projects? I'm afraid I couldn't line up two pieces covered in glue perfectly from the first try (don't laugh). 2. What's the basic approach to do the measurement? I mean if a business card has size X*Y mm, if I'll create a pocket of the same size between stitching lines it probably wouldn't fit at the end (because of the card thickness, leather thickness issues). What's the general rule of thumb here? What amount of "ease" should one add to the original size of the object? Thanks for the time reading and probably answering!
@ramsesm

@Simmonsstummer
@Simmonsstummer 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video. I need to understand one thing. Sometimes watching your videos i see you trim the edges even if you used the die to cut the leather. So if you design in illustrator something you have to consider the die cutting line and the one you trim. And after that the line where you will make the holes for stitching. What distances you use for all these lines?

One thing I just learned working with my glowforge and illustrator is that if you don't DESELECT the "Responsive" box under "more options" when you save the SVG file, this can remove the absolute sizing done in illustrator and scale it to something random (for me it was ~75% of the designed size) when you load it into the glowforge. So make sure to turn this off!

Little tips for Illustrator. 1- When you have the rectangle tool selected, just click on or off the artboard then a window will pop up for you to input your desired dimensions! 2- When both shapes are selected for an alignment, click on the shape you want the other shape to be aligned to. This shape will stay where you want it to be while the other will get aligned! 3- The shape builder tool lets you substract an area by holding alt/opt and dragging your cursor through the shapes. Without alt/opt, it will combine them! 4- With a shape selected, hold ctrl/command to grab and move said shape by an anchor (vertices) to have a more precise positioning
