This is the first rock chip video I've seen that I can't say anything bad about it. It's different equipment than I use but its not bad. You said in the beginning that this guy knows his stuff. I was ready to tear him apart. But, I can't. He actually knows his stuff. Grest job.

+Jaime Jr Gallegos While I don't have a bunch of experience with Chemical Guys (only really tried their foam DA pads and some other stuff), their products seem alright. What prevents me from buying more of their stuff though is the bullshit marketing pseudo-techno jargon they spout about their products, like "Hex-Logic Technology" and "high-gloss polymers". I'm far more likely to buy an honest product than something a marketing team came up with.

Great vid, thanks Larry! Just a comment regarding the replacement of factory windshields. From someone who used to work for one of the large US based automotive glass companies, let me tell you first hand you want to do everything in your power to keep your original windshield! Aftermarket Repair Glass (ARG) is NOT manufactured to the same standards as OEM supplied glass. There are often distortions present that would never pass OEM inspection, and on occasion if there are quality control issues with OEM glass production, it's often considered "good enough" to ship out as OEM replacement glass, so even buying new glass from your dealership is not a guarantee of good quality. This situation is worsening with more and more ARG product coming in from overseas where quality control, and even the quality of the raw glass itself, are not up to OEM standards. This happened with my Mother's car, which now has a large wavy distortion right in her field of view. Folks, look after and repair your original windshields if at all possible... if you go to your local auto glass replacement facility for a replacement windshield you usually have no idea what type of product you'll get. Fix the chips before they become cracks!

Don't forget that a good glass repair company will replace your OEM windshield with... an OEM windshield. My glass guys will whenever possible pull a windshield from a junkyard car.

So much better than safelite. I had a chip in my daily driver, wasn't nearly as clear as this guys work. After they finished my chip, it was like i could clearly see the chip easily and it sometimes makes me feel like they didn't even do anything but i specifically watched them do the whole process. They did what they could and i appreciate that. It just sucks that the crack is still so visible.

Wow. I'm pretty glad that I saw this video. I had a guy work on a "chip" on my new Nissan Altima who apparently didn't actually work for Nissan. A third party. The guy actually made the chip larger and wiped the resin right out of the chips he just "repaired." He did only a fraction of what was shown in this video. Where can I buy the equipment you used?!!!!!!! TAKE MY MONEY!

Unfortunately not all "window-repair-men" are as skilled as this guy. Recently I had two stone chips on the passenger side of my car that I wanted to get fixed. Unfortunately - after he performed the repair, the "craters" are still very much visible.

I know you hand polished that area where the chip is, but now that it is resin filled can you still safely machine polish the windshield with out fear of digging up the filler?

Great video but don't forget that windshield cracks are permitted by law to fix up to 14 inches long without removing your windshield and it can be done safely with proper training. Most windshield repair technicians are afraid or just don't have the skills to perform long crack repairs. We fix cracks safely up to 18 inches as long as it is not in the acute area of the windshield. Thanks for sharing great videos like this so that the public can learn the importance of professional repairs vs DIY.

Also I was cleaning my windshield the other day and did find a chip but, it's just dished out chip, no spidering at all. Does not seem to have penetrated first glass layer. Does it need to be repaired?

I do a lot of these repairs with a very similar system, but the length of time he holds the drill seems too long for me? I do 1-2 second bursts to stop going through to the laminate. but nice job, as stated the repair is about strength, not cosmetics but even still sometimes you can achieve incredible results. Good video

Earlier this year about two weeks after I had purchased a new car I took a trip to Houston, everything went swell until I got to Houston. I wasn't sure of my exit so I was in the slow lane at about 70 mph when a stone flew across the highway from the fast lane and made a direct hit with my windshield. I saw it coming but couldn't do anything. I got it repaired but it looks like a flattened spider on the windshield :/

Just had my windshield repaired today at Safelite. They apply the cost towards a new windshield if or when it comes to a full replacement which is kind of cool. It's probably inevitable since I drive a Jeep Wrangler! Ha

That's only if the windshield continues to break from the chip/crack they repaired. If your windshield endures new damage the cost of the repair is not applied toward the replacement, furthermore safelites price for new windshields are the most expensive in the industry...

I have light scratches on my windshield directly in front of the drivers area. I like to know if there's any way of removing them. I was thinking of using rubbing compound or vim. Then using wax to buff it out. Let me or even better, having a video on this thanks Ivo

Yes I'm more interested in polishing a windshield. The years of stone nicks are like sandblasting, and the glare of oncoming traffic at night is not a pleasure. The little bit I do know is that it's rather easy to distort the glass if a gentle hand isn't used.

+MrTheHillfolk give it a good wash and claybar your glass! afterwards wipe with microfibre and isopropyl alcohol afterwards and hopefully that fixes most of your damage.

Hey Larry, Have you ever posted a video on how to remove wiper burn AKA windshield scratches? I just bought a used car and its fantastic, however the windshield even after cleaning is streaking / fogging light from the scratches on it. I've seen the two episodes where you talk about glass cleaning and you use a buffer on it with a thin microfiber cutting pad. However these cars didn't have the type of severe scratching I have on my car... And I fear that buffing would take a good minute to finish. I saw two videos out on KZfaq, one showing a man sanding / buffing / polishing an older Ferrari, and one of a rando guy buffing wax (thats right, wax) into his windshield. On a side note the rear window on my car has that annoyingly cheap tint that gets all hazy after summers heat, will need to get that removed. Would do it myself if it weren't for the rear defroster.

I've always admired the precision involved in glass chip repair. Definitely not something I'm cut out for! I'm going to have to see if I can find this guy for some advice. I have a few chips, but what really annoys me is the faint scratches the windshield wiper somehow managed to leave in the glass. I've been over them with razor blades, steel wool, sandpaper, even tried buffing them out with a microfiber cutting pad and some really heavy cutting compound to no avail. I have no idea how rubber could do that much damage when abrasives won't touch it...

Pit filler resin can NEVER "harden as strong and clear as the original glass" Overtime resin will cloud and loose it's bond from the glass and the damage will show up again. Also why is the title of this video "DIY Windshield Chip Repair" DIY stands for Do it yourself. Unless you are saying you can do it yourself after spending 8 times the cost of the windshield for this kit.

John Dozier because the resin cures with UV light it is not UV resistant. Depending on the amount of sun it gets (2 - 6 months), the pit filler continues to cure harder and harder. To the layman it looks as though its sun rotting. It will eventually fall out leaving the original pit. That does not effect the repair. All it does is effect the wiper blades.

John Dozier yes that is true that's how come there's a new technique called pressure curing where you put a UV flashlight pointed at the ship while it is under pressure and fully injected so basically have the injector still tighten down and pushing resin in there even when it can't fit anymore while it's hardening

From another professional video, drilling a hole at the end of a crack to stop it's growth should be .042 minimum to .060 inch maximum deep. Follow that with a spring punch or hammer on chisel to create a new bullseye at the hole, stopping crack growth. Bloggers say glass layer is .078 inch thick until the plastic is reached. Be careful pressing suction cups or adhesive stickers in repair kits. This can cause cracks to grow.

Not to be a buzzkill, but this is not a DIY project unless you do it for a living and are adding it to your shop. The tools are $hundreds and the resin is too expensive to use just once or twice (won't keep forever once opened). Plus, glass repair is free from your auto insurance in the entire US, and many other countries. This dude is clearly an expert, but the tools used by Safelite (Belron outside the US) are a generation ahead. There are bad cracks and bad technicians, but all in all they can do a better repair with less experience required. 20 minutes or less, and they vacuum your floorboards. Just call your insurance company, folks.

Glass repair is not free from your insurance company! In fact some don't even has glass repair as an option . With Statefarm you have to make a claim and pay your normal deductible like any other accident.

Safelite uses the Glass Medic. The design is older than the hills and twice as dusty. The system only produces a vacume with no pressure cycles. And for that privilege, you get to drag around a dopey 12V pump to put on a 'high tech' show for the customer. Ins. pays if you first pay for the policy that covers glass loss. 20% of the defects I see are previous poorly done repairs. Glass repair is a leader item for Safelite, they really wanna sell you a new windscreen.

I noticed how he said the glass from the front is different from the side windows and I actually have a small chip in my passenger side window. I wanna know if the window repair kit I can buy at the auto parts store will work on the chip? Or is it not repairable?

@@gav240z true...not the best yet it does get the job done. If he learns the technique then it truly is a no brainer. Wait for a clear sunny day and... Only Takes 10-20 mins and your done.

Question, is there a video on your channel for repairing scratches on driver side door glass? I had extremely bad luck today and the equipment used to wash my car scratched the glass all the way from the top to the bottom of the glass. This happened at a very popular well known car wash in my area. They have been open for a long time and there car washes cost $35 now, yikes! I am going to contact the general manager to try and receive some compensation for the permanent damage done to my car but I'm afraid that since it was done at a car wash it will be, at best, an "at your own risk" type of a situation. Still I'm left with a window that is scratched and I've only had the car for 3 weeks! I'm pretty upset, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

As you can see from the pic it seems something had been dragged across the glass covering about 6 to 7 inches from top to bottom with the major scratches on the top half of the on window. There are bubbles from the window tinting from the previous owner. These are not the scratches I'm talking about.
