This is my method for making Resin Cast Wood Rings. This is a step by step DIY. This process can be used to make pendants as well, or anything for that matter! Now I do have a few specilty tools for this project, but the instead of a press to break the wood you could use a vise, and before I had the sanding station I used the Dremel and plain sandpaper flat on a table, be resourceful. We used to have one of these rings from the brand Secret Wood and it was lost, so after a stroll through ETSY I decided I could recreate it and this is the result of DIY!

The ring you showed in the video thumbnail was different than the ones you made in the video. I was really hoping to see you making the one that was in the video thumbnail. Even though they are similar, there are differences. So I was disappointed this video didn't show how you did the one in the thumbnail. You should make sure your video thumbnail is showing what you are actually making in the video... other than that, it was a good video...

When spraying the clear coat try putting them on a bent wire in a drill on low speed then spray.

That's genius! Unfortunately I quit making these rings, and that's why I made the video, when people ask me for one I send them a link to this. They are really cool, but super time consuming.

I appreciated the level of verbal detail in this video. Listening to others explain/justify their decisions can be enlightening. Does the clear lacquer age well?
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It does age well. I have only had one fail on me and I think personally that it was actually the resin that failed.

Wondering if the portion cut off when narrowing the block for a ring was made into a pendant? heck 2 items out of one block...
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 4 жыл бұрын
Out of one block I used to do, 1 ring, 1 pendant and 2 earrings.

Kinda late to the party but I just wanted to say nice work! Ya did pretty good at explaining everything. Only question I have is ....is the heat pad necessary in the fish tank or could you just use a heat lamp or nothing at all? Jw
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын
"Necessary" no. It is super helpful though. Its great for helping with bubbles as they can rise to the surface better in a warm environment. It also helps to put the molds into the tank a couple hours before you pour them. With the wood nice and warm it also helps with bubbles escaping.

@@DavidWTube Can you get away with a different heat source? How expensive are those heat pads?

Very cool idea using the syringes to create swirls and Injecting depth into the resin 👍🏻 Perhaps use a blow torch or heat gun to flash out the bubbles in the mix? Although I think a certain amount of bubbles give depth and point of interest, also do you think you’d get a clearer resin if you were to put the liquid mixture in an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner? I’m just curious as to whether it would cause the bubbles to rise and explode on the surface ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын
A jewelry cleaner would probably work well! I have changed my method slightly, now I put the wood blocks after they are taped into molds into the core tank and let them get nice and warm. I then pour the resin in on the warm wood and it really helps get the clarity up. You can additionally use a heat gun on the outside of the cup before you pour the resin to get a lot of bubbles out. I can't stress enough not to blow a heat gun directly at the resin as any particulates in the are will be blown into the mix. A hair dryer is also a good tool for this job as it operates at a lower temperature then the heat gun. You can also put the molds in the oven before you pour them at 125 degrees fahrenheit.

Can paint be used to substitute the dye?
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын
I tried that on the first few as an experiment, and ultimately had issues with the resin not hardening properly. I tried acrylic and water based.

Ciao cosa usi per eliminare le bolle d'aria?
@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын

@DavidWTube
@DavidWTube 5 жыл бұрын
la temperatura ambiente va bene circa 70 ° F. Direi che 80 ° F sarebbe l'ideale per rilasciare eventuali bolle dalla resina prima di iniziare a versare. Questo è tra 21 ° C e 27 ° C
