After buying a 9 year old 2013 CRV a few months ago, I paid Jiffy Lube $150 for an oil change. I drive for a living, so of course the oil life light went on at 3000 miles ... even tho I got the synthetic oil that's supposed to last 10,000 miles. So it's big help to know how to reset the oil life alert. But I still don't want to pay $150 every few months, so your video was a big help to show me how to do it myself. Many thanks! P.S. Wow, I use synthetic as well, but still change the oil in our CRV ever 5,000 miles, just to be safe and keep the inner engine in top shape! Great idea on checking the serpentine belt while the hood is up, and topping off all fluids. Our '14 CRV only has about 80K on it, so has a lot of life in it yet. We do tow it behind our motorhome, so the car itself would naturally have many more miles, but the 'engine' miles is correct.

A Honda uses the metric system. The drain plug is more accurately 17 mm (not 11/16”).

It's best to check size. Sometimes a standard fits better.. I often use 1/2" on heads that are really supposed to be 13 mm which is slightly larger than 1/2"

In the real world, bolts can be slightly rounded by someone previously using an adjustable wrench or whatnot. A SAE 11/16th is about 17½ mm and tends to work well on an old 17mm plug. You could replace or repair the plug if someone was OCD about what socket size works.. Just saying.

My favorite DIY video ever! Getting ready to do my first oil change on a 2014 honda crv ,bought six months ago Thanks for clear video, clear and concise speech, and fast forwarding through some mundane parts of the job. At first I thought you were bleeping out some cussing, like when oil seemed to be running down your sleeve! But good character is apparent! Loved the comments, especially that you responded to many and answered questions. I didnt get an owners manual, so a good video is very helpful. By the way, I take old socks ( which have developed thin spots or holes) out to the garage for oil spills. Looks like I'll need one for a glove on this honda. Dealer oil change for $40-50 sounds good to me ,too.

Thanks for your video. I haven't changed oil in a car since I was in my 20's. I made a rookie mistake and didn't make sure the gasket on the old oil filter was off before putting the new filter on. Oh boy, what a mess! Hopefully no body else made this mistake like me.

Just a couple of things I'd add...I would wear latex gloves working on oil changes, as it keeps your hands clean, and at the end, don't check the oil until you back down off of the ramps, as the car should be level. Our CR V is a 2014, so I'll assume its very similar, and has about 70K, but I thank you for the idea of checking the belt! That I need to do, and then keep the old belt as a spare!

Good Information! Thanks for telling me that it holds 4.2 quarts and how to reset the oil life indicator. That is exactly what I needed to know! I was glad to see that you used a decent filter instead of putting on another piece of junk. You should fill the filter with fresh oil before installing it (because it sits vertical and won't drain out on install). You should also run the engine and check for leaks before replacing the service plate.

That washer on the drain plug is probably a crush washer that should be replaced each time. When tightened to the proper torque the washer seals without over tightening.

@@njsongwriter Absolutely wrong.. When the entire filter element is saturated, you will be surprised how much oil is in the filter... You need to change your oil someday... Might learn something..

Well...it's nice to see that they moved the oil filter. I tried to change the oil and filter on my moms 2006 CRV and it was impossible to access the filter. It's on the back of the engine half way up from underneath the vehicle. I used 2 ramps and had easy access to the oil pan. I didn't have a cap cup type wrench remover, just a tightening strap type. There is no room to move to tighten the strap around the filter. I even bought a filter claw type wrench with no success. I gave up and brought it into a Honda dealer and got an oil/filter change, top off fluids, inspection and free car wash for $47.

Dude, the cap that fits on the bottom of the filter is only a few bucks.. If you have a ratched and some extensions, you can take it off very easily.. Straps, etc., = the ancient way of doing this when vehicles had tons of room underneath to use them... Get into the 21st century...

Did an oil change today, everything fine except removing the old filter which was a fram was a absolute bear to get off, by hand no way, tried the tool that fits over the old on but it kept popping off, tried the big filter remover pliers but wqs crinkling the filter, so I had to borrow one of those claw things and it finally broke it loose, it can be frustrating, the filters are not very sturdy and so small. has this ever happend to you ? I replaced it with a napa filter and put it on hand tight , hopefully comes off much easier

not really sure but I probably bought them at Walmart. they are all metal if you get these make sure you sit them on a piece of plywood or OSB if you are on blacktop when it is hot out the front will sink in the blacktop. My garage is concrete

Not 11/16 for drain plug. This is a Japanese vehicle which is metric. The correct size is 17mm. 11/16 is slightly larger. Use that and risk rounding it.

What's the torque spec for the engine oil drain plug? I've seen a lot of oil plugs damaged by improper tightening. I have 29' lbs. Written down. Should use never seize on the filter cover screws

If you have a 17 mm it would be better but i have used 11/16 many times with no problem

At 1:29 do you see those silver bolts on the front of the engine at both sides of the orange dip stick? What are those bolts for? I just saw I'm missing one

I think you're talking about the bolts that hold the valve cover on the engine not sure how you would be missing one of those. I would just stop by a local garage and see if they can look at it for you.

Hey brother, I know this is an older video but just wanted to get your opinion. I have always stuck with the every 5k miles oil and filter change but I have always had pre2010 model cars. Well now I have a 2011 Accord and a 2014 CRV, both use synthetic. I get mixed opinions on sticking with every 5k or using the oil life percentage. What do you stick by? In either situation, I would still check the dipstick regularly as normal.

On our CRV I go by the oil percentage and on my Toyota Tundra I change every 4000 because I only put about 10000 miles a year on it. I do recommend checking the crv oil at least once a month. Hope this answers your question.

I also have a 2014 CRV. My last oil change was grim. As it now has over 125k on it, I'm changing every 5k no matter what.

Austin Faulkner - been changing oil and filter from 3k to around 4k now and it is worth it to help the engine parts last longer.. Synthetic oils can be purchased on Amazon even for a little over $4 a quart in 5 quart jugs..This is not cheap-o oil this is Pennzoil synthetic with the highest today SP rating... And it's delivered to your door...

I don't put but 6K miles/yr on my CRV, just once a year I let my Honda dealership do the recommended 0W20 full synthetic, car doesn't burn a drop of oil, runs just like the day I bought it,, probably will keep my 2014 for 10 years as it has been bulletproof.

Nice instructions thanks. In my car I can't even remove 4 screws to remove the under cover (shown at your video 2min 12sec). I don't want to strip the screw head, is there any tip? Appreciated.

Excellent video! I have the same vehicle, and I always feel conflicted about changing the oil myself because it seems to be a minimal cost savings. What are you thoughts on that? My dealership will change the oil/filter/car wash for $40 (with a coupon). I find that buying 5 quarts of oil is around $34, plus new filer gets me close to $40! Everything else they do (like switching an air filter) can be ridiculous in price.

I'm at 96,000miles, and plan on referencing them again in the spring to change both. Also planning on tackling the serpentine belt and alternator replacement around 105,000. Thanks again! I pay $20 for oil and filter. 5 quarts of Super Tech 0W-20 is $15. That leaves another $5 for the filter and crush washer.

I would always want to do it myself if possible, you cannot trust the idiots that do it these days.. Hard to find good people lately... If you do it yourself, you can look around under there and spot things that might need attention too... Where do you shop for oil ??? I can get 5 quarts of Pennzoil Synthetic SP rated oil delivered to my door on Amazon for $22.93..

My crv used to burn some oil in between changes also never really new why. Sorry I can not help. I just got used to checking it every few weeks.

Hi, it shows your filter model is Mobil 1 M1-110A. But Walmart told me this is not compatible with 2014 HONDA CRV. Why? Thanks!
