Modern DJ kit offers performance and functions which could only be dreamt of back in the day. But there are some features on older gear which have disappeared in recent years, a few of which we think deserve to be revived. On the new episode of "Beatsource Tech", Mojaxx talks about the things we miss about vintage DJ mixers.

I remember clubbing in the early 80s, the sound was terrific old Rane mix boards and Technics record decks produced a beautiful analog sound that you just don't hear anymore, that's said, I do enjoy the new DJ controllers budget price than mid priced that'll allow anyone to experience DJing. And I'm tired of people complaining about the sync button, it is very important for people who are disabled it helps us experience and create just like everyone else. Thank you for the wonderful videos

The Pioneer DJM-900NXS has over 550 pF capacity in the phono input (without a coil, which used to be common in Germany as radio frequency protection) and then there are the 100 pF from the Technics SL-1210 RCA cable. At my time (1989), only 400pF (total) was "allowed" as radio signal protection with the Concorde PRO.

I can't remember how many phono/line switches I broke transforming on several Numark mixers. I finally gave up that style of DJing and just started perfecting beat matching. Bought my Urei 1620 in the early 90s and instantly noticed the increased quality of the sound. Clarity and increased bass. As much I love mixing classic dance music on rotary mixers , I also still love old RnB ,soul and rare Jazz and breakbeats where having a crossfader (or battle style mixer) would be very useful. Most companies don't make mixers suitable for all styles, so u kinda gotta pick one or the other, or buy one of each if you can afford it.

Yeah, it kind of sucks. Not many choices with high quality sound. You night try looking at the Mastersounds mixers. They are rotary and include an assignable crossfader.

Bought my Urei 1603 about 5 months ago from some lady that had no idea what she was selling, for 200$. Initially I was thinking of reselling it and buying an Allen Heath and keeping the extra cash, but after plugging it and using it I can't even think of living without it. Even the top modern all analog mixers don't compare to it.

Having started mixing back in '96, I agree with all of this!! Haha, I even had that Numark 2002X mixer at one point. Totally agree with the illuminated pots/buttons......I also had the Korg Zero4 back in the day. What I loved most about back in the day was every club had Techs as a staple, but you never knew what mixer you were gonna' get. That was fun.

I love old weird mixers and have lots of thoughts here! Here’s what I miss: -Pan knobs on each channel. It’s a fun effect, plus I learned to beat match this way (turn one channel to R and the other to L so it’s easier to hear). -EQs that use faders rather than knobs. They’re just a fun change of pace. Some of the really old Numark DM and PPD mixers had these on the master output, and I think there’s a couple of funky Vestax as well that use them on each channel. -VU meters AND LEDs to show volume output. It’s fun to have both. -I have a couple of old Numark mixers that have a metal bar underneath that you can fold out to prop up the mixer at an angle. This should 100% be standard on every mixer geared towards house/techno/club DJs.

I hear you! I still use a Numark PPD DM 1950! It has pan controls on the master and booth. It also has a hybrid 4 band graphic / parametric eq on the master out... with old school sliders! I am getting a 3 band ISO, but it's nice to be able to shape the sound on the master and just leave it alone. I plan on upgrading to an A&H PX5, but I will miss these two features from my old 1990 Mixer :)

I and others share your appreciation for kill switches. At least personally, I am baffled by how few contemporary mixers still offer panning e.g. L/R panning, or if you want to get really wild: the quadrophonic panning of the Vestax PMC-07 Pro ISP. Albeit the latter was probably utilized all too rarely given how few quadrophonic setups are out there, even ones which have booked Suzanne Ciani based upon an interview I listened to from her. To me, that seems as if it is a shameful oversight given that we live in a day and age of Dolby Atmos and well beyond 7.2 surround sound systems being economical in the home theater market, you would imagine that quadrophonic or more dynamic spatial sound stages in professional environments would be more commonplace without having to go someplace special such as Audium in San Francisco or the collaboration that Recombinant Media Labs is doing with Gray Area Foundation for the Arts. As for coloring and finishes, has anything really topped the shiny metallic blue of something such as the Vestax PCV-175? I suppose with 12inchskinz and simulacrum, aftermarket gee whiz looks can be achieved more easily and with the added benefit of potentially protecting the original equipment underneath (all too often prone to being worn down from use)? Personally, I care more about how audio equipment sounds than how it looks.
@alanmodimages
@alanmodimages 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree at least on panning / balance controls on the master and booth outputs. Not every room is symmetrical and being able to control the stereo image of the room I think is just a critical control that the DJ should have. Maybe companies think now that this is "Front of House" stuff, but if you are working by yourself, I think a balance control is needed!

Kill switches should definitely make a come back and would love to see it on some analogue mixers. But om Pioneer RMX you can set the dB drop parameters to your liking, so it would be cool to have this feature on your kill switches. I also love (and regrettably don't own anymore) the Pioneer EFX-1000 unit which let you choose which EQ you wanted to use the effects on. This was an killer feature but disappeared and only came back on their latest high end mixer - I think. So for an FX unit released in 2004 it seems daft that this function is extremely rare on anything else.

When I was working as a club tech back in the noughties we had Cloud CXM modular mixers; brilliant invention where you could swap out a whole channel if some of the more heavy-handed guest DJs had over-smashed a fader or over-tweaked an eq knob. Just a matter of popping out the broken channel and dropping in a replacement. Didn't have features like modern mixers, but boy those things were bomb proof.

No saving no sync, while the record is playing live on channel one, you sample loops on the fly from channel twos turn table and then mix one and two and drop your sample over the top via a start stop button ❤️❤️❤️

Fond memories of the Realistic 1200 mixer I started with - still a very solid contender - no frills basically at all.. but it had cross fader , up faders and a few extra channels with good (but somewhat quiet) monitoring. I remember hunting for a proper DJ mixer in my area in 1990.. and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. Walked into Radio shack for kicks and saw the 1200 right there .. maybe $80 brand new.. maybe cheaper. I broke that 1200 out many times when my existing 'new' mixer failed. Some ex girlfriend borrowed it 20 years ago.. I wish I had it for emotional reasons now. I did some paid gigs with it as well and had no problems .

It may not have a dozen special features on it but it is bullet proof and versatile. My favorite feature on it was the dual output zones, the top mount 1/4" headphone jack, multiple XLR mic inputs, XLR and RCA line outs, 4 channel assignable crossfader and the two pin XLR gooseneck lamp. Whenever I do a gig I still line my digital components into the Peavey.

Illuminated upfaders, please! I sometimes lose track of where I have them, especially if I'm working with three or four tracks simultaneously and can't quite tell by ear exactly what each track is contributing. Being able to see those clearly in a dark club would make a huge difference. (EQ would be nice too, although usually I can see those well enough thanks to the white line. The upfaders are often all black.) Also +1 on the EQ kill switches. One hand bass swap would be huge. Not sure I even realized that back when I did have a mixer with kill switches. Oh well.

I started mixing on a Realistic mixer from Radio Shack back in the mid 90's. Went through a ton of mixers, but I still use my Rane TTM 57 mixer - It has frequency kill switches. I also have a light built in on a USB gooseneck. :) Good stuff here!

Master EQ's! Older mixers really did not have channel EQ's. We had to deal with bass overlap when blending :) But we had EQ's on the Master Out (Sometimes the booth as well). This let you shape the overall sound of the room to your liking. I had a Numark PPD 1950 that let you do this. Some of the new mixers such as the Pioneer V10 and the Mastersounds technically have a program EQ, but it's really an Isolator. Bring back a real 5 or 6 band EQ!

@@thomasschafer7268 Depends on what you consider to be old. I am referring to mixers produced in the 1985 to the 1990 era.

I still miss my DJM-350 - the effects (only on master channel and no BPM changing) seem to adapt with the music and it was always perfectly synced.

The phono/line switch is kinda like what numark did with the PT01 Scratch. Yet it was replaced really fast for a fader.

I was thinking this exact thing just the other day. I’m thinking about picking up an old Numark DM1002 just for the kill switches and transform buttons…😄

Man, you brought back some memories! My favorite was the Biamp 7600 when I started in the 80s. Close second would go to Rane. I never got a chance to use (or even see, lol) a Bozak or Urei mixer. I do honestly believe that those higher end mixers from that era did sound better than 90-95% of the stuff out there today, but I know, I know. You said that’s not where you were going with this 🤭. Features that I miss would be kill switches and the rotary instead of faders in some cases…

My old mixer in late 80s early 90s was modular. If a fader or cross fader went down. Just two screws take out the old one put in the new one and away you go
