Just a quick one today to feed my curiosity. I've been contemplating this concept of a portable electric dolly coupled with the brand new DJI Pocket 3. I was wondering if this setup would work to make it look like you have a second cameraperson. Hope this helps feed your curiosity as well. Cheers!

I enjoy how transparent you are about your trial and error. This is an excellent concept. Now if only we could find a faster and lengthier simple dolly.

It’s a great idea. A bit wobbly and it hardly moves. I wonder it would do it with a bigger motorized dolly or on top of a miniature train over train tracks. Give it a shot 👍🏻👍🏻

I have one of those Neewer sliders. Works pretty good for closeups of small objects. Mine came with a remote controller which is pretty handy. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced it. The hunt goes on.

Well, same basic rule as with any slider shot applies. If you had an object in the foreground, the movement and three dimensionality would be more apparent. The huge open space doesn't help either. Also, if the subject/person tracked by the Osmo moves faster than the dolly moves, the Osmo ActiveTrack outpowers the viewers perception of the dolly movement. You can always adapt these rules to the shoot, such as moving no faster than the dolly moves, but it does require a bit of a skill and is restrictive in it's own right. However the idea is very good and definitely has it's potential. It's a good endeavour on the part of this video maker.

For one man show stand-up vlogging, there IS a valid market for a simple, low cost, bigger wheel size rig that could truck laterally or dolly in or out at walking pace in a safe way, while the Osmo steadies your talking head . It wouldn’t need suspension on reasonably smooth ground. It might need extra weight at camera height to avoid a side to side pendulum effect, which would look like a shifting background behind your steady talking head . . . that look would be bothersome.

Really nice film-making, lovely content buddy! I'd use this without face-tracking, because the movement of the gimbal removes the effect of the dolly.

Because you're far away, it reduces the effect of the minimal dolly movement. Great idea however - just need a rig that will move a lot more side to side or front to back if your subject is at a distance and you want the camera to feel like it was on a dolly

I did this concept a year ago with my Osmo Pocket and the same dolly with a remote. Its a great idea but only works on smooth surfaces as the thing just wobbles the image a lot. It's a great idea for doing product shots close up and panning shots etc, but its very limited on anything thats a rough uneven surface.

great idea but unfortunately the effect is not really noticeable since you are far away and the dolly is moving way too slow. For the amount of effort going into setting this up, I'd personally just use a selfie stick tripod combo which is much more stable and faster to set up. This idea does have potential but probably for subjects that are more close up such as product shots. Thanks for sharing!

Almost wondering if you put string or paradors. Tie it on front side and backside. From the top under the osmo. To the bottom of the dolly. Being tight. If it would hold its rigidity. And wouldn’t wobble as much. This is a cool method if you wanted cool shit for filming yourself. Or vfx work, etc. and I know they make dollys like this that move fast too.

My idea was to put the P3 on my small ratrig slider and track a product/food to keep it center frame as I slide across. Id be filming vertical for social media. Id also need to use the 2X zoom so 40mm. Im hoping the shot would stay center frame and Id get some background movement. I've not seen many people comment on the zoom quality, but as its only for stories and reels etc Im hoping it could be ok, as Im always lighting my subject in some way.

I had the same exact idea for a while, but thanks for showing me it was a waste of time. Perhaps if it was on an elevated surface like a table it'd make more sense, but there's the worry of it falling off the table. Wished there was a electric dolly that is programmable to start and stop at a certain distance/time.

@mynameisanyname 7 ай бұрын
I had the same idea few weeks ago and I found a dolly which can be "programmed" through an app: the Yelangu L5i. I was considering to buy it but I saw this video and it reveals one issue that remains: the max speed of those small dollies is too low. The povement it produces seems unnoticeable. Too bad :(

Great idea but the wheel base is too small to use the selfie stick. For that, you really need something with at least a weighted 24 inch base and skateboard sized wheels.

In theory this is a good idea but the speed of the electric dolly is too slow & those tiny wheels would hit problems on anything but a smooth surface , a well driven rc car with a pole mount would probably be just as good

Thank you for saving me the time of having to try it myself yet. It works rather well indeed. One caveat though, why doesn't the Osmo level the horizon perfectly? It's tilted which ruins the footage. As to the stability of the rig mentioned in other comments, would a heavier dolly such as the EdelkroneOne improve that issue? I know it's a lot more expensive but just wondering. Thanks for your video. Nice work. All the best.

You ask a good question, and I think our friend missed the proper tilt mode setting on the Osmo. It will preserve perfectly horizontal shots if you pick the right tilt mode.
