My review of the DJI (Osmo) Pocket 2 (Creator Combo Kit) is here! Wireless microphone, "Do-It-All" handle, wide Angle lens, new Case and tripod: are these new accesories making it worth the upgrade from the original DJI Osmo Pocket? Is this the best vlogging camera in 2020? I was super excited when the DJI Pocet 2 was announced because I had been using the DJI Osmo Pocket for the last few year and on paper the new version with the accessories of Creator Combo Kit should fix all of them! Let's see if it lives up to the expectations!
Small correction: The DJI Osmo Pocket had a panorama option for 180°. Sorry for the error.

Does it overheat often? How about when you try to record while you plug it with battery pack?
@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
I never had overheating with original one, even in hot weather and a battery pack attached to it. I can't tell for the new version because it's around 0°C right now where I live but it doesn't seem to be a problem. My biggest problem with the old one was that it would freeze in the cold because the gimbal was made of metal. It's now hard plastic so it should help keep in at a better tempature!

3:26 Wow, that's true, I haven't seen anyone else mention that. Another thing that I only saw in one video: lots of people complained about the weak magnet for the wide angle lens, but only one person mentioned that you can push it onto the lens until it clicks more securely into place. This camera has lots of little details, you have to watch 100 hours of reviews like I did :)

@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoy my content! I would bring the Pocket 2. It much faster to start shooting with it instead of having to take out a gimbal and put the phone into it. The image quality is also better than on most smartphones. If you have children, or even just other non technical people, they simply "get it" when you ask them to use it (because you only have three buttons on it).

I still use it for the convenience but it's the reason that you usually never find wireless lav microphones under 300 to 500$. The wireless mic already received 2 firmware updates. It's still compressed audio, but it does seem to be more reliable.

For the DJI Osmo Pocket, DJI released a firmware update up until the DJI Pocket 2 was released so I believe them when they say they are going to support the DJI Pocket 2 for a while. The Osmo Pocket also works with the new version of the app. I do not know for the iPhone but the Pixel always get updates over time. Google usually brings some new features to old phones if the processing power or hardware supports it.

I live in the south-western corner of BC. Yes, I too sent a feedback to DJI about the weak and practically useless lens holder. It would have been useful for storing an ND or macro lens there but now I don’t dare place any of my precious lenses there. Personally, I don’t miss that wide-angle lens much as I don’t like the barrel distortion, besides, I can always do a 3x3 pano if I want to capture a really wide shot - not video of course.

On the focus mode, if you choose single point focus, how do you adjust focus? Is there an exposure lock button/feature?
@loicba

Great questions! For the single point focus you touch the screen or can use the app on your phone to have bigger screen to select the focus point. I wish they would add manual focus but that doesn't seem to be in there plans. For the exposure, you have full manual control. You cannot "lock" it like you would on a phone but if you select the shutter speed and ISO, it's definitely locked!

Nice review. Just a few questions. Does the DIA handle support 1080p 60fps? and what about the old wireless module, does it support the 4k 60fps? Do you know of any optical zoom that can be used on the pocket 2? I guess it would need to be a fix zoom, something like a 4 or 8 x zoom. Also, do you know if the ND filters from pocket 1 can be used on the pocket 2?

I checked for the old wireless module, it works at 4k/60fps. If you need 4-8x zoom, I wouldn't buy the Pocket 2. I would look into an entry level mirrorless/DSLR. Their cropped sensor + a zoom lens will produce much better results than using the Pocket 2.

Good review! I found the iphone/android adapters fall out of the case much more easily than the wide angle lens. So I removed the one I'm not using (iphone), give the other a little push into its holder *every* time I take the camera in/out of the case, bought a spare phone adapter (android) to keep in my camera bag. But overall, am really enjoying this new little gadget. One thought...everyone reviews this for the pro or vlogger user. I think a review slanted toward the non-professional user would be useful... ie the many who would use it for video of a vacation or trip to the zoo or family activities. Maybe even select a single nd or nd/cpl filter (nd 8 or 16?) which would work adequately in most outdoor situations (ie beach, bright sun, partly cloudy, cloudy, person in shade with sunny background)... for the folks who might be willing to usr one filter but will not fuss with deciding which of several to use. I may end up trying that myself (never did a video before, though) after my filters arrive and I get to try them out. Thinking of getting this for a retired family member who spends a lot of time outdoors near water, likes video but says their small video camera is too big to bring every day so just uses an iphone (but wants something pocketable and more video centric).

Thanks! I have the adapters in a pouch because they would fall to often and I don't use them much (wireless is so convenient!) I agree the reviews are usually not geared towards beginners but I don't think it's worth buying if you don't intend to use the more "advanced" features because most cellphones can take almost as good video with decent sound. I highly suggest you check out one of my other videos about framerates: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/md12ns6mv5-tfWg.html. It's a misconception that just putting a ND is going to make your footage better 😥

@@loicba So true...but my goal is to get this person started in a non-intimidating way, then as they use it more perhaps they will grow into the camera. I have noticed our families tend to start gingerly with new technology, then after awhile start exploring it to ultimately become quite adept. So we now give them things they can use on a simple level but can also grow into. It's real important not to overload them in the beginning or they will simply decide it's too complex. We often jump fully into new things with both feet..our families, not so much. But whether you reach your goal directly or with an end run, the goal is still reached.

Awesome Video! Very informative! You are quite Talented! I'm interested in getting the Creator Combo kit. Do You think the audio is good enough for Vlogging (Travel and other) without the wireless transmitter, or would it be a good idea to Always use the wireless transmitter? Would there still be great audio without adding another mic (just using what was included in the kit)? What format do the videos get saved in (MOV, MP4, AVCHD)? I really liked the cinematic shots! Such a Cool Dog! I will be shooting in full HD, but would still like to experiment with the other formats. Do the Full HD resolutions (as well as others) shoot in progressive mode only, or are some interlaced as well? I cannot find a clear answer online. My preferred camera is a Canon Vixia Mini X (I have a Sony Handycam as well, but that is not good for vlogging) on which I shoot in 1920x1080 60i AVCHD (it seems 60i is the best option, since the other frame rates save video as MP4). For this particular camera or others, would the highest rate available in AVCHD always be best (even if that means 60i)? On this camera, when would You recommend using 24p, 30p, 60p (or 60i)? I would prefer all progressive, since interlaced video is not the best, and it needs to be de-interlaced. Should anything Cinematic always be shot in 24p, slow motion in 180p, 30p/60p for vlogs? Which is best for interviews? For Travel vlogging, cinematic shots would be Awesome, but I don't think the whole vlog would need to be in 24p (I would probably shoot in 30p or 60p), and export all clips to the Timeline of 30p or 60p (and just include the 24p scenes when necessary). Sorry for the long comment. Any feedback would be really appreciated! Thank You so much! All the Best! Hope You and Your Family are Safe and Well! Take Care.

Yes, if you are not in a noisy environment the onboard microphones are pretty good! It’s also interesting for travel because it can capture audio from all around. The files are saved in .mp4 but I think you can also save them in .mov. You also have the choice between H.264 or H.265. I am pretty sure it’s progressive, interlaced is very rare these days (at least from my understanding). We can always leave it at 24fps or 240 for slow motion but don’t think too much about frame-rate if you don’t have ND filters. I have a video about that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e79knrJ3rbbNnKM.html. Composition/camera movements/story is much more important than the framerate or video type.

@@loicba Thanks for the reply! I would have to test the audio, but it may be better to use the wireless transmitter. The internal audio on the Canon Xixia Mini X is really Good. I will be exporting in .Mp4 (using H.264) for KZfaq, but would saving in .mp4 or .mov have better quality? Is H.265 better than H.264? For my video, they are saved through iMovie (since they are in AVCHD format, which cannot just be dragged and dropped), and when I edit them in Final Cut Express, I export them as .Mp4 (H.264) for KZfaq. .Mp4 works better when exported to KZfaq, is a smaller file, and really does not have much of a difference (if any at all) apparently when compared to .mov. I will have to take a look at the video. I don’t have experience using such filters, but they may be something worth getting in the Future. The issue also is that I found out that High Quality mode has limitations. Full HD 60p would only be usable on Battery Save mode. For next quality on Full HD, is 60p (battery save) better than 30p (high quality)? I think I would just have to test out the frame rates, but bigger files could possibly have better quality. I could use 24p for cinematic shots (or 30p/60p), but I really thought 60p would be best for travel vlogging/interviews for better quality. 24p could be nice for documentaries, but 60p/30p could be nice as well. Why would not using filters make a difference to the chosen frame rate? Do You Usually use the wide angle “lens” attachment? Thanks for the information! Take Care.
@loicba
@loicba 3 жыл бұрын
First of all I will insist on this framerate, codec and format are not very important. Most people on KZfaq watch videos in 480p or 720p and really don’t care that much about the image quality: content is the most important part. Audio is usually also underestimated. I would invest in better audio equipment. A video can have bad video but cannot have bad audio. Now with that being said, .mov or .mp4 are basically the same thing because they are “content wrappers”. Their role is to tell the system how to handle the file, not how to compress it. The compression is done with the h.254 or h.265 compression algorithms. h.265 offers better image quality and much smaller files but it’s VERY HARD to edit the footage because of the compression. Now I want to be clear, 60 fps is not useful at all if you don’t plan on slowing down the footage. The video editing program will literally just use one frame out of two. You definitely should not 60 fps for interviews. Framerate is not very important because it’s the shutter speed that determines if you image is going to look good or not. You want motion blur and the only way to have “good” motion blur is to “double your framerate”. For example, for 24fps, your shutter speed should be 1/48, for slow motion at 120fps, your shutter speed should be 1/240. I will probably make a video on this because your are not the only that has a hard time understanding the effect of framerate on the video. For the wide angle lens, watch my video, you will have the answer very soon 😉
@RoamingPunjabi
@RoamingPunjabi 3 жыл бұрын
@@loicba Thanks again for the reply! Yes, I can understand the story is the most important part. Why does 60fps get such a bad reputation? I have read pros for using both 60fps and 30fps, but mostly think 60fps would be best for Travel Vlogs. Isn’t smoother footage with more detail better? I may include some slow motion footage, depending on the situation, but isn’t using the slow motion feature better that? Even if it’s best to have all footage have the same FPS in one Timeline (I think 24fps will not be the best for Travel Vlogs), would it be best to use the slow motion feature and add it to the 30fps or 60fps Timeline? Also, why is motion blur so important for blogs? I can understand it could have a nice look, but blur is not Always Nice. As for interviews, they could be more formal/chat show style, or informal/Outside talking to someone (like a Farmer selling Fresh Fruit). In that case, I would want to have the best footage possible. In Your opinion, why is 6pfps bad for interviews. Since 60fps would make footage look very smooth, with more detail, and more Life-Like, I personally think that could look nice if the viewer feels the scene is happening right in front of Them. Looking Real could be more of an immersive experience. If I shoot in 60fps instead of 30fps, why would the vlogs not look too good? If I don’t use the filters, is it just not worth shooting in 24p for cinematic scenes? But since shooting cinematic b-roll in 24fps, and having a-roll in 30fps or 60fps would be a bad idea, should all scenes be shot in just 24/30/60? Great, hopefully I can get more understanding from the video. Thank You. Take Care.

For the image it's not much: it's contrast, brightness and saturation (or did you mean for the video editing?) Actually, the real cinematic framerate is 23.976 fps, not 24 fps. To simplify things, companies use 24 fps exactly now. I am not sure if it's the Pocket 2 or FilmicPro that uses which but it's not an error from any. What editing software do you use because most can manage that difference (and it's why no reviewers mention it)?

Very informative review... 'warts and all' :D I don't have anything to use to record decent video (my phone is old and poor) so I did consider the old Osmo Pocket (instead of a GoPro) because the gimbal allows for cool video techniques so it's nice to see your video comparing the old and the new, "2". I think it's a shame the gimbal control stick and tracking mode are worse on the new model but maybe there will be firmware fixes and new accessories. I've actually ordered a Pixel 4a 5G, not because I want 5G (don't have it where I live) but because of the slightly bigger screen and battery, slightly better processor, wide angle sensor and video options; I think it will be enough for an amateur like me though I will probably need to get a microphone... and maybe next year an Osmo Pocket 2 if those issues are improved :) Keep up the great work :)

DJI has a very good record of fixing stuff with firmware update. For the first version, it wouldn't focus when we had snow around and I contacted the support team to let them. They asked for the original footage and a few days later an engineer wrote to me letting me know they looked into it and it would be fixed with the next firmware update. I had to wait a few more weeks but when it came out it was completely fixed 🙂 I am planning a video to compare in more detail my Pocket 2 vs the Pixel 4a because the image quality isn't the only reason why I use the DJI Pocket cameras instead of my phone.
