You missed the fact Sony has been building professional video cameras for decades. Also the Japanese educational system tends to discourage the independent thought and action necessary to make innovative programmers so programming is very task oriented and thus user interfaces are not good but machine control programs such as exist in cameras are excellent.

Things are definitely heating up! I shot a white Porsche at a racetrack two days ago in the bright midday Spring sunshine, and the DJI Pocket 3 stunned with its dynamic range, metering, and skin tones (on the talking head content). I shot my R6 MKII alongside the DJI, and it did no better than the Pocket 3. It's truly an incredible device. You both raised some great points about the evolution of camera design, and the likely role DJI will have in shaping it. It looks like DJI has become the Apple of 2007.

I'd be keen to watch some comparison shots of the porsche and the talking head of pocket 3 and your r6 mkii. Previous pockets and small dji cameras have had the problbem where the image gets processed heavily like smartphone images, so lots of digital sharpenning and super strong noise reduction which makes the image look cheap and plasticky, is that not the case on this new pocket?

Its funny how us older photographers 40+ always seem to think of Sony as a "New to the game" type camera maker as many of us remember when they came out with a DSLR in the mid-00's and all of us on POTN, Fred Miranda and DPReview rolled our eyes at it thinking "This'll never catch on" and how wrong we were. Because we forgot that Sony has been making "digital" cameras sort of, since the 1980's. Yes they recorded to tape, but they had viewfinders that worked similar to mirrorless. Then in the 1990's they were making disk cameras and other stuff. Point is, we MAY UNDERESTIMATE DJI right now, but lets look back in 15 years or so.

Since Sony is merely the answer to the question "what happened to Minolta?" I see Sony as having a long history in cameras. Besides, under the Sony brand they were early innovators in electronic imaging, and the Mavica camera range was available from 1981, and while not a big hit, I remember after Tiananmen Square, those with film cameras were having their film exposed to light by Chinese officials at the border, while one press guy had a Mavica, and could get his photos through because the border guards did not know about electronic images going back to 1981. I am also an older guy, started my photography in 1962, and I owned 4 Minolta Autocord TLR from the 60's (2 wore out, but still have 2), still have my Minolta 110 Zoom SLR, remember the Minolta Maxxum 7000 as the first AF SLR (but never bought one,) and I remember news about Sony's Mavica cameras as stepping stones to digital cameras. So for me, Sony is not such a newcomer to camera manufacturing, and has a long history in electronic imaging.

@@Whatsgoodmydude2222 I think it is not China intentionally abandoning Apple. Apple is just not as competitive as back in the days of iPhone 4 to iPhone 6. Many Chinese brands have already beaten them in specs and performance in some fields and even at lower prices. Personally I and a few other family members have switched out of Apple for Huawei and the only downgrade is getting ads in system apps and missing the library App Store offers(but I could just install apks). Overall experience is smoother and the camera is better. I heard MI and Oppo are making even better smartphone cameras

The impact of US sanctions have been diminishing as China's economy continues to grow to the point that companies like DJI do not need to rely on the US to grow their business. In fact, it hurts foreign brands in China even more when people end up supporting local brands instead. Ultimately, it's us the consumers in the US that get impacted the most with no easy access to the latest innovations.

@@RuffRhyno Yes the US is still the largest economy no doubt. But sanctions won't work as well as they did with China's economy edging closer and closer to the US. It used to spell death for companies if they lose the US and Europe markets. However, that's not the case anymore. They may not grow as fast but they'll still be competitive under sanctions. Take a look at Huawei and their latest products, and one has to start wondering when those technologies will be seen in any of the US products, if ever.

@@hyeung1 Yes. If you look at the big sanctions that the US and EU together put on Russia which only has a 10th of the population of China, and after some initial impact in the beginning seem not to have so in the long run, you can imagine how little impact any sanctions on China will have. The US is a strong 350M market, but it's not as strong as the remaining 7B (growing) markets combined that don't join in with the sanctions.

It's not true that Kodak failed to take their digital cameras to market. 1) 1991 Kodak DCS was a 1.3 MP DSLR built on the Nikon F3 2) 1992 Kodak DCS 200 was a DSLR built on the Nikon F801 3) 1994 Kodak DSC 420 was a 1.5 MP DSLR 4) 1994 Kodak 460 was a 6MP DSLR 5) 1998 Kodak DCS 560 based on the Canon EOS 1N : : Their final generation was the DSC Pro 14N in 2002, with a 14 MP sensor. The details matter if you want to learn the correct lessons. They knew film had been made obsolete by their own innovation. What killed Kodak was their failure to predict the end of photo prints, which they mistakenly assumed would still be needed even with digital cameras. The failure to anticipate the display of photos on computer and phone screens was fatal in the end. Seriously, it was only 20y ago!!

They do not help me taking better photos, but they do lead me into thinking about about photography, where it's from, and where it's going, expecially how it interwine and contridict with technology. It is scary to think about how far DJI has gone in such short time. I never thought DJI would be into professional imaging, until they started working with Hasselblad in 2015. I have invested into Nikon eco system pretty deep, D5100, D850, and Zf recently, several F mount lenses, and 1 Z mount lens so far. I have the Osmo 5, which is a really nice gimbal, but it doesn't have a mic attachment. I have their wireless mics, which are great, I love them. I was going to buy an Insta 360 phone gimbal because it has a cold shoe for a mic receiver, but now I'm thinking I'm going with this new DJI unit. I'm out in the field/wild a lot for what I do, so size, weight, and ease of use are critically important to me. I also have a Mavic Air 2S that is fantastic. When you buy a Sony you can be sure that nothing more of what is written in the product launch leaflet will be added in future. Great video guys. The Hasselblad accusation . The really interesting thing to me from the outside. Is DJI appear to of given Hasselblad the room to be Hasselblad with the design and the ergonomics of the X series cameras. DJI seem to of provided the electronics and technology for the interface. Let’s face it Hasselblad had a JV with Fuji to develop the H series cameras with Fuji making all the optic’s for those cameras. From memory the h series cameras had a horrible user interface on the back and cameras, the X series just is light years ahead of the H series, It seems the mixture of the 2 companies seem to produce some of the best interfaces on the market at the moment. I’ve recently invested back into Fuji GFX series, the reason I went to the GFX 100ii over the X2D 100c. The GFX 100ii has better autofocus, view finder and lens line up also the battery grip for longer lenses is an advantage for me. The Hasselblad’s design and leaf shutter near sent me there way. I totally agree about the OSMO pocket 3, I’ve just been trying to adapting a Sony A7S3 to a blogging kit, with a 20mm 1.8 lens and cage the Vlog grip / tripod a wireless mic etc. i now feel silly I can get 90%+ on the capability for about 10-15% of the price. Plus I can carry it all day with my Leica M11 on lengthy walks. Anyone what a A7S3 ???

For our use case, the Nikon 30 Is far preferable. Primarily in the case of framing. The larger screen is just easier to frame yourself from a distance. Also, the quality of video is better. I vlog on a Z30 with a DJI RS3 mini gimbal.

Very interesting analysis. When I saw the footage coming out of this camera I was very surprised but more than that, I got really excited. DJI has been gradually showing us that they understand imaging very well but they understand their customers and the market even better. The only company that does that as well is Blackmagic and they are too focused on high end production films but they also started showing glimpses and a desire to experiment with more mainstream stuff (vertical video on their pocket cameras), which is an interesting coincidence (DJI Pocket and Blackmagic Pocket) and let's be honest, professionals do photo and video for fun as well and these cameras bring a lot of joy and tho traditional setups are ok, they take us out of the moment and a lot of times kinda ruin it. Changing lenses, attaching gimbals, tripods, microphones, changing batteries, even filters, takes too much time.

I started using the pocket 1 to shoot news stories in a major market years ago and just ordered the pocket 3- it is my 99% go to- a DJI drone and an insta360x3 round out my tool kit. DJI really should recognize its potential in the news gathering space. I also use the pocket for family vacation videos etc on my channel.

FYI, that doesn't look like the Pocket1 but rather the Osmo 4k @ 3:32. The Pocket1 is nearly the same form factor as the Pocket3, with no rotating screen and no built-in wifi or mic transmitter/receiver. It atlcrually worked decent for when it was released I think 4 or 5 years ago.

Yes, I've got an Osmo pocket 1 and it is great, still use it, the software was initially a bit suss, but they worked that out, and people are still amazed when I show them what I made the video they watched with. Camera snobs just don't seem to get it, most people just want good quality video, and the Pocket 1 4K is more than good enough for what most people want, they don't care about the 'cinematic look' or perfect skin tones etc. The Pocket 3, with all the improvements, is going to be a killer.

@@SaintKimbo I am seriously considering of replacing my Pocket with the 3. I just recently replaced my Action1 with the Action4, and my OM2 with the OM6. 2 of my main gripes with the Pocket1 is its required module attachment for wifi connectivity to my phone so I can have remote access and better shot preview. And gripe #2 is that the only other way to connect my phone to the Pocket is via the detachable USB module over where the control wheel goes, but the USB piece does not take into consideration the case on my phone. In fact, almost all of DJI's products don't account for a cellphone case where a physical attachment is needed. My old OM2 was like that, and my old Spark drone controller. I know the new larger standard remote that came out with the Mini3 fixes that issue.

@@HeadlessChickenTO I mainly use my Pocket 1 to film my Wifes amatuer dance group performing at local festivals, it's usually crowded, and I just use an extension pole with a male to male USB 'C' cable, I never bothered with the wi fi module, thought it was a bit pricey. Yes the detachable USB module is a pain, I have to remove my cover to get a good connection. I'll definitely consider upgrading, as the promise of even better 4K is very tempting.

I've seen the reviews on the Pocket 3 and it looks really good. What you guys seem to have missed is that the Pocket 2 is also great. I've used one for a long time as my main vlogging camera. It doesn't have the 1" sensor but it does have a great gimball, a built in wireless system (if you get the creator kit), and it does 4k 24FPS which is all I need. It also appears to be much smaller than the new version 3. I worry that version three will be harder to fit in the pocket of my jeans after I finish a shot. Don't take my word for it, many photography KZfaqrs use the Pocket 2 all the time including Adam Gibbs and Gavin Hardcastle. I'm sure I'll upgrade to the Pocket 3 (or maybe Pocket 4!) at some point but I think I'm going to wait until my Pocket 2 wears out. I am pleased that you are impressed with the Pocket 3.

I do motovlogging (motorcycle vlogging), which means I have an action cam on my helmet and a "b" cam for talking head stuff, and a drone for establishing/nature shots. If GoPro doesn't upgrade their 1/1.9" sensor in their next camera, it's really going to hold them back. The Osmo3 and even the Insta360 cams have 1" sensors now. I recently bought a GoPro 12, but only because the video quality was marginally better than the DJI Action4, otherwise the DJI has better low light, longer battery, and better quality of life features. If GoPro doesn't get their act together for the 13 I *will* wind up with an Action4 and a Pocket3 for a b-cam. I already have a DJI drone and an Insta360 X3 and it's hard enough to match 3 different camera company's footage together, I could just go down to 2. Or maybe DJI will do a 360 camera next? AFAIK the Pocket3 can't do 360 degree pictures, which I don't really get, but maybe they are planning a 360 camera next, they certainly could it seems. Interesting times indeed.

DJI: Good idea, marked🤣 But to be honest, Aputure is doing fine, They are pretty innovative with all their app controls and connecting to smart homes. However they are too premium for some so there is room for slightly worse but useable products at half their price. DJI doesn't seem to have an advantage over either unless they introduce some game changing tech

Lotta truth and insight here, thanks for the vid and love this style content from you guys. Makes sense on DJIs part to innovate at the bottom and the top of the camera industry initially. Ronin 4D out of reach for a lot of folks, and the pocket 3 being easily accessible to all creators. Take the dividends & data from these two products to create a product that will continue to annihilate the industry - a M43 or full-frame AIO sensor/gimbal system that just does things no one else is offering. My guess is we’ll see something like this in the next 18-24 months from them. 🤞🤞

I also took a couple of “real” cameras. A Leica M11, a Fujifilm GFX100 II and my trusty Ricoh GRIII… guess which one I’m shooting the most. That’s right the Pocket 3. After reviewing the footage I considered it’s good enough… it’s not a toy. Nuff said.

I barely have any usable footage because it was so shaky. Now Sony is great for my taking head videos. So I’ll probably end up using both because for me, they do different things.

In the field, sometimes there isn't time to fidget with lots of components and cables and that's where the Pocket 2 really shone for me as I could take it out of my actual pocket while riding a bike, shoot some footage and put it back. I actually purchased a DJI gimbal but it just limits me artistically and takes FOREVER to set up. So, I'm definitely going to get a Pocket 3, and never look back and still use my A7sIII for more stationary shots, but never with a gimbal because it looks me into one setup and one lens plus super heavy and limits my ability to connect to my subjects. In a way the Pocket is the best when I do interviews, because while holding it, my subjects can still see my face, I'm not looking down at an LCD screen or into an EVF. The quality was not comparable of course with the Pocket 2 to a good mirrorless camera, hoping to test the Pocket 3 soon.

The differentiation with the Pocket is clearly the gimbal vs. the Sony ZV-1 and GoPro and really anything else, UNTIL you mount them on a gimbal. Note: you can’t put an ND filter on a ZV-1 and hardly anyone uses ND’s on an iPhone or GoPro. Only the more recent generation GoPros and Smartphones have acceptable stabilization for outward facing shots, but you still need to mount them on a gimbal for moving shots, otherwise… jello. I use the heck out of my Pocket2. The image quality is decent, but not great. I did an intensive test off-roading between the Pocket2 and a GoPro 10 on a Hohem gimbal mounted w/ pro suction mounts . The Pocket2 had a fair amount of jello effect, but the GoPro 10 on the Hohem gimbal was remarkably steady, considering it was bouncing all over the place. I still love the Pocket2 in my travel kit which typically includes a Mavic 3, Sony Mirrorless and 2 lenses and associated batteries. That’s all that fits in my large backpack.

The DJI log format is weird.. it's not like CLog or SLog... it's more like Panasonic's Cine-D. Just slightly washed out instead of true log. Also, the much touted DLlog isn't even available in 4K60 which is ridiculous. I'm also annoyed that they'd release the camera without ND filters being available for purchase. Anyone who tries to create some 24/25/30 FPS footage in bright sunlight is going to be massively disappointed because the very short shutter times will make any signficant movement into a staccato mess due to the total absence of any motion blur. Finally -- what's with all the "activation" BS? I have cameras from a wide range of traditional vendors (Sony, Panasonic, etc) and neither the consumer-grade nor the high-end prosumer stuff requires me to "activate" the camera. All I had to do was throw in an SD card and turn them on. Unfortunately, when you buy a DJI product, you don't actually *own* it until you expressely agree to their terms and conditions by way of "activation". BTW: make sure you read those T&C -- don't just hit "agree". DJI do make some great stuff but as a corporation, their policies suck! And yes, I have purchased the Osmo 3 Pocket and I have to say, I'm nowhere near as impressed as all the reviewers who have affiliate links in their description. IMHO it's not a good value proposition compared to other offerings on the market unless you absolutely need the compact size and the tracking feature.
