Well, in order to get a starting point in your situation, you will have to clear out grout between some tiles. Any tile will do. That should give you enough room to start. To remove the grout, I would use a smaller chisel that can fit between them. Otherwise, you will have to break one of the tiles with a hammer and start from there. Good luck on using the existing mortar bed. Make sure you clean it good when you get ready to re-tile.

Yes, as in my video I removed the tiles from concrete slab. Just start at a doorway where the flooring is different (ie carpet). If you do not have a doorway or space that is not against a wall, then you can break the grout along one of the tiles to allow you to get started.

That looks great. I have 1 inch ceramic tiles on concrete on a 40 year old floor. I took off one tile with a crow bar and hammer and it took some doing - these tiles are EXTREMELY well set... I'd appreciate any suggestions... Would renting a power tool to remove the tiles be easier/faster?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 жыл бұрын
DaminalTheAminal Well it might depend on the backing of the 1" tiles...like if they came in a sheet with that net backing to hold them together and you can buy them in sheets. Crow bar might be what you have to use. Sorry I'm late answering you, somehow your message was missed.

Exellent Video! I will be doing the tile in my kitchen this way pretty soon. I really don't like the marble in the kitchen right now, so I am replacing it with carpet. The marble is pretty thick about 1" so I think I'll have my work cut out for me, but that carpet sure will look great in the kitchen!
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 жыл бұрын
TheCmoney84 Thank you but...you're putting carpet in the kitchen? Not a good idea. Food and bacteria will grow rampant. I would not advise carpet in any kitchen. Just my thoughts on that subject. :)

Be Your Own Handyman @ Home Thanks for the advice. This is the type of carpet I want to put in. www.homedepot.com/p/Beaulieu-Dayside-Color-Ebony-6-ft-Carpet-6670-890-600-MB/100656078 I think the black will look really good against my duck egg blue cabinets. I really didn't like the old color. The contractor said they were solid mahogany. I really wasn't a fan of the color or grain. But I think the new color will look really good. I just have to figure out what to do with the ceilings now. I really want to spray popcorn texture but my good friend is suggesting that I go with acoustic tile boards 12 x12. Decisions, decisions.

Be Your Own Handyman @ Home You know what they say, you only live once. I am sparing no expense on this house. Hopefully this flip will finally pay off and I will make money of off it. It it disappointing when you put all that money into a house to flip and you have to take a loss on the sale. So I am 0 for 5 but I have a good feeling about my current one.
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 9 жыл бұрын
TheCmoney84 Can't you carpet over the marble? Or skip the carpet? Taking the marble flooring out will devalue the home. Then the buyer can decide...carpet or marble. Not many people will want carpet in their kitchen. When you sell a home it should have neutral colors and not abnormal amenities. I've sold quite a few homes over the years and studied how to make it desirable to the potential buyers. Also, popcorn ceilings are outdated and no longer desirable. Just trying to help :) Acoustic tile boards that are used in business buildings? Years ago I bought and read a book on how to sell a house (and get more bang for your buck) and it was loaded with helpful information. Just a thought....

David. Thanks for your video. I'm about to demo my entire first floor, part of which is tile. Not quite clear on where or how to start. Do I start in the middle? Buying a new house and have to demo the floor as soon as we move in. The local code here in Reno does not allow the construction crew to just lay the tile down, so therefore they will glue it and I will demolish it as soon as we move in. how do you start? do you try to crack one tile in the middle and then have space to chisel?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 8 жыл бұрын
If there is a meeting point of tile and carpet, or tile and other...start at the meeting point. If there is not a side by side meeting point then go ahead and start anywhere you want and yes, just pick one and crack it with a hammer but make sure to use protection for eyes, ears (optional), mouth/nose, hands (leather gloves) and knees. Good luck!

Thanks, I started with you method but quickly realized that hitting it with such a light hammer was going to take me forever. I got a small sledge hammer which made the process much quicker. The only problem is you can't sit next to the tile and swing such a heavy hammer. You have to hover over it. I ended up just sitting in an old office chair and rolling it back as I pounded through the tile. Got my kitchen and dining room and a hallway done in an afternoon. Glad I didn't hire someone. It wasn't really that hard.

those tiles look pretty thin compared to what we have to get up. and there is underfloor heating too, so I guess we would need to disconnect that before we start. I think you should wear something to protect your hearing as its very loud?
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome

Hi Jan, yes thicker tile takes a little more strength than what I'm showing in my video. The sound was not that loud for me removing the tiles (the video recording makes it sound louder than it is) but on my other video on how to remove the mastic or thinset, it was very loud using the electric scraper. And yes, wear hearing protection! And it never hurts to wear protective gear with any project.

If you mean where to start taking off the tile...start at the edge where it meets another flooring ie carpet (as I stated in the video). If you can't, you will have to clear out grout between some tiles. Any tile will do. That should give you enough room to start. To remove the grout, I would use a smaller chisel that can fit between them. Otherwise, you will have to break one of the tiles with a hammer and start from there.

Hi although I did not have that problem because my tile was not flying around, it wouldn't hurt to wear ear protection especially if you're heavy handed while removing the tile. Thanks for commenting.

do you also have to remove and replace the hardibacker underneath before you lay new tile?

+Ruth Taylor if you're referring to backerboard, if it gets damaged when you remove the tile then you would usually remove what's left and replace it.

thanks. We haven't started lifting the tile yet, so don't know what to expect. But, this time we are installing tile under the kitchen cabinets, so when all old cabinets come out, we will have to install backerboard in that area anyway. Right now its just the standard plywood the builder used. about 6 years ago our pipes under the sink leaked before we could catch it in time, the bottom of the sink shelf damaged and water leaked to the plywood floor, then into our basement ceiling. If tile was under the cabinets, that would not have happened so quickly.

Eharris I did not need hearing protection to remove the tiles using my method, but I did need it when removing the mastic which is on my other video on how to remove mastic or thinset. Thanks for watching!

Do you have to take off the cement sub floor, too? I put this floor in myself years back on top of linoleum which the old owner put on with ROOFING NAILS!! Then he covered it up with carpet when they showed the house! I put down those cement underlayment things --forget what they are called. Do I have to take that underlayment off, and put new underlayment on? I'd love to know before I start!

What is your foundation type - concrete slab or pier and beam? Usually you should not have to remove a concrete underlayment if that is what you have instead of a concrete slab. It might depend on how thin it is and how smooth/lumpy it is.

Be Your Own Handyman @ Home I put that floor in 9 years ago, it was vinyl over subfloor I guess, I bought cement boards, about half inch think I guess, that were 3 x 3 feet if I recall? Anyway, its NOT poured cement, Thanks. I guess the thing is, just go for it, and see. Whatever it is, that floor bugs me cause it looks so bad, I will just deal with whatever happens. Thanks!

I have wood floor underneath the plywood. The floor tiles were cemented to the plywood. How do I pick up the plywood with tiles on top of it that attached to the wood floor?

Thanks for the tips! I have large areas of tile (kitchen, hall, laundry, bath all the same (I think ceramic, 12x12 squares) and all cabinets etc are on the tile...) and the wife wants to actually replace with hardwood. Thus i assume I will have to remove all the cement board as well. Is there a good, one way easier than another way to do this?

+Don Shoemaker Do it the same as in my video and my other video how to remove tile mastic or thinset that is under the tile. Since you have such a large area though, maybe you can find a larger electric scraper than the one I used. It would be quicker, and don't forget to cover furniture etc because it's very dusty.

I watched both but my concern is the actual backer board removal. From the looks from below (unfinished basement) theres about a million nails holding it down...
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome
@BeYourOwnHandymanHome 7 жыл бұрын
+Don Shoemaker I thought you were replacing flooring only? Backerboard usually is behind tile on walls, not floors. If that's the case, I don't know what to tell you.

Maybe im using the wrong terms? Cement board maybe? The tile is not laid on the subfloor, theres something under it. If i dont remove it the new flooring wont match up...

+Don Shoemaker oh I might have read it wrong. I would try the same technique as removing the tile and then I guess manually remove the nails. I don't know of another way to get the nails out.

I got some beefy 12x24 inch bathroom tiles I need to remove. I was going to rent a small electric jackhammer, but I'll give this a shot first.
