Hi! Thanks for visiting the channel!
In this video, i am taking a look at the brand new Trumpeter 1/200 Scharnhorst, a German Battleship / Battlecruiser - it seems to vary from source to source.
This video includes the assembly of all sections, painting and putting on the bigger elements of the superstructure. Many more steps are still missing but this might already be interesting for people who want to get this kit or want a deeper review than an inbox review.

I think it would be cool to make one of these kits with the 15 inch turrets from the Bismarck so we could see them how they were intended from the start. The 15 inch turrets were delayed by technical difficulties so the 11 inch triple turrets were installed as a stop gap measure until the 15 inch turrets were ready. The war got in the way of that though.

I'd like to build it as well! I already bought five figure sets in 1/200 to make it very crowded! Thanks, i think being able to share this hobby was the thing that is now sucking me right back, i was quite near quitting modelling shortly before i made my first video

@@funinscale2892 Danke Herr. Peter, German for me is difficult to spell ( hope I don't mess up too bad). Really looking forward to the Perry FFG build. I was wondering do you have a hobby shop in your town? If so are you familiar with a German company called Herpa Wings? I have about 110 aircraft in 1/500 scale all are airliners from different countries. Again great build and looking forward to the next build and video.

We had one toy store which also sold models but discontinued them and only sells Revell accessoires now, but i don't really like those paints... So my go-to market is an ecommerce site from Poland; They have great prices, fast and cheap shipping. I haven't even once seen a traditional hobby shop, like eg. Andy's Hobby Headquarters, because there are none near me, sadly. Ive heard of Herpa Wings, but i think they only make ready-built models, right?

This ship has blast bags. A cool talent that I suggest learning is creating them with magic sculpt. It’s fine if you cant :)

True, that would have been a cool idea. Sculpting textile structures is very hard for me, ive tried it some times when making stowage for tanks, but it always turned out like a cylinder with dents... but blast bags would be a good skill to know as most blast bags from modelling clay look better than plastic ones

For the price you are right they could have made some hull details, most model companies eliminate all external details like water intakes. It would make for much more interesting ships

Yes, i decided for this ship instead of the USS Missouri in 1/200, which were the exact same price, and i have to say, i would have preferred the missouri because of the value, but this ship is still enjoyable to build. The rodney in 1/200 has excellent plating and exterior hull details, and i've also taken a look at a hood in 1/200 which also has hull plating. sadly, the newest entry in the 1/200 scale does not.

Yes it was a fun build for now, some problems with the fit, some were my fault, some were the kit's problems, but a nice kit overall!

@@funinscale2892 Seems like everyone on YT that has built or building this model has some different fitment issues. Personally think it started with the use of the Gneisenau hull, and Trumpeter trying to make something out of their investment in the molds etc. For the price asked, I will probably end up with a Tamiya kit once able to.

@@crazylocha2515 I havent checked other videos on it, might have a look as well! I am not sure why they have cancelled Gneisenau but you can really see which sprues are several years old and which are newly tooled for Scharnhorst. For this money, i should have gone with the USS Missouri in 1/200, but i wanted to give this ship a try. Now others can avoid that mistake :)

Hi! Thanks very much! I don't think i can fit many PE parts perfectly but i spend considerable time bending, testing each part until it fits well. You can also try to put a less well fitting part on the model, wait till glue has set and then bend the rest of the part to fit, but this might be risky as it can fall off again. I don't really have any good tips to work with PE parts, i can remember how frustrated i was when i started with them, so it is probably mostly trying to get practice. And i am far from an expert on this

I always struggle getting PE to stick when I want it to and not stick when I do. Are you using anything extra to have it set so quickly?

I use a super glue of gel consistency which has rubber particles included - the rubber particles ensure that every item placed in glue immediately has a grip to the surface; i worked with liquid super glue some time and was frustrated with PE parts as well until finding the gel super glue - you have to be careful, though, because when using too much, a blob of dry glue will be visible - it happened to me some times in this build

Regarding the Hull Plating; I already build a german battleship, a second one and an Heavy cruiser in progress (all in 1/350) and I was also wondering why there is no Hull plating on them as well. But then I took a look in one of my Books about Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and from various pictures (with many close ups) you can`t make out any plating either, except for the main belt armor. In the book they said the hulls were mostly welded and the welding lines were then grinded/sanded down, to a point were you can`t see them under the paint. Maybe thats why there is little to no hull plating detail. Tho the hulls look very uninteresting in scale model forms. PS: Thanks for the great video, great work there mate!

@@funinscale2892 And was a complete waste. After the war they did tests on surviving welded hulls and the results were terrible.

@@glenchapman3899 really? took the British many hours of pounding the Bismarck and they still couldn't sink her - the Germans scuttling her instead. The armour plating was pretty effective, unfortunately, the winners write the history books and typically make up lies to make themselves look better.

@@funinscale2892 The purpose to welding was to save weight. At the time the Germans were still trying to give the illusion that they were abiding by the Naval treaty that restricted the displacement of their warships. Welding vs rivets saved a lot of weight.

Hi Shaun! I did not use a primer, i sprayed the paint directly onto the plastic. The paints in use are Tamiya acrylics, and i find them to not require a primer coat before application as they cover the plastic well and are durable and resistant to masking tape glue. But sometimes, i get some paint chips. Primer once clogged my airbrush that bad i had to throw it away, so i kept using Tamiya paints thinned with alcohol in the airbrush

Sure you will be, i am modelling since 5 years, so i have not that much experience like some people who do it for decades, so it is just determination and trying to get better - which i dont do anymore recently, because i am really glad with the models i can make with my skill sets. I only rarely try new things, which i should probably change

I use a gel consistency super glue with rubber particles, it is a product from Loctite, im not sure if this is available everywhere, but it is called loctite power flex gel, it gives an immediate grip to parts that are placed on the model, this is very helpful with PE parts

It is a gel consistency super glue with rubber particles, the product is a Loctite Power Flex Gel super glue. it is a very good glue for PE parts as they don't fall down as easy as with liquid super glue

@@robertomander6030 Sometimes it feels like work, sometimes it is a pleasure, it depends on the kits. the 1/200 kits are very expensive and there are many tiny and time consuming parts but the outcame is definitely a pleasure to look forward to. The most fun kits are quick and easy builds for me as i do not seek the challenge, just relaxing model making I am a nothern neighbour of Italy! :)

I would recommend keeping the superstructure off the hull and painting them all separately. You can, for example, start with the hull when you want to make a camouflage pattern, then place the superstructure onto the hull, mark where which paint will be, and then individually paint different sections of the ship before assembling them in total. This requires the least paint corrections afterwards and you can get a nice deck paint finish

Hey I'm thinking about starting to airbrush my models however I don't know how to mix colors and how to apply it then I preferably use aqua colors. U got any advice for me? Thx :)

Hi! I use tamiya acrylic paints and thin them with isopropyl alcohol. I started with Vallejo Model Air paints and Vallejo airbrush thinner and when i started, i clogged the airbrush many times. its very important to clean the airbrush after every use properly. For beginning, i would recommend some cheap compressor with airbrush in a set from amazon which are starting from 50 euros, and a dedicated thinner for airbrushing, like the mentioned vallejo, and trying out different thinning ratios, but i would always start with more than less thinner. A primer is also important because the acrylic paints usually dont fix to the plastic well (Tamiya, eg., does work as a primer as well)

Note: The plating details on the Nelson and Rodney kits are GROSSLY exaggerated, because they are way too deep! If you look at photos of the real ships, this becomes obvious. The plating lines on the real ships are quite subtle, with only subtle variations of depth between one plating section and another, while on the kit the "sunken" areas of plating are molded very deep indeed. And it would be one hell of a problem fixing that in the areas where there are portholes and other details....so one pretty well has to just put up with it. I'd prefer a smoother hull to dealing with that problem.

True, you are right, it is out of scale. With flat hulls, the "denting" effect is so much work on 1/200, but i like the look of the plating recesses on rodney, even if they are out of scale, but they give it a more interesting look.

@@funinscale2892 Yes, I know what you mean. It is interesting to look at, for sure. I liked it when I first saw it on opening up the model box and checking out the parts, but I was later shocked to find out how overdone it was when I saw closeup and clear photos of the actual ships.

@@funinscale2892 Ahoi Peter so soll es sein. Hab noch jeden Menge Trumpeter Schiffe zu bauen und mehr.So zum Beispiel auch die USS Nimitz in 1:350...hab aber noch nicht angefangen. Baue grade mal zu Abwechslung ein Paar Flugzeuge.Aber bald geht wieder mit dem Schiffe los.Wahrscheinlich werde ich dann die Hms Hood bauen. Grüße aus Mainz am Rhein J.AHansen⚓

@@J.A.Hansen Da hast du noch einiges vor dir! Die Nimitz in 1/350 ist auch ein riesen Modell, wäre interessant in 1/200! Trumpeter ist für Schiffe meiner Meinung nach die beste Firma da sie die diverseste Produktpalette haben und üblicherweise eher günstige Preise verlangen für das was man alles bekommt

on most german ships the superstructure carries the camoflage, um dus the scharnhorst not have that????

They were there to make one large ship look like several smaller vessels, each grey section divided by contrasting black and white would look like an individual ship on long distances

Difficult question, but the one i fell in love with first, and which sparked my fascination with warships was HMS Hood. Richelieu is probably my favourite ship ever, today. But it changes. I also had a "Warspite-Phase" :D. Whats your favourite ship?

@@zhaoliu9080 Ah, montana, i almost forgot. she would be on the 4th place. I have to admit, with the iowas and montana class, the extremely wide aft section of the ships makes them a look a little plump from above but the bull nose is extremely nice!
